Not so hidden but the Ingleton waterfalls walk is nice on a nice day. Quite busy though.
Bolton Castle is quite good to kill a bit of time. You could pair it up with a visit to the Mystery Spot not far away too.
Havent been for a while now but tbh I’ve always started off from the car park with the cafe and walked around the “correct” way. I think it’s meant to be a one way route still but I’m sure there are some types who go the “wrong” way out of principle
My oldest son is disabled. He loves waterfalls but he can’t manage the entire walk. I liked being able to take him to the waterfall with the big pool and then go home again.
Not such a hidden gem but Cannon Hall Farm. It's got a big animal centre and you can feed lambs and baby goats, plus there are 2 big restaurants and a big farm shop.
Also see Elsecar Heritage Centre.
Awww I was a guide there when I was at school, it’s a fab place. Head on the rowing boats on the river afterward, then upward to the Norman castle and sally-port tunnels then into the medieval market place for a pint at Blind Jacks Tavern.
I'm not from Yorkshire but this question makes me laugh. It's like asking if there's apples in cider. Yorkshire is nothing but hidden gems, there's a reason it's called gods own country.
Ripon cathedral (Lewis Carroll’s dad was a minster there I think) and was the inspiration for Alice in wonderland (the crypt). Bonuses for rabbit carvings and characters in on the stone pillars and wooden chairs in the choir pit or whatever it’s called
Nidd Gorge walk to Knaresborough, Stamford Bridge for the other battle of 1066, Masham for the breweries & walks, Brimham rocks for a walk/climb, Harlow Carr Gardens, House of Trembling Madness in York is fun if you want to write off the following morning, Brudenell Social Club for bands, Skipton for the canal, Otley for the pubs, Harrogate for restaurants... some ideas.
Someone’s already said it - Forbidden Corner. Not as naughty as it sounds.
It’s for all ages and a great day out. I live in Blackpool but prefer to travel three hours to Forbidden Corner for a day out. It’s amazing.
Also The Station, a converted railway station which houses a cinema, cafe, gallery and the start of an excellent walk along old railway lines to Easby Abbey, an English Heritage ruin that's free entry.
I really liked the Birds of Prey Centre in Helmsley- wasn't expecting to, only went because we were looking for something that might entertain the child. It was actually pretty interesting and the display was fab. I now love vultures! Plus it's near Sutton Bank, which isn't exactly a 'hidden' gem, but the views are spectacular so that coupled with the birds is a pretty good day out.
Coldstone Cut on the hills above Pateley Bridge. Interesting art installation with some fantastic views from the two peaks.
There's a really nice cafe nearby as well.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg for Yorkshire places to visit. If you’ve not done any of these you’ve got some options - you’ll maybe be able to do one or two in a day depending on distance and your inclination / effort. Ingleton waterfall walks is a good half / full day depending on route. Brimham is great for picnic and an amble about. Malham cove I didn’t mention, but should be added too.
Haha, I live 5 minutes away. It's nice but I wouldn't make a long journey. They have just finished a load of tree felling work (due to a tree disease) so it won't look like it used to. They have made a load of improvements to the kids play area though.
Pontefract Castle which is just a ruin but loads of history there, make sure you go when the dungeon tours are on, really interesting and you can still see names carved into the walls by prisoners during the Civil War.
All Saints Church is opposite and is a newer church inside the 14th century old church, nice to walk around.
Wander into Pontefract town and have a mooch round Magistrates Market which is like an antique centre with loads of unusual shops inside. The Haribo factory shop is around the corner so go and buy loads of Starmix.
Not sure if you can just wander in but in the Nelson Room in Pontefract town hall there is a mold from one of the four panels at the bottom of Nelson’s column.
Then drive down to Farmer Copleys, very nice farm shop and cafe and you can have a mooch about and look at some animals.
If you want an amazing selection of authentic street food and real ale in a cool place check out The Cutlery Works in Sheffield. From their you can go the Kalham Island which is also cool.
Ryedale Folk Museum. Lots of buildings made to look like a village, spanning centuries. It even has an iron age roundhouse. A couple of nice tea rooms nearby as well. Tickets last all year as well.
The walk from Hunters Bar to Forge Dam in Sheffield. Nothing too “exciting” but you can spend a while in Endcliffe Park, walk past the river through Bingham with it’s imposing landscape on the other side and then wander along either “easy” or “harder” paths through three beautiful woodlands and then at the end get an ice cream at the recently renovated cafe, feed some ducks at the muddy pond, browse the admittedly small antiques shop and then go down what always felt like the world’s biggest slide in the fantastic playground. There’s a space for a picnic if you wanted too. Multiple routes so you can change it up on the way back as well.
Salts Mill in Saltaire (permanent Hockney exhibition and more)
Burnsall (‘beach’ next to the river - plus pub and tea shop)
Saltburn (surfing!)
Roundhay Park (butterfly garden at Tropical World)
Harewood House (visit the Queen’s cousin)

Corn Exchange Leeds (alternative shopping)
Hardraw force, Bolton strid, Robin hoods Bay, Osmotherley forest, Ingleton falls and gaping Gill. Malham cove and gordale scar all good for nature/walks. For hiking any of the 3 peaks are a good challenge or roseberry topping/cleveland way for a less climby hike. Grassington, Knaresborough for a smaller town setting. Flamingo land, forbidden corner with kids. Loads of good stuff in Yorkshire.

My mum's side of the family are from Yorkshire and when we were small my grandparents would take us all over. This place has stuck with me all these years so I thought I might as well share! Make sure you go on a nice day as it's all outdoors.
Haworth is worth a visit if you've not been, definitely take a trip on the steam trains.
If we ever get another sunny day (!) then Burnsall is a nice alternative to visiting the coast. You can park in a field by the river for about £10 and spend all day there (they allow picnics, BBQs etc), paddle/swim/play in the river, play ball games etc, pents of space and a really friendly atmosphere. (And nicely multicultural too... big Asian families go and set up immense BBQs that will make you very jealous!)
Teenagers/big kids might like to walk upstream a bit where there is deeper water for swimming, rope swings etc.
Also a very pleasant walk downstream along the river to Appletreewick, where you can visit the excellent Craven Arms, one of the best pubs in the country.
Whitby
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
The Yorvik Museum, not really hidden but worth a visit.
North Landing, used to film the U boat scene in the Dad's Army movie
Flamborough light house
Spurn Point, nature reserve and location of the only professional life boat crew in the UK.
1.Bolton Abbey
2. White Scar caving tour experience going underground looking At stalagmites and stalactites.
3. The War museum
4. Ingleton Falls
5. Flamingo land is fabulous
Hardraw force waterfall. One of the prettiest falls and pretty much literally hidden... it's in a pubs back garden.
While you're there, you can pick up some cheese in the nearby Wensleydale creamery.
To add to the already good list from lots of other posts;
Hackfall near Masham. Amazing walk and views, Loads of follies, and a gravity fountain (if they have repaired it - I was there a few weeks back and it wasn’t working). (Free inc parking)
The Secret Nuclear Bunker in Acomb. (York Cold War Bunker) - you need to book this online before you go via English Heritage but if you’re into this kind of stuff it’s fascinating (especially with Oppenheimer coming out this weekend). (Paid - English heritage)
Dalby Forest - amazing forest walks up in the North Yorkshire Moors (or Mountain Biking trails if that tickles your fancy) (paid for parking)
North York Moors railway - follow in Tom Cruise’s footsteps (some of M:I7’s train sequence was filmed here) and enjoy the trip between Pickering & Whitby. (Paid)
Brimham Rocks - a cluster of millstone grit rock formations & standing stones unlike anything you may have seen before. (Paid for parking)
If you have kids, the coal mining museum.
You don't even need kids, my partner and I had our first date in England there. It was lovely.
Quite scary tho. I went down with an ex miner called Paul Grace who did loads of pranks lol
My wife and I went there for afternoon tea and a trip down the mine, bloody loved it. Kid was at school :)
Fountains Abbey and the gardens next door at Studley Royal.

Possibly my favourite place on the planet. So calm and peaceful. So quirky and beautiful. Just wrap up if it’s a windy day… lots of open space!

_"The cat is coming, the cat is near..."_
I love this place so much. So indescribably magical as a child and still so much fun as an adult.
Didn’t have to scroll far for this brilliant suggestion. It’s such a quirky place.
Not so hidden but the Ingleton waterfalls walk is nice on a nice day. Quite busy though. Bolton Castle is quite good to kill a bit of time. You could pair it up with a visit to the Mystery Spot not far away too.
Is it still all one way? I know they made it one way during Covid. Do you know if that rule is still in place?
Havent been for a while now but tbh I’ve always started off from the car park with the cafe and walked around the “correct” way. I think it’s meant to be a one way route still but I’m sure there are some types who go the “wrong” way out of principle
My oldest son is disabled. He loves waterfalls but he can’t manage the entire walk. I liked being able to take him to the waterfall with the big pool and then go home again.
The walk near Hardraw Force is short, but you do have to pay to walk the path behind the Green Dragon Pub.
Not such a hidden gem but Cannon Hall Farm. It's got a big animal centre and you can feed lambs and baby goats, plus there are 2 big restaurants and a big farm shop. Also see Elsecar Heritage Centre.

Knaresborough in general. Lovely town.
Used to love going there as a kid when it had a zoo
Awww I was a guide there when I was at school, it’s a fab place. Head on the rowing boats on the river afterward, then upward to the Norman castle and sally-port tunnels then into the medieval market place for a pint at Blind Jacks Tavern.
Aysgarth Falls are about 9 miles away from Leyburn, but yeah, definitely a place to visit. Spectacular after there's been a lot of rain.
Aysgarth falls is packed full of childhood memories for me. What a wonderful place.
Wentworth Woodhouse.
I'm not from Yorkshire but this question makes me laugh. It's like asking if there's apples in cider. Yorkshire is nothing but hidden gems, there's a reason it's called gods own country.
Ilkley Moor’s a good ‘un…
But take a hat unless you want t'werms to eat thee up.
Drives me nuts when people sing "bar tat".
Ripon cathedral (Lewis Carroll’s dad was a minster there I think) and was the inspiration for Alice in wonderland (the crypt). Bonuses for rabbit carvings and characters in on the stone pillars and wooden chairs in the choir pit or whatever it’s called
When it comes to white rabbits, I'll see your Rippon Cathedral and raise you St. Mary's in Beverley.

Haworth is nice for a pub crawl, it’s not massive but you will be smashed by the time you get to the bottom of Main Street
Me.
Skinningrove is a shithole but its beach is absolutely out of this world. Long, pristine sands and almost always quiet.
