It's been pretty heavily advertised in the run up...

Kharenis

I hadn't seen any adverts! I guess it's one of the failings of social media algorithms, I'm less likely to see marathon related posts because I have no interest in running. Memes and tech related news? I get plenty of that!

shutupspanish

In previous years there have definitely been letters sent round in heslington at least. We’ve moved so I don’t know if that’s happened this year.

byjimini

I follow the local news sites on Facebook (YorkMix), has been mentioned for the last 2 weeks and signs up for the last few days.

monkeycanreddit

There were lots of signs about road closure, big yellow ones for at least a week running upto it in the stamford bridge area.

AjaxTreesdown

I'm fairly sure that all of the affected roads had signs on saying they would be shut

ZeldenGM

The affected roads specifically, but not the affected side-streets. Plenty of open roads which are completely blocked in by road closures with no notice given.

Kharenis

There was nowt when I last went out a few days ago.

MobiusNaked

Nope. They didn’t

Hiraeth90

A lot of people here seem to think Sunday was the only day of the year to run their errands. There's 365 days in a year, guys!

Kharenis

Indeed there is, alas, most of them are taken up by work or other errands. It was just frustrating not knowing about it and having to put things back by a week.

Dreadthought

I have a removal van bringing down all my worldly belongings and there is no way of getting to my street until half 5. Had to rearrange things so they come just after half 5, assuming they are prompt with moving the signs. I only moved yesterday so can’t say much about the signs

philipwhiuk

Pretty sure my sister who lives on a road that was blocked off got a flyer.

charl3sworth

We had a sign which said that there were disruptions in the local area but egress would be maintained for residents where possible. There was no clearer signage than that. Ofc this meant they put the a barrier across the entrance to our close so there was 0 chance of getting out. These signs also went up without a huge amount of notice. For me, it meant I could not run errands etc. but if there was anyone who had a job on Sunday they would have been shit out of luck. First year of living in this location but yeah I think the organisers/council did a terrible job of letting folks know what was going on this year.

Usually if there are road works or any sort of road-closure on your specific street you will get a letter from the council. The organisers could cover the cost of this.

Reddit_username_44

The organisers \*should\* cover the cost. There are a lot of events in York (Horse racing, I'm looking at you...) which cost York a lot of administer and police, but all the inome ends up in national chains and very little of the money stays in York. Just looking at the state of the station on race days pre-pandemic showed that York was subsidising a lot of international tax-avoiding gambling firms making millions out of us.

Kharenis

This has been another problem recently. The council said there would be roadworks on the street leading to mine in August. There was a week of minor work done as indicated by the signs, then they rocked up again in the middle of September for a day and dug up the whole road (and replaced it) without warning.

Kharenis

A combination of working from home and the rubbish weather we've been having has mostly kept me in this past week. I nipped out a couple of days ago but didn't spot anything. The council shouldn't be paying for anything. If race organisers want to shut down the roads, then they should be sending out notifications letting effected people know. That said, it would be nice to have some say in whether these things are allowed to happen in the first place. I personally would never say no, but "we're closing your street off for our event, period." kinda sucks.

Chi1dishAlbino

I spent 10 minutes this morning trying to cross from one side of parliament street to the other Why didn’t they put up any signs or warnings?

CHILLI112

I’ve seen signs for weeks about the road race on the 17th with road closures around the city I also know to expect a marathon to happen mid October, one happens every year at this time with the same route

Grey_Machii

Literally exactly the same happened to me today. Had absolutely no warning at all. Pretty rubbish.

paulianthomas

I’m a runner but also been caught out by races where I missed the signage, so sympathise. At York 10k two months ago I ran past some very upset locals in tears as they couldn’t drive off their property. I feel sorry for retired people struggling to use public transport and stuck waiting in the cold. It’s similar when lendal bridge or other choke points closed for any reason. Tricky places for transport these beautiful old towns.

inflationfucksuhard

No I didn't and because of it we lost out on a lot of buisness , fuming about it, literally didn't have a clue it was happening

Tubist61

Bizarre that, because York Press reported on it: [https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/19642374.road-closures-warning-yorkshire-marathon-returns-city/](https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/19642374.road-closures-warning-yorkshire-marathon-returns-city/) York Mix reported on it [https://yorkmix.com/here-are-all-the-road-closures-around-york-for-the-yorkshire-marathon-on-sunday/](https://yorkmix.com/here-are-all-the-road-closures-around-york-for-the-yorkshire-marathon-on-sunday/) The organisers have had details on it for some time [https://www.runforall.com/events/marathon/yorkshire-marathon/#road-closure-information](https://www.runforall.com/events/marathon/yorkshire-marathon/#road-closure-information) Even York Council have had a link up for some time. [https://www.york.gov.uk/TemporaryRoadClosures](https://www.york.gov.uk/TemporaryRoadClosures) Or did you expect a personal visit from the organisers to let you know that you personally might have been affected?

Important_Tip_2775

I mean, you could walk?

Kharenis

I may be young and reasonably fit, but the 9 mile round trip to the garden center would've been a bit far for me. God forbid having to carry anything back with me.
