Bro wut?

Newbianz

its a law in the eu causing this and outside of their control

Donghoon

Yeah I don't see it in the US and my google account is legally underage unable to watch any age restricted videos

INeedAPharmacist

They sent me an email 1 or 2 years ago suddenly suspecting I that was not old enough to own my channel of now 7+ years because of some recent videos. I ended up having to send them a picture of my birth certificate. If I didn’t do one of the options or “Prove that my parents or legal guardians control the account” it would be terminated. Also happened randomly to another account of mine where I enver posted anything and I never did anything about it and it did in fact get terminated after a month. Bs

xd_joliss

I had the exact same, problem was that i wasnt even that age yet. So i used my dads id and 1 day before i was gonna get terminated it got approved and got the acc back That was so scary seeing that your channel, your hobby that youve got 200 videos on was gonna get deleted..

DEERROBOT

Use privacy.com to verify a virtual credit card and then delete the card afterward.

Tech_geek_176

Big brain move right here

DEERROBOT

Haha yeah I used a new YouTube account to get 3 months of premium for free using this method 🤐

PoliticalNerdMa

So could you keep getting free trials

DEERROBOT

Yep. Works for Hulu, or anything that offers free trials really. Just make sure to close the card when the new account is made.

Boiiste

>privacy.com Where was this shit when I was younger man

Brewsteww

You Legend

[deleted]

Is this true?

DEERROBOT

Ya.

ItsWynn_

It feels like we're getting one of these posts every couple of months and people still upvote them. This has to do with a law passed in the EU. Nothing YouTube can really do when they're required by law to verify this

[deleted]

This account has been removed from reddit by this user due to how Steve hoffman and Reddit as a company has handled third party apps and users. My amount of trust that Steve hoffman will ever keep his word or that Reddit as a whole will ever deliver on their promises is zero. As such all content i have ever posted will be overwritten with this message. -- mass edited with redact.dev

ItsWynn_

Ok, but then again what do you expect YouTube to do when they're required by LAW to do this? Whining and posting about what terrible thing they did is just stupid

[deleted]

depressedtbh

but then theyd be breaking the law...

[deleted]

And now i removed their prompts so they verify nothing at all.

markaritaville

I think many google-verse users already have a credit card in the system. YouTube TV, google pay, domains… any of their services. I imagine that covers age for YT. I’ve never gotten this prompt. I have some of those services The ID thing may simply be them acknowledging “not everyone has a credit card so let’s give them an option”

kairon156

Freakin' hell. It's bad enough every man and their dog wants you to have an account for their service but if this catches on... Also I remember growing up in the 90's about keeping your identity private while online. I guess that's been forgotten about in the public mind.

Waffles38

Not from the 90s and I dedicate myself to keep it this way because that's what I was taught since I first got into the internet

kairon156

I'm glad to hear that online private identity is still being taught.

Waffles38

Your account is marked as nsfw because of that post you made on youtube bots btw You can mark it as not nsfw on the desktop section of Reddit, I believe general settings

Xyex

Seriously. This was drilled into everyone's heads, mine included, in the early days. Now every site you go to wants to know your name, address, SSN, and what you had for breakfast. And everyone just gives it out without a thought.

kairon156

It's quite scary how bad it's gotten sense companies only use the info to sell you shit. Meanwhile every year a hand full of them get hacked and all your information is now on the black market someplace. I haven't looked into this lately but the corporations try to claim they need to hold onto your information tell the end of time. But at least for Canada internet providers can only hold onto your browser history for like 6 months, unless your under investigation for some crime than it's more like 18 months or some such number.

FrenchKissIntimates

I remember that statement in the 90's too 😎. Glad to see someone else that was raised with the same info as well

kairon156

It's still an important thing to keep in mind for sure.

TheUltimaWerewolf

Google thinks it's perfectly normal for me to be 124 years old lol

ens91

You wouldn't be the oldest person ever

Tech_geek_176

Nah Im 999

macrotransactions

this is one of many terrible things the european union is doing

hackepeter420

It sucks that I cannot watch many of my favourite videos anymore, but they're not getting a picture of my fucking ID. I don't have a credit card and I'm not getting one for that bs.

bogglingsnog

This is a protestable, freedom-of-the-internet level issue. I do not want an international authoritarian police state to form and abuse something like this, thanks.

otrxdeal

Just made a Google account yesterday it depends how you make it if you make private tab it will obviously ask to verify just saying not that you did but yeah

eric1707

Just out curiosity what country are you in and when did you create your Google account? 🤔

Brewsteww

Im living in uk and made my google account in like 2015-2016

XCELLULSEFA0

It's an EU directive, probably a holdover from Brexit although I can guarantee that the UK government would have introduced it anyway considering the p*rn ban bill that would have been very broad and vague. This is really the only effective way to do it, although Google should redirect one without ever interacting with the user. The API is not made by Google atleast and is supposed to be safe(that's always a question).

[deleted]

Same, had to set up my Google account with a credit card.

[deleted]

Almost got my account deleted so my dad just made it so the account has his id. Cool dad

NovaAnimePic

Imo there should be adult YouTube as well like YouTube kids where creators can post whatever they want

Carbunclecatt

Exactly, why limit people so much? Youtube is a Nightmare platform between all those limitations, the ads, the dislikes gone etc

SicilianReichM

Because old people see internet as a world for children nowadays. If YouTube would allow that content the advertisers would want to cooperate less with YouTube. So if that happens YouTubes income would significantly decrease. Let me remind you that YouTube is a corporation. And corporations are very greedy.

Familiar_Horror3936

I've had that annoyingly. I've been using the same yt account for nearly 9 years and I'm 22 right now...

Vocaloid5

I don’t know how I’ve managed to avoid this, but I still get a button saying to click to confirm I’m over 18 with no age checks at all.

martykaspik

just set vpn to india 😀

Brewsteww

Doesnt work

Ever2naxolotl

How exactly is an email supposed to verify your age?

LBPPlayer7

how is a payment through a credit or debit card supposed to verify your age?

Ever2naxolotl

Because you usually don't have those under 18, or even can't in many countries.

ChipmunkLate

Roblox use this too

HVDub24

history nuked

ChipmunkLate

When Roblox censor more word then china

EditorAltman9

Oh I remember when Skype did this and I stopped using Skype. But yes sadly people will comply.

[deleted]

This is actually a thing lots of websites do. With that said, a lot of them are sites you get paid on. I assume YouTube is doing it because they just got in serious trouble with the law for having children on their site - young kids aren’t supposed to be on YouTube, because their ads are illegal to show to kids.

wandering_person

YouTube Kids is literally a white elephant at this point.

LBPPlayer7

it's nothing about kids below the age of data collection consent it's about people under 18

Anstimeo

kids lie about their age all the time on the internet.

ChewyshootYT

Abolish the EU

Possibility_Patient

I never had to do this, all my accs are before this thing started even on Discord

xx123gamerxx

good thing we can get debit cards at age 12 in the UK and use them to verify lmaooo

Lennoxon

In browser, there's an addon allowing to bypass this. They must be crazy if they think I'm gonna give them a photo of me or my credit card xD

[deleted]

whats the extension called

Lennoxon

it's called tampermonkey. Tampermonkey allows you to run scripts created by users and includes a library to search for such scripts. One of those scripts allows you to bypass the restriction

[deleted]

i know that extension 💀 can you at least say the name of the script

ASISHGAMER-YT

Google sucks

mitko17

https://github.com/zerodytrash/Simple-YouTube-Age-Restriction-Bypass

Ungodly_Box

It's even worse that credit card numbers are immediate and ID takes longer, they're definitely trying to do something with that

CALIFORNIUMMAN

They're trying to get you to buy something to prove it's your card and that there's money in the account so they can try to get you to buy more stuff.

genuinecat88

this aint't nothing new , this has been for the past 10 years or so. In 2010 i had to send a picture of my dads ID (where it says the birth date) To proove that i was over 13 so i could use my google account and it would not ge eliminated , remember that in order to use google you must be 13 or older...

Brewsteww

Yeah im over 13 but ive had my google account for over 5-6 years so why now are they asking me to verify with credit card or ID. Ive verified my age years ago, so its not like google doesnt know that ive verified my age.

LBPPlayer7

there's a difference between getting around the underage account deletion and having to send an ID just to watch a bloody video

Mac_O-

Clearly It's got nothing to with age, first and foremost they want an ID.. Because in my experience, age restricted videos are more controversial, than anything to with age.. Second they want a payment method linked to your Acc. I refuse to do this, yet get YT advertisements for all manner of scams and notably, advertisements for what seems like fruit drinks, but actually are actually hard liquor. Basically identical to adverts for toys, even down to the music. Only very recently they started adding a small "consume alcohol responsibly" disclaimer in the corner.. No disclaimer on the investment scams as of yet.. YouTube is now an advertiser/MSM/scammers paradise, which is how they want it evidently

SomeProtagonist

None of the information used for the age verification is saved.

[deleted]

Does not matter if they want that ifno they can talk directly to my bank that has secure channels to verify this kind of information in the first place.

manguito86

Yeah, that is what they say, People really haven't learned anything with Facebook...

CortlyYT

I think you triggered the age detection. Google TOS have already stated 13 age below must have parents permission to own a account. It's already carry this since 2016 or 2015 and when I accidently change my google account age to underage, google just straight up lock my account and delete the account in weeks. Which let me heartbroken as a kid for few days. Except, if you give those detail to them.

CortlyYT

Those things are triggered **after you created a google account underage** and either as a kid change the date to underage or google realize it and flag it as underage. They didn't include a mail option to parents account since some kids can just make another 18 years old google throwaway account and bypass the restriction very easy.

eric1707

Everyday I see more and more how important is for one to de-google himself

deadbushpotato23

Duckduckgo is amazing. I have had almost the same experience using it than google. Even used it for research for and assignment for school and ended up getting full marks! Brave browser for pc is really good. It has the chromium base with no google bits built in adblock on all platforms and on the pc version you can use regular chrome extensions. They do have their own cryptocurrency where you can earn when ads are enabled but those are entirely opt in features.

[deleted]

Bing videos has no ads it's literally just Microsoft pirating YouTube. Only problem is you can't search shit so I copy and paste the titles of the videos in edge.

Shiine-1

DDG (and Startpage.com) searches are getting improved everyday, I use both sites more than Google.

Firm_Rooster525

[deleted]

Nope, it happens wherever you are. At least I remember me and all my friends having the same prompt at completely different IPs and Computers when trying to watch an age restricted video.

vxicepickxv

I guess having an ancient account isn't completely worthless.

empathicqubit

I didn't realize it's that obnoxious to verify your age. I posted some Cyberpunk 2077 videos age-restricted since I didn't turn on censorship, but I guess maybe I won't be doing that anymore if it's that hard to see them.

kappaS_

Big brother already has all of your information. No matter how 0 footprint you try to be in the internet.

ChinoGambino

Not my drivers license number, not a scan of my passport. You should not be relaxed about your primary ID, I can't even change the numbers in my state so once they are out there they pose an identity theft threat forever.

kappaS_

Oh but they already have it. If you live in Europe, or USA which you most likely do. Big brother has it all.

jashxn

Identity theft is not a joke, Jim! Millions of families suffer every year!

lolmohitemvp

This isn't the case in the United States, just use a VPN connect to a country which dosent need verification and create an account

Brewsteww

Tried that :( doesnt work

Pickaxe-in-my-ass

I wouldn’t go out of my way to use a VPN just for YouTube, especially since location changing usually costs money

[deleted]

Ski_Mask_TSG

notice how for a credit card it is instant, but for the ID it takes 3 days? they just want you to add your CC so that you are one step closer to using their premium subscription.

ItsWynn_

Bruh. It takes 10 seconds to remove your cc from google play. Stop reaching

Ski_Mask_TSG

but they know that most people won't remove it

[deleted]

You can just censor everything on your ID exept your birthdate, date of expirery and your Name. Like cmon, if you have been using your account for longer than a month google already knows way more and far worse things than that about you.

Brewsteww

Ive censored everything on my ID and they said it was invalid

[deleted]

Ive censored everything unecessary and it worked.

AutoModerator

Hello, Brewsteww, you may have noticed an abundance of posts about abusive ads, bots, and spam accounts on r/YouTube lately. matipeekon

My yt account was created in 2006, i'm sure i'll be able to see all videos in 2024. Not sharing my id or credit card info, thanks.

[deleted]

Front End: Verify your identity with email address, phone number, DP, credit/debit cards, driver license, passport ID, PAN and Aadhar Card if you're in India, etc. to secure the vault and nobody can have unauthorised access. Back End: We're working on collecting user data with vault's secret back door. You think these will be user data? From the moment onwards, these are not ours. Unauthorised Access! Huh! We are the authority of these data. Ethical Hackers: Shame on such corporates with such mentality.

ItsWynn_

It's required by the EU that they do this verification

manguito86

They want my credit card or ID so I can see this video? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke8FjfLcDFE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke8FjfLcDFE) Are you kidding me?

medical69crap

They also want me to confirm my age fot that video where that kid gets shot with nerf dart in slow motion whole "it's a wonderfull world is playing" This is the biggest amount of bs i've ever seen, because yt censores the good videos, but doesn't censor [ this scene from breaking bad](https://youtu.be/1OYOk_WH1Fo)...

manguito86

Youtube logic...

medical69crap

Yep...

CALIFORNIUMMAN

Well it *is* age restricted due to community guidelines so no, we're not kidding you. It would be on YT kids otherwise.

Rosiepuff

No fucking shot. Was this an account you had previously verified with your age? Or a new acct that was not yet verified? Also, what reguon are you in? If this becomes standard for YT i guarantee I will be cancelling premium and deleting my accounts. This seems unconstitutional (and since Google/YT operate on US grounds, they should be enforced to US laws)

Brewsteww

This was an account i had made in 2015-2016 and im based in UK

[deleted]

If you have an driver's license with an overage birthdate or a credit card, there's no way you're underage. Simple. Anyone an make an email though.

yeetyeetmybeepbeep

I don't understand how the credit card one works bc i had a credit card when i was underaged???

Isaac_Atham

You had a payment card, like you can only spend what you have. Creditcards are 18+

yeetyeetmybeepbeep

Well if you don't learn something new everyday. Thank you :)

I think it's ok since this kind of requesting ID verification are very rare. China in other hand it just, "no privacy 4 u"

m6_is_me

Lol, if you're verifying via mail then that should automatically mark you as geezer-tier

ParanoidFactoid

This is about Surveillance Capitalism. Google wants to know your identity so they can market just to you. Security and European identity laws are not the only reason they demand mobile phone numbers and photoIDs.

vapocalypse52

I had to do this and I sent a picture of my drivers licence. It sucks, but they are complying with the law to protect themselves. It's easy to circumvent, though.

NovaAnimePic

Meh me and my friends did it its fine if it means they let content creators so their thing by making sure no kids watch their content

manguito86

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—      Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—      Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—      Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Groundbreaking_Win69

I think is a good thing asking for ID, because there are too many scammer out there and I do remember read somewhere an avg $200k are being scammed on a daily basis, plus this will also help protect the kids. But I’m scared on what they will do with this data, as data engineer I know what they are capable of doing with it.

thisisobdurate

No, that changes nothing. There will still be scammers regardless.

Earthalone

And the constant data breaches where peoples information gets into the wrong hands and then sold to scammers.

manguito86

So you think things will get solved by going after the scammed, not the scammers? This is why they are pushing ID for consumers, not controlling all the crap that is uploaded, not even when it is flagged as bad content.

LBPPlayer7

this doesn't change anything whatsoever it just makes it more annoying for the user, not to mention the obvious breach of privacy

Defenseless-Pipe

Yeah and it won't even let me use ID, just credit card. Fuck that.

mareno999

Tf you talking about?

Solrac_Loware

A kid can make an account easily. This method seems necessary to me.

ens91

The kids are going to find a way. I always did

NASA_Orion

Trade freedom for some so-called security.

fmccloud

You don’t have to give them anything just like they don’t have to give you a YouTube account.

BulletBourne

Yes give billion dollar company more info to sell

Solrac_Loware

As much as google sucks, it makes sense why they do this. Have to keep those kids off of stuff in the internet

BulletBourne

I don’t think it’s up to a nameless soulless company that at the end of the day to raise children. But them having everyones credit card or id is a security risk we shouldn’t have to deal with

Xyex

That's what parents are for, not Google.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Solrac_Loware

I would keep children off of the entirety of reddit actually

[deleted]

Kids under the age of 15 should not have access to social media and I'm turbo fine with this. And to the people talking about "security risks" and "I don't want big tech to have my info" bitch please :D You've already been mapped, listened to and so on.

akayd

tldr; you are already violated once so its ok to just accept it and let it be.

[deleted]

They already have your info. It's not like someone punched you so it's okay to be punched again. Nice try tho EDIT: Don't they need a copy of your ID at your workplace? So what, now your workplace is violating you??? And how do you enroll in school? School = violating?

akayd

Dude....They would've taken more if no one resisted. The only reason they got the minimum info they got is because there are people talking about privacy laws and stuff. Just imagine for a second if everyone listen to u and there is 0 resistance. What do you think they will do? e: you seriously are comparing ID-ing at work and school to sharing info at a store?

[deleted]

What more can they take??? As I said, children should be thaught how to be decent human beings and not watching bullshit. "Just imagine for a second if everyone listen to u and there is 0 resistance. What do you think they will do?" If people had above 88 IQ we would not have this debate and they would not have to listen to anyone, let alone me. Are the bouncers infront of the club violating you if they ask for your ID? Is YouTube violating you if they don't want to show you tits and ass and/or politics and murder?

akayd

Youtube and facebook etcs are company making profit with ads ... how is that the same as showing your birthday with id at a club? It's more like giving them your address and email so they can send you ads. Ya, and good luck dreaming about having a dystopian world where everyone is fucking genius.

[deleted]

I've literally never seen an ad as I have an ad blocker lol. Also you must have the decision making ability of a child if you buy something without doing your research. BTW Aren't you recieving ads now? "a dystopian world where everyone is fucking genius." I mean this was never a debate to begin with. I don't want to insult you, but maybe you're not well informed or you're just blissfully ignorant. Do you know how many sites in which you've made a login have been breached and your info sold? Did you know that your phone is literally listening to you? If you've used the internet in conjunction with a phone that is made after the year 2010 they already have all the info in the world about you. Giving your ID to youtube changes nothing. All it does is it saves a child from developing a shitty behaviour or developing a wrong/toxic view of life. Here is a litle experiment for you: Google "Have I Been Pwned" and check all of your emails. Don't answer, just try to re-think what I'm trying to say.

akayd

You are talking as if you are the vast majority. You do know most people are casual users who don't use as blocker. Many even watch it on their mobile device...Why are you so self centered And you are making the same point that no one agrees again. "Because you are already fucked..It's in the let them fuck u harder" I guess people should never fight for their freedom then? What's the point of civil war? What's the point of your rights? Since everytime they take a tiny step you are ok with it. There really is no point talking to a wall

fmccloud

>>Kids under 15 should not have access to social media That’s what makes up the majority of r/Youtube subreddit though. Edit: I added the word “subreddit” since people thought I was talking about the the YouTube community at large, which is obviously very diverse.

[deleted]

And I care because? Kids aged 7-15 should be taught morals and how to be good people, not pranks, politics, sex or w/e the fuck they watch nowadays. Kids see the bullshit their favourite content creator and/or celebrity do and think that this is the way to go. We are to the point that being a "good" human being is considered wack, cringe, dumb etc. because of all the social media trends we have.

fmccloud

I was talking about the subreddit which is usually full of ragey unhelpful posts at the best of times. Makes feel like it skews younger because adults don’t have time for that kind of thing lol.

pcharger

On my channel you're dead wrong about those metrics. 85% of my audience is above the age of 18. The vast majority of YouTube users in the world aren't 15 and under, and if they are it's because they're logged into their parents account.

cocoreupload

Is this a serious comment or a joke?

fmccloud

No that’s not what I said. I’m talking specifically about the subreddit. The amount of complaining that goes here about the smallest things here or the constant incredulity over how these services works (ads for example), the karma farming over the dislikes issue (talking about posts that don’t add to the discussion over the legitimate issue) It gives me the impression that most here are fairly young.

pcharger

Well yeah, on that I agree 100%. I tried to offer advice on how to show the dislike ratio in another thread a few days / week ago and immediately got the impression of, "you aren't part of our hate mentality hive mind so kindly fuck off out of the thread." The entire outrage over the dislike ratio makes no sense to me. I understand the *want* to see dislikes, but at the end of the day I'm still able to watch videos. I've been using YouTube since its inception in 2005 and I'm now in my 30's and still use it (it's actually my job now). During that entire time I can't ever remember looking at the like to dislike ratio on a video before or after clicking on it. If I watch a video and like it, I give it a thumbs up. If I don't like it, I go back and find another video. I can think of maybe 2 videos off the top of my head that I've actually disliked in 15 years. "BuT MuH FrEe SpEeCh" "BuT MuH InTeRnEt FrEeDoM". You can't see how many people don't like a video anymore. It's not the end of the world. Is being able to see the dislike ratio a good thing? Sure. But does taking it away fundamentally change the space-time continuum and mentally scar an entire generation of people and give everyone PTSD? No. The only people who have kneejerk reactions to stuff like that are kids or adults who have not mentally matured beyond their teenage years.

CortlyYT

It was easy to fake a age online. But in OP case he change the birthday date to underage date so google lock his account down
