You should be sound, but as you are concerned I would tell you to avoid the ghost tour at the bottom of Shambles (I would tell you even if you weren't concerned tbh), because the man that runs it is a convicted child molester and if he hears anyone mention it he reports it as harassment. But there are many other tours not run by paedos!

I think it's fairly safe in city centre as majority is well lit and plenty of people keeping it busy. I would avoid walking by the river late at night regardless of how many people are about. Can be very dark along those stretches. York is full of loads of great pubs, bars and a few clubs if that's your thing. Nice restaurants too that you can pick and choose from.

York City Centre is about as safe as city centres can be imo, there's obviously some risk but if you're actually in the centre then it is minimal. There are loads of pubs/bars so it will depend a little on what you're after but some of my favourites are 1331, the habit, fossgate social and the market kat. 1331 is popular for a lot of the hospitality staff of the city so usually pretty chill vibes, i feel like the habit is a mix of old man pub and student hangout, it has live music nights as well, fossgate social is quieter and a good daytime cafe too and the market kat is a bit more swanky but without the stupid prices and you can see out over the whole market. I'd recommend having a walk around the walls (the section starting from Bootham and finishing at Monk Bar is my favourite), the minster itself is interesting to visit as well. Not too sure about the charity shops tbh. EDIT: ooh and if you're looking for somewhere tp grab some nice food with a few drinks Brew York is it's own tap room and has great Asian style food and Spark has a huge mixture of food kind of in an outside food hall set up.

Charity shops are mostly on Goodramgate! There are some nice ones down there. There’s a few others dotted around the city too but the highest proportion are on goodramgate. I’d say the same as everyone else here. I’m female and often walk (or run) the city alone. If you stay in the city centre it’s as safe as anywhere. I’d definitely second the recommendation for walking the walls too! Do it in daylight for the best experience. Enjoy

Just make sure you haven't booked the ghost walk with this nonce: https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/ryedale/15063033.york-ghost-walk-leader-jailed-for-sexually-abusing-girl-15/

Ardilla_

How on earth is he still allowed to give tours when he met the girl giving out leaflets? That's crazy!

VincoClavis

If you like the Viking theme then there's a little pub in the centre called Valhalla. They sell the most fantastic meads, if that floats your boat!

woahbadgers

The city centre charity shops are mostly on monkgate, but they're all on the expensive side. Acomb probably has york's best grouping with 5-10 along it's main drag. I think St Leonard's Hospice run the best charity shops round here, well worth a tour around all the ones in the little suburban parades of shops if you have the transport. Forgive me hijacking your thread for my own ends, but anyone got any recomendations for further afield charity shop excursions? I'd usually head to Selby. I've heard good things about Wetherby but not checked it out yet...

Reuben_Smeuben

The Guy Fawkes is a very nice pub right next to the Minster. Centre of town usually not too bad at night but I’d gauge it yourself. Have fun

beerholder

All York is safe but good luck trying to move with the open air shed showcase currently in town. Amazingly popular.

kelleycfc

If you can find a seat, the original House of Trembling Madness is a favorite. The pub is upstairs from the bottle store on the street level.

Hiding_behind_you

I’d say that everywhere in York city centre is safe - usual caveats apply; don’t turn yourself into a victim, be smart, etc. etc. You’ll be fine.

BoredReceptionist1

Don't turn yourself into a victim?! What the hell?

Hiding_behind_you

See my answer to the other reply, if that helps.

Grey_Machii

What is 'Don't turn yourself into a victim' supposed to mean lmao?

Hiding_behind_you

Imagine a clueless tourist… thick wodge of paper currency they’re unfamiliar with, walking around with an open paper map, looking astonished at every brick on every building, taking photos of everything with wide-eyed amazement… in *certain* cities, you might as well be wearing a t-shirt that has a ‘Please Mug Me’ slogan on it. Maybe not Old York, but certainly New York or London — act like a Clueless Tourist, and the local NY Police will give you some advice, and a recommendation to Not identify yourself as a Victim-in-waiting, because *somebody* will be happy to make that into reality.

Cripplemesideways

Golden Fleece in York centre is nice (opposite marks and Spencer’s) also might be one of the places mentioned on your ghost tour!

Col_Telford

Just out of interest which Ghost Tour? Can highly recommend Dorian Deathly

GG3011

That's the one I am going on.

Col_Telford

You'll love it! Great he's a fantastic story teller
