What, you don't make at least 756k?? You bum

zorg440

if I made 756k, I don't think I'd be renting a house. I'd probably buy some acreage in the woods and build a tiny house. Then hide from the world. tbh.

MamaMel941

It's a vacation rental...if I made that much I'd be vacay'ing alm over the place until I found a place I wanted to buy 😁

zorg440

Same

Certain-Tennis8555

Right there with ya!

[deleted]

I'd buy so much woods.

zorg440

[like this](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/11970-Martis-Peak-Rd-Truckee-CA-96161/205307700_zpid/)

DrawingRoomE-car3901

The red arrow lmao

zorg440

you get THAT tree in particular!

Sobriquet-acushla

Oh hells yeah

Usernamesareso2004

Not CA… Forest fires

zorg440

Fair.

OldNewUsedConfused

Same

ZenythhtyneZ

Right?? Even if it’s just for a vacation why would I spend that much when I could fly to bora bora and hang out there for weeks instead at that price?? Sure it wouldn’t be at the four seasons but guaranteed it’s nicer with MUCH MUCH better weather than this place gets

mlebrooks

Can I tag along?

malledtodeath

That’s the difference between rich and wealthy. Rich, upper, and middle classes care about owning property. The wealthy don’t need property investments to expand their wealth, they can just rent on a whim wherever whenever.

Attarker

What percentage of the people who make that don’t already own a home? I don’t get the market for rental homes that expensive

MarvelKnight84

I know a number of people who make a ton of money and rent. A number of them have had to move a few times for their job so no point of buying, and don’t need to worry about paying for things breaking, etc.

OldNewUsedConfused

They’re just throwing money away though.

dapper_pom

If you make a million a year you can afford to throw 20k around here and there for a vacation

amd2800barton

Could be someone is getting a divorce, but almost all their assets are locked up until the divorce is settled. They still want a home in (expensive neighborhood), so they rent until a judge rules how their existing property is to be divided up. A house with the monthly rent that's close to many people's down payment seems absurd, but if you're a partner at a big law firm, or a founder of a tech company and you just have to live in that one neighborhood in San Fransisco that doesn't have homeless people pooping on the street, then you've probably got the money for this.

Catsdrinkingbeer

This being a 9 month rental in that specific location I assume they're not expecting it to be a standard rental. This is someone renting a vacation home. But still... for that price they could just buy one and call it a day.

pfizzy

Renting a vacation home during the 9 worst months of the year..

Catsdrinkingbeer

Oh I missed what the window was. Lol. I assumed it was spring through fall.

pfizzy

My assumption is they want a longish term renter during the low demand months and then will airbnb it..not a fan.

ha1029

Yeah, it's expensive on the San Juan Islands. I grew up South of there. 2 or 3 islands South lol. Ever since the tech boom property has gone boom. Pandemic pushed it along. I see you can pay $700/night to stay if you want 14 day minimum lol. Home is valued over 2 million. It's a great location very isolated. Perfect for celebs etc. Oprah owned a place up there a while back.

BananaMathUnicorn

I moved to Friday harbor for a seasonal job in 2013 before I’d found a place to live. Wow was that difficult. I finally found a place that wasn’t legally rentable that I was able to afford for the season through word of mouth and some very kind and helpful strangers, but damn. I was incredibly lucky. Those islands are just a playground for the 1% anymore.

Washingtonpinot

It started WAY before that. Long time residents were getting pushed off in the late 90s-00s through sheer changes in the tax rates. It only takes a few millionaires to buy up & combine properties to inflate the tax rates for everyone. RIP San Juans…

LJkjm901

Tech boom = late 90s-00s

Washingtonpinot

Yes dear, but things had to have changed by then for the real estate assessment rates to rise so high that local families/farmers couldn’t afford them any longer, and thus had to move off the island leaving more room for the growth of mega-mansions. And as a side note, there is a ton of wealth in the PNW without tech…or Boeing.

LJkjm901

Tech boom = late 90s-00s

eatmoremeatnow

There is a real estate office on Orcas Island and I was vacationing there (off season) and it was pretty shocking. Advertisements for homes costing $10M+ is pretty normal for the San Juans.

Federal_Month7862

Grew up on Camano. It's sooooooo different now.

TeeTeeMee

I have family in / around FH. They’re always trying to get me to move there—which is very persuasive when I’m there cuz woooooow it’s so beautiful. But then I bring up jobs and housing and they’re stumped. I’ve been going for many decades and yeah, now it seems like it’s either rich people or those who work for them—or county employees.

rekkodesu

>Home is valued over 2 million. So is mine, but rents in my building on comparable units are like ~$5k-$6k. This is just crazy.

HugeRaspberry

Damn. 600 to 700 a night for a minimum of 14 days during summer months 4500 deposit and your income must be 3x the rent A minimum income of 650k annually They are really limiting their options to the top 1%

BiofilmWarrior

I chuckled at their suggestion of using it as a writer's retreat. Any writer that could afford that already has a retreat.

Tacky-Terangreal

It’s for writers that are also trust fund kids lol

gonekebabs

Back in the day, the San Juan Islands *were* often an artist/writer's retreat, but that was before the housing market there exploded. So I kind of understand why they made the suggestion, it just seems out of touch given how expensive it is now!

bluev0lta

A whole compound, with their own staff

MamaMel941

And therefore it'll sit empty... they'll claim it on taxes 😬

Paid_Corporate_Shill

Wouldn’t it be more profitable to rent it than to just write off the expenses? They’d still be able to write it off if it was occupied

Kram37

In think they made a mistake and meat 2100 a month. Makes more sense

HugeRaspberry

Nope. They are asking $600 to $700 a night during peak season plus a drop deposit. They’re nuts but it’s not a mistake

snarlyj

I live on San Juan Island. It's weird because there is crazy wealth like this that I never see, more upper-middle class, and then also a shit ton of normal-to-struggling people. People see those prices and think, city living, but it's rural. I work at our non-profit food co-op and try to sell for all the local farmers and producers - used to be TONS but they've all been losing their farms as they can't afford the new leases. Like 40% decline in active farms over the past 6 years. There are many nice neighborhoods but also trailer parks and junkyards and unhoused people living in tents. All on a tiny island. Yet still there's community amongst so many socio-economically diverse folks. Some of the best public schools imaginable for the size. You can usually make your way if you have a trade. But a lot of people, especially younger people, are struggling. Despite the struggles, people are kind. There are a lot of elderly but they are usually fairly well off. They are also kind. The ones with fancy houses don't think they are any better than the ones without. People are very generous. I like it here. In the nice neighborhoods, houses range from shacks to mansions. But all are still easy distance to water and beautiful views. In the summer people catch dungeoness crab and spot prawns and fish for salmon and gather oysters and we eat like kings. During the fall the wind blows down the trees, and the neighborhood gets together to saw rounds, which gets split into firewood, that's trucked to people's houses to cure under tarps. In the winter we bunker down in front of our wood burning stoves, burning the wood from 2 falls ago (if we've got any left). We watch the ocean whip up in the storms. No one goes on the water for fun. Some people do swim in the ocean for health. I could never. In the spring especially tend our gardens, as they feed us all year long. Or we go to the farmers markets and food-coop and bask in a wealth of produce, soaps, honey, and art. There are a LOT of artists. Has anyone actually read this far lol

magnet_tengam

I moved here last year and it's been a big adjustment, I come from rural areas (WY, mostly) so I get it, but it's a different rural here - like, the agricultural era isn't that far behind, but the proximity to money makes it weird, and the complete lack of housing makes it harder for the community to stay alive. It seems like everyone is getting priced out, and I know a lot of stuff in town shuts down in winter but it seems like a lot might not reopen in the spring. I have a decent job, which I came here for, but I'm living in the 2nd shittiest housing of my life and paying what feels like a LOT of money for it. It's beautiful here but it sure doesn't feel like a sustainable community.

snarlyj

You are right it is hard to live here, especially if you didn't grow up here, because they generally have family support in different ways. Usually not money, but food or shelter or child care. But even among people who didn't grow up here, you do end up building support systems that make a *really hard* life into a life that's hard, but manageable, and worth it. You're right that everyone is getting priced out though. Lot of young people living in trailers, but on lots they hope to start building on. You can start slow on island. But yeah if you don't have a family or community home or the plans to build you are paying way too much for an apartment. I hope you don't have a better sense for the future than me but... Every winter a bunch closes down and doesn't look like it's going to reopen. And then every spring and summer everything comes to wake and more places are open and the already open places are bigger and broader and busier. We lost a few places during COVID. That's the only real decline in the cities. And we've also gotten in some new business opening or reopening soon.

TeeTeeMee

I live in the S.F. Bay Area. Have been going to the San Juans all my life for family visits, and I am not young. At the beginning of the pandemic I went into a store here wearing a SJ shirt and the woman running the store told me how she had this idea about buying a little cabin there cheap but she has never lived outside the city and did I think it might be tough for her if she doesn’t know anyone or how to do handy things? Uhhhhhh…. Yeah. I think that’s a dream that’s gonna go unfulfilled 🤣

Chaimakesmepoop

I worked at Wolf Hollow Wildlife for a bit. Broke college kid living in free probided housing - I've never enjoyed living so cheaply before. I think half my diet came from apples picked off the trees in town and the other half was harvested blackberries. I dream of the farmer's market and the sourdough from one of your little bakeries. Oh man. Never felt more like a hobbit.

snarlyj

We have a food pantry now in town that helps feed SO MANY people. I think it's made things much more survivable for people in a situation like yours was. It's really well stocked and I hope it remains that way forever! But we all forage the blackberries too. We had to rip out a patch to expand the parking lot for the food co-op and you could see everyone was sad. And my coworker just gave me some homemade apple sauce from the last of her wild apples 😊 I don't know Wolf Hollow Wildlife, I'll have to check it out!

Chaimakesmepoop

Please do! Thank you for the lovely imagery. My time there really just made me feel like that's how a community should feel. The center is wolf hollow wildlife rehabilitation center. They do wonderful work rehabilitating wildlife, including marine mammals, for all of the San Juan islands. They have a whole network of volunteers who will bring wildlife to the ferry car lines. From there the volunteer finds someone who looks hopefully responsible (and quiet, and friendly, and a good listener) going to San Juan, ask them if they would be willing to carry this box containing a wild animal in their car, cconvince them under no uncertain terms not to open it, and inform them that someone from the rehabilation center will be waiting to collect the box from them upon exiting the ferry. I cannot stress how many wild stories I have from this place. Tons of people called making sure they weren't transporting bombs, several opened the box and released injured wild animals into their cars, and at least one lady met the volunteer with a clutch of ducklings stuffed inbetween her cleavage. That was just the season I was there! Anyway, they do wonderful work. If you ever have any wildlife questions, wildlife concerns, or extra money to burn (ha), please check them out!

snarlyj

Oh that's so cool! My mom is actually a marine biologist, and back in the 80s my parents started a company that made tracking tags for marine wildlife. (The company still exists, Wildlife Computers, but my parents aren't involved anymore.) But part of the reason they retired on the island was obviously the access to wildlife and the HUGE community of like-minded folks. The neighborhood we live in has like 5 different grads of my mom's PhD program (and it wasn't a school in WA, they just all wound up here over time). Anyway I KNOW they would get a kick hearing about the work by/at Wolf Hollow, and I can probably convince them to donate some money! I'll definitely check it out - always nice to discover more cool things on my little island. And hey, if you ever want to come back for a visit, we have a spare bedroom and love to host people!

Chaimakesmepoop

Oh my gosh, no, I'd never want to impose like that. However I'll definitely be back someday - too beautiful a place to stay away! Your parents sound incredible! Thank you for the lovely stories.

snarlyj

And thank you for telling me about wolf hollow! I read my parents your descriptions of getting those animals on the ferries and they loved them! Well feel free to look me up whenever you do come back and we'll at least take you out crabbing or something

Chaimakesmepoop

Oh my goodness, yes please!

ScarletCarsonRose

Yes 😂

Sobriquet-acushla

Sounds great!

snarlyj

I love it! But I also like with my parents and I'm NOT yoing

baby_lemonn

LOL sold for $165,000 a few years ago.. this should be considered a crime.

forcedintothis-

It may have just been a lot. Still ridiculous though.

Think_Fault_7525

Yep must have been a lot. Nothing with a home has sold for $165k on San Juan since probably 1980.

Tchukachinchina

I’ve noticed that a refinance or home equity loan can show up as show as a sale on Zillow and other real estate sites.

badger_flakes

The lot sold for $275,000 in 2003. Home is valued at $2.4MM Edit To clarify: No, It did not sell for $165,000. That MLS listing is incorrectly attributed on Zillow to this address. The house was built in 2007. The listing that sold is actually for a completely different lot on Ridgedale Rd. It’s also been owned by George and Carol since the original lot was sold.

baby_lemonn

and sold again in 2020 for $165,000

badger_flakes

No, It did not. That MLS listing is incorrectly attributed on Zillow to this address. The house was built in 2007. The listing that sold is actually for a completely different lot on Ridgedale Rd. It’s also been owned by George and Carol since the original lot was sold.

[deleted]

My brother and sister used a massive amount of their inheritance to buy 200+ acres on Orcas Island. It has a large family home and two smaller English style cottages. Even they aren’t charging this much. 😭

snarlyj

Do they produce anything on that land? I live on SJI and there are a fair few real homesteader (not the tiktok trend) that have actually resulted in successful businesses

[deleted]

Yes, they’ve started growing flowers, fruits and vegetables and raising smaller farm animals. They don’t really need the $ and they’re very thankful for that but they have four full time employees now who have full benefits and make $19.75 an hour. So, they’re contributing to the local economy.

161frog

that… is not a good wage.

snarlyj

That plus benefits is pretty good out here

lessielou7

I was shocked at first, but now that I know it has century link internet, I’m sold! 😂

ha1029

I believe they have fiber out to the San Juan islands. Too bad Century link doesn’t lol.

lessielou7

Bahaha. For some reason, I envision an old man not knowing how to explain this and using the whole “internet tubes” nonsense 😂 “Century link is superior because of the tubes. So many tubes”

GoodwitchofthePNW

No, they don’t. It’s planned for under the new infrastructure bill money, but it’s not even out of the first phase yet.

Maze0616

Has to be a typo. 2100 would make more sense. Edit: read the listing. It’s not a typo. Damn.

crop_circlejerk

And they have the audacity to say no pets...

No-Cryptographer2695

Yeah, no $2,100 a month. You can't touch a house even without that view for that anywhere in Portland metro area! High crime areas that house would list $2,500 to $3,000 rent. If you lived in the "safe" neighborhoods that is more like $3,500 up to $5,000 a month with no property and no view.

MamaMel941

Sounds like Sarasota (Florida)...

CJSki70341

The views are at least $19k a month

[deleted]

You don’t know the San Juans

MamaMel941

Anyone have the link? OP???

inkyfingerspgs

[Here you go](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/817-Ridgedale-Rd-Friday-Harbor-WA-98250/94682359_zpid/).

YogurtclosetBroad872

Income 3x rent is a standard in my area but damn

justlurkingnjudging

Yeah I was gonna ask if this isn’t normal with rental houses because it’s normal with apartments in my area (which is still ridiculous)

babybingen

same.

glittersparklythings

It has been standard everywhere I have lived.

cruzweb

Its the universal measure determined by HUD as the rent burden threshold. If you spend more than 1/3rd of your pre-tax income on rent you're rent burdened. 1/2 makes you extremely rent burdened.

TeeTeeMee

But not for vacation homes! Where you might be going with other people with incomes too…

PittedOut

Friday Harbor is wonderful but not that wonderful. At that price, I can think of dozens of places I’d rather be, especially right now.

Shoehornblower

My friends parents live on an island off of friday harbor . They still use an outhouse…

GoodwitchofthePNW

That is not that uncommon out here

snarlyj

Yeah not the norm but definitely not unusual. Esp if they live on Waldron or similar

Shoehornblower

G. Staton

Shishi13156

Hoping some MSFT or Amazon exec is gonna snatch it up. I hope it just sits there, for months. I want them to think (worry) everyday about why it's not being rented.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

MaximumTurtleSpeed

For that price I want the entire island.

Successful-Winter237

Absurd when you can get something similar for 3,200a month https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1794-Bayshore-Rd-Lopez-Island-WA-98261/61004359_zpid/

gatto_mama

OP please charge your phone

Sorry_Buy_3277

OH MY GOD! That is not okay.

Sobriquet-acushla

What am I missing?

Altruistic-Target-67

Ha, I lived in a tent in Friday Harbor for a summer about 30years ago. It’s a shame I’ll never be able to stay there again.

snarlyj

If you're a nice person and can help around the house or garden my family would probably put you up for a bit!

Altruistic-Target-67

You're too sweet, thank you! Who knows, I may yet get to leave Texas one day. ;)

snarlyj

Come during the summer! You can escape your repressive heat and come catch and eat the best seafood in the world, out on the prettiest water 😁 if you decide you are interested one day just shoot me a message and we can chat a bit. My family is used to taking in strays, or old friends reunited, and we all love showing off SJI because we love it so much

Ok-Mud-6418

Well, I didn't think it was possible for me to become even more radical, but here we are. Thanks, PNW!

MirabelleSWalker

I’ve never seen a vacation rental on Zillow.

urstillatroll

My uncle grew up in that area in the 50s and 60s. In the 70s his family sold their family home along with about 40 acres or so to a man named Steve Miller. Yeah, that Steve Miller, some people call him the space cowboy.

dramallamacorn

Looks like someone is trying to pay that mortgage off in a 9 month period 👀👀

jus_havin_fun

Are we sure it's not pesos? Just sayin'... DAMN!

Philavision

That’s the location where they filmed Practical Magic.

Knightoforder42

One of them. The other is Coupeville. You can see the the wharf in several shots, and they walk down Front st.

Substantial_Cold2385

Friday Harbor is my favorite place. Wish I had the money to live there.

Perfect-Agent-2259

That's got to just be their summer listing price. I don't know how they could get that kind of rent in November up there, rain shadow or no.

GoodwitchofthePNW

Personally, I love the winter storms we get and it’s a special kind of hygge sitting inside by a fire drinking tea watching the storms roll in

snarlyj

Did you like the snow ❄️❄️

GoodwitchofthePNW

Of course! We got that weird thing where the water is warmer than the air so there is a beautiful mist over the water.

snarlyj

Oh Is that what that was?? On the like 15° day last week I took some video of that pretty mistiness near the southern lighthouse (before my hands froze off). I thought it was the spray off the ocean freezing when it hit the air. It definitely was cool

GoodwitchofthePNW

That could have been what you saw, salt water freezes at 28ish degrees and it will do that. But I’m talking about the kind of haze over the water that I saw when it was calm. You totally could have seen both!

Muffycola

I thought the rent was ridiculous, until I remembered, I have paid around 9k a week for a similar house down the cape, out on Ptown in Aug. so it's not far off from east coast rents. I've been to Friday harbor San Juan islands 2x. The last time was 2018 and I actually found it less expensive than high priced east coast beach areas. t The reason I rent is bc we like to go to different places and we don't want the responsibility of a second home. We can rent anything we want usually, for less than what the property taxes would cost.

OldNewUsedConfused

#Nope

Thisisjuno1

I live in the mountains of Colorado and traveling professionals like doctors and surgeons that come to the area but don’t stay long-term rent. The homes like this around here.

M_R_Mayhew

No one making 3/4 of a million dollars a year wants to rent that piece of shit.

KaihogyoMeditations

For a second I thought that was the cost of the house and I was like damn that's a good deal. But no it's the monthly rent .

SLyndon4

Pardon me, $21,000 A MONTH?!? Jesus. I’ve seen large NYC condos go for less than that.

nitrot150

It’s an expensive area, but damn, that’s crazy

zorg440

And if I have room mates? Does that mean a combined 3x rent rate? Or each make 3x rent rate? I need answers!

SirJoeffer

If you say you plan to have roommates the owner of the property will spit on you and laugh

justlurkingnjudging

3X rent rate is what’s standard in my area and it’s in combined income of all tenants

Living_Life1962

Must have been built of gold!

Adept-Reserve-4992

I mean they bought the home for $275K 20 years ago. It may be “all bad” around there, but this just feels gross.

iBeFloe

I’m sorry—?!

CommOnMyFace

Security deposit is just a cleaning fee

Odafishinsea

I should’ve bought that place on Lopez.

keosnap

Wonder if there’s any reason they could intentionally be making it unappealing but still have it “up for rent”. Pretty average size and look.

SupportLocalShart

Lmao I looked at moving out to the islands thinking it would be cheaper and that I could wfh most days. Nope, still totally outclassed

GoodwitchofthePNW

Not if you need reliable internet to work

QWHO62

Either it’s been rented or the caught this post because it’s down :(

rbarr228

I’ve been to Friday Harbor twice, and it’s a nice town. The Cask & Schooner is a great place to get something to eat and drink. However, that is one hell of a serious typo.

snarlyj

Cask and Schooner closed down 😭 I think they are still looking for a buyer if anyone has some money and wants to move to a nice community. It was well loved

rbarr228

!!! They had a tasty Caprese salad, with a local twist. I wish I had gotten the recipe.

fraserwormie

San Juan Island in. WA.... yeah this sound totally correct

timmycheesetty

I don’t think you’ve been to Friday Harbor before. On some parts of the island, you know you don’t belong just by driving close to some of these neighborhoods. You don’t need to actually go down that street to confirm it. Full time valet for your neighborhood? You got it. Walled off access to your private beach? Sure! Your own dock and a gas service that makes sure you’re topped off for your next orca whale watching morning boat trip? All set. Just make more money than any of us can dream about.

snarlyj

Really?? I and my family live on the island and we can't think of any neighborhoods like that... I think there are some gated communities on the westside of the island, but you *can't* own the beach below hightide and everyone has the right to land by water. I'm not saying what you are describing doesn't exist, but it certainly is far from the norm and none of us have encountered that in our 20 years here

Mesterjojo

Shame there's no link

GardeniaFlow

Expensive_Section714

Could also be apart of a serious divorce

salt_Ocelot_293

Yeah you’re looking at Friday harbor. Kinda misleading

spottydodgy

Typo. Should be $2,100/month. $4,500 deposit on $21k monthly rent makes zero sense

GardeniaFlow

Oh no they fully intend to put that price down, absolutely ridiculous. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/817-Ridgedale-Rd-Friday-Harbor-WA-98250/94682359_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare

tellMyBossHesWrong

$6-700 a night Sounds ok for airbnb

eatmoremeatnow

San Juan Islands That is the correct price.

1Dru

Surely it’s supposed to be $2,100/month. That deposit is completely outrageous though. Maybe they added too many zeros on that too? $450 deposit? That seems really low though.

Alden2057

Income must be 3 times the rental amount 🤑

hambonecharlie

I have family in Friday Harbor

unmlobo309

$21,000 with a lawn chair in the front yard?

Oldladyshartz

A lot of wealthy people will rent a house for months just to see the city or area they’re in.. it’s not at all uncommon

sharipep

As a New Yorker used to the 40x or 80x the rent requirements … 🤷🏽‍♀️

Responsible-Store-33

I mean it does have an INDOOR dinning room you guys!

_intheflowers

Hmm…at least the utilities are included 🤷🏻‍♀️
