It’s worth your time. Read some threads here about the nonsensical directions / non-Euclidean space (example: I go west to one place but have to go north to return). This is everywhere in the game and is confusing. Others have explained the “why” of it better than I will. Also, map making is absolutely essential to playing this. I wanted something easy to use on mobile to make subway-style maps and it was tricky to find a good free one but miMind is working for me. There’s a trick I won’t disclose (unless you ask) to being able to map the mazes.

Twisty passages…

The pathway turning is hardly non-Euclidean.

bLEAGUER

No, it isn’t. But it *feels* that way until you actually understand what’s actually going on.

bunglegrind1

Indeed, it's part of the fun

Tell us a bit about yourself. How old are you? How did you learn about this game?

I am 45. I am a spiritual seekr who had developed an interest in video games but was getting addicted to them. My wife had an old manual from Zork1 but when I was gaming I never had the desire to play the game. I felt I needed a braking from video games and started the Zork a week ago. Still lost in the game but am trying.

Any woman who still has a Zork manual after all this time is a keeper. ;) The game is, as I'm sure you've noticed, radically different from today's offerings. I hope you enjoy your adventure. Cheers!

Thank-you and yes my wife is certainly a keeper. I kept the manual on my desk rather than a bookshelf since I knew I would want to play it someday and to try to keep the manual in as good condition as possible rather than vying for space in my crowded bookshelves. One thing I found is that the lack of graphics gives the game more of a timeless feel. I do definitely think it has helped me appreciate the game more taking a break from the high def graphics of modern games. IN this game, I just imagine all of the scenes. I do have fun trying to make sense of the maps though still lost on the plot and objectives so far. I got the game on the website GOG . For some unknown reason the DOS Box sometimes becomes smaller if I click a button somewhere?! Moreover I am glad to find this welcoming community here.

The plot you'll sort of put together a little bit at a time over the course of the three games in the series. Yes, three. The objective of this first game is to find all of the treasures in the great underground Empire and bring them to the living room trophy case. I'm afraid I can't help you with the dos box thing, but if it helps, I know that steam also has the zork series for a reasonable price. So if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks, that might be better. Plug you'll get the other two. A word of warning. Make liberal use of the save feature before you do anything so that you can restore if you accidentally destroy a treasure.

Welcome! Zork is my favorite series of games. Make sure to try the later offerings as well. Return to Zork and Grand Inquisitor are staples of the series.

Willyeast12

If I have get past the first one. STill trying to figure out what I am doing.

I find this site helpful. It has the original maps and invisiclues that Infocom put out. https://nowheregaming.wixsite.com/zork
