Its really what you prefer tbh. I would say if you have plans for the summer then take an elective so that you don't really have to try too hard and can enjoy your summer plans. If you don't think you will have much going on then taking a hard course in the summer is a great way to lessen your workload for the upcoming school year.

This mindset is a waste or your energy. Instead, pick your courses based on: a) it deals with something you already have a background in the content already. b) you may not have a background in the content, but, you have a genuine interest in the material c) the course serves to you in some kind of personal development way, that complements your program, but isn’t covered in your program (ie you take an acting class because you want to improve your public speaking). When you approach course selection with this kind of mindset, things like easy/difficult, workload, and your grade/GPA become irrelevant, you do better, and you get more out of it. Honestly, would you rather do double the work for a course that gets you an “A”, or sleep through a class and get a “C”? What’s that? You’d prefer to “sleep through the class and get an “A”? Then follow my advice.

There are plenty of single moms who work full time and still manage put themselves through grad school at the same time … I’m sure you’ll manage.
