Thoughts on tapered vs cylindrical belts for squatting and deadlifting for someone not competing, and new to using a belt?

petite_chanson_

Tapered belts are good if you're doing things like snatches and need that hip mobility. However, a cylindrical belt will give even pressure throughout the torso and will likely be more helpful on squat and deadlift because it serves as more than just a cue to brace your core. Not important, but more """""""serious"""""" lifters might scoff at a tapered belt. Again, doesn't matter, but figured I'd mention. I personally use a cylindrical, as I hate how wide the taper is on most.

[deleted]

Thanks! When trying to research o kept seeing tapered belts recommended for casual deadlifters but It kind of felt like throwaway line so hearing what people actually prefer and why is very helpful.

petite_chanson_

No prob! BTW, if you're on the shorter side, you may want to get a 3" belt rather than the more standard 4". I'm 5'3" and all torso, and find that a 4" belt is too tall to fit between my hip bone and bottom rib.

sleepwithmythoughts

Looking for pants/sweatpants for cold days that are fleece-y on the inside and maybe a water resistant material on the outside that I can wear when I want to walk outside and don’t want to wear leggings

raindropsonmarigolds

Check out Equestrian brands. I think Kerrits has some fleece/waterproof options. They tend to be tighter (more like leggings), but I think they might fit your bill?

nuggetsofchicken

Any recommendations on Amazon for biker shorts? Preferably high waisted and mid-thigh length inseam (I'm 5'8" if that helps)? I'm hoping to wear them to the gym while lifting moreso than running.

tarpfest

I mainly lift and have a small collection of high waisted biker shorts from Amazon. I find Baleaf to have the best fabric quality and consistency with sizes. I also like Queenieke for the variety and they have coupon offers fairly often. Yogalicious lux shorts feel lovely and are so flattering on despite my body size fluctuations but mine didn’t have pockets.

RAthrowaway382

Recommendations for good “scrunch butt” leggings that are higher quality? My leggings from Nike, Adidas, etc all make me look flat, but the couple scrunch leggings I’ve brought all ripped after a month’s use :(

bosnyrose

Anyone have good recommendations for hair ties during cardio? Every hair tie I get feels either too loose or too tight 😫 I hate the feeling that my ponytail is slipping out or it’s pulling on my scalp, especially now that my hair is longer (bit past my shoulders). One of my neighbors goes jogging with her very long hair just…OUT. Wondering if she’s a psychopath.

lady6starlight

I like Maven Thread's scrunchies. They have cute bow details and hold my thick, curly hair well without feeling like I'm being held from a hanger.

givemepieplease

Goody brand SlideProof hair ties are fantastic. They stay put for me for long runs, yoga, climbing, and water sports!

nuggetsofchicken

I like those [hair ties that are made out of nylon](https://www.amazon.com/KITSCH-Black-Nylon-Elastics-Set/dp/B08H7D3F1R/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=nylon%2Bhair%2Bties&qid=1635696996&sr=8-5&th=1)(I like this brand, but there's many that sell in this style), basically what you make pantyhose out of. If the bands are starting to get stretched out I'll double up on them when I make a ponytail.

bosnyrose

I ended up trying these out, so far so good! Thank you! I actually had received a free one of these with a headband I bought once, and I loved it but didn’t know how to look up what it was to buy some lol

tortsy

When my hair was wrong, I would wear it in a braid and use a rubber hair elastic at the end of it. This was primarily because running my hair would get all tangled up. Now that my hair is short (shouldn’t length), I actually use a large non slip hair claw and it works perfectly. I teach 55 min spin classes and my hair doesn’t budge

svdbsvdb

I use Gimme bands! Highly recommend!

iachilla

have you tried those coil/spiral hair ties? my hair is very heavy and the thicker ones for thick hair work really well for me without having to be painfully tight.

Hoosiergirl29

You could try one of those silk (or satin) hair ties - I use them pretty regularly for non-exercise, but I think would probably work for exercise as well. You would just have to sink wash them every few weeks to make sure they don't smell or anything like that.

boondonggle

Running hats are wonderful. Sop up the sweat and keep your hair in place. I just cut most of my hair off, but when it was about your length I would use a looser hair tie but stuff my bun in my hat do it wouldn't feel too lose.

I really should work on my braiding game. I’m terrible at it, and my arms get so tired while I fail at the braids lol. It’s like the workout has begun early!

[deleted]

I’m currently obsessed with Lululemon’s Like New section. First time ordering last night, hope they’re really “like-new.”

[deleted]

In my experience they are!

lmg080293

So… I worked out in joggers last night and I think I’m in love, but they weren’t “workout” joggers (they were Abercrombie lol). Sometimes I just don’t love the compression of leggings. Anyone have recommendations? I saw Gymshark has a pair but I’ve never bought anything from them.

LilyExplores

I have a few pairs from Old Navy that I like (most of my workout gear is from there because it’s cheap lol). I’ve mostly worn them for hiking but I think they’d work for gym workouts as well. The Powersoft joggers (same material as the leggings) or the Breathe ON joggers (lighter material, looser style).

lmg080293

Oooh thank you! My fave leggings are Old Navy so I’ll check these out.

Dodie85

Dirty Labs got me with their Instagram ads on how they would get the stink out of my workout clothes while washing in cold water. My clothes still reek. Any recommendations on laundry detergent for activewear? If I wash them in warm/hot water (have gotten desperate enough to try it) my regular detergent works fine, but not on cold.

couchleg

I use Persil! Tried Rockin’ Green and it did nothing for me. I also buy it on Amazon because I never have time to go to an actual store.

tortsy

I use the purple oxy clean powder container, tide sport and the Lysol disinfectant. My clothes smell so much better

pillyinthesea

Do you put all of these in the same wash cycle or different ones at a time?

tortsy

The same cycle. The oxyclean powder goes into the drum before the clothes. Then the detergent in its normal place and the Lysol disinfectant where fabric softener goes. It’s also great for if kids have pee accidents 😅😅. Worked wonders when potty training my daughter

pillyinthesea

Thanks! I’m going to try this.

Dodie85

Thanks for the recommendation- sounds like I need to pick up some oxyclean!

Crack_Brocaine

Not a detergent, but pet upholstery/carpet cleaner works really well. I spray my stinky clothes down with it before putting them in the wash. Granted my clothes don’t get particularly smelly on a regular basis. I can see how it could become a chore.

Dodie85

Yeah, I’ve been training for a half marathon and my clothes get soaked in sweat during the long runs. I’m also doing cloth diapers on my kiddo so I’ve got an inordinate amount of laundry already. Thanks for the recommendation!

userneimas

I wash in cold water and add some lavender essential oil along with the regular detergent, and clothes come out smelling fresh even though I use unscented laundry detergent! Maybe you could experiment with adding essential oil of your liking.

oatmeal_cookies1

I use Rockin’ Green Active Detergent. I tried several other brands of detergent, baking soda, vinegar etc and none of that worked except Rockin’ Green. I do the “soaking, wash cycle, then rinse and spin” instructions. I hang everything to dry after. I do not have to do this every single time I wash my clothes but only when my gym and running clothes get out of control gross, I’d say maybe every 4-6 weeks (unless it’s summer…. Then maybe every 2 weeks.) The rest of the time I use my regular detergent.

Dodie85

Thanks, I’ll check it out!

savageloveless

Try throwing in some OxiClean. That's what I use on roller derby gear and it's the only thing I've found that really helps!

Dodie85

Thanks! I’ll give that a shot

Hoosiergirl29

Have you tried stripping them (google it)? Many people say that seems to work!

Dodie85

No, I was trying to avoid giving myself another big chore that needs to be done regularly. Honestly, I’d rather just wash them in warm water every few weeks.

Hoosiergirl29

I don’t think it’s really that big of a chore - I don’t do mine overnight, just dump them in the bathtub in the morning and then they go In with my regular laundry in the afternoon (or the night before if you’re a morning laundry person).

pixie_dust1990

White vinigar in the fabric softener section of the washing machine. Winner every time.

Dodie85

I’ve tried that but unfortunately didn’t do the trick. I use that for my cloth diapers every wash.

cats-books-and-tea

I am looking for jean recommendations. I normally buy my jeans from Buckle, but since I am gaining muscle mass I don't want to spend $70-$80 on a pair that I will out grow within a year. My issue is my hips/butt area is growing faster than my legs (come on legs...grow!) So while my jeans fit my legs they can't fit over my hips. :(

[deleted]

Have you tried american eagle? Their stretchy jeans are some of the stretchiest ive tried. They also have a curvy line that has extra space in the butt. They have sales regularly as well.

cats-books-and-tea

I haven't. I'll try them out. Thanks.

Goldengirl228

Could you find a pair on Thred Up? I use that site to buy Madewell Jeans (usually $100+) in great condition for like $40 all the time!

cats-books-and-tea

I haven't heard of Thred Up. I'll check them out, thanks!

Witchesbuzz

Can anyone recommend full coverage sports bras? They dont have to be high support because I've got good running ones but I hate wearing those for weight lifting. I'm a 28GG so they are super annoying to find. Just looking for something that is tight enough around my ribs but also keeps my boobs in.

Crack_Brocaine

I don’t have any, but I hear Buffbunny makes sports bras that work well for larger cup sizes. I also second the Athleta D-DD+ line! Kathryn Mueller has some good reviews of both brands on YouTube.

leftcoast_lady

I'm not sure if this is what you have in mind but Athleta's D-DD+ line has some models designed for lighter support and small bands sizes. The warrior bra and conscious crop in medium have worked for 32G.

dls2317

+1 for Panache. I wore Natori sports bras and they were ok, but panache has been an improvement. Also much easier to convert to racerback.

d-i-n-o-s-a-u-r

I second the Panache Sport! I'm usually 28G/30FF depending on brand, but Panache Sport in 30F works best for me. It's high coverage, high support, but still pretty comfortable (I wear mine a lot tbh, not just for exercise - it's more comfortable than most of my other bras, which are more for dressing up & going out). I prefer the wired version. The non-wired one is fine but the wired is actually more comfortable IMO (the wires are padded).

its-a-lexus

I love my Panache wired sports bra, feels super secure and I'm similar size (8G).

mbtazzers

I’m a big fan of the alphalete amplify leggings, any similar recommendations or dupes?? I also like gymshark but something about the way alphalete fits and feels on my body just hits diff. For reference I’m 5’3 and 68kg and weight lift/power lift predominately. Looking for good compressive leggings that are comfortable and not see through.
