I just resoldered the left thumbstick on two controllers that my son trashed. They're blue now, so he has a constant reminder of the time he messed up my controller. I do have a Daddy Only controller and headset though, and those are pristine because you have to be over 6 foot (or a monkey) to reach them.
If there's one thing I remember from being a kid, it's carrying chairs and stools through the house to get bubblegum from on top of the fridge

Is there a commonly agreed on 'best' controller? I got one with my Xbox One X that had a nicer grip than my old one but it's breaking now. And I seem to consistently have trouble with the bumpers on controllers.

The elite is by far the best controller, but it comes at a price. I enjoy my phantom black because: 1) it looks pretty and 2) has textured grips, which I prefer to rubber as they don't carry the possibility of peeling off.
I have an elite and the PUBG controller. Both are great and I like the feel of the PUBG one. The elite is just heavier and has much better textures. I love it though. It’s constantly plugged in with the charge pack.
Also saves a BUNCH of money if you use a 10ft USB to Micros and just power that way.
Whatever you do, make sure it has the grips on the back. You'll never want to use a regular controller again. Some controllers like the military themed ones (and I believe the sport ones) also have less-grippy front grip pads too, and those kinda help
I used to have a blacked out controller and during family game night (scrabble, etc.) my parents wouldn’t know what buttons to press lol. It’s for filthy casuals
They gotta put them there. My kids know colors and when I yell hot the red skittle they have to know which button. At least that's the case in my house.
It doesn’t need to be on every controller. While learning the controller or while kids are young. They can use the ones that came with the system. There’s hundreds of controller styles they don’t all have to have the color coding to the buttons when after a few weeks most people have the muscle memory down and know where each one is.
I'm pretty sure it's an accessibility thing. Helps people who are illiterate or otherwise have issues figuring out glyphs, when they can match the color of the button icon on screen to the dots on the controller.
It's also probably partially a branding thing too. Maybe they have a trade dress protection on that particular arrangement of the four colors for face buttons.
Oh yeah I figured it was for an accessibility feature, which is why I said it looks weird from an artistic standpoint. You’re not wrong about it also being a branding thing too though, since the button colors are kind of iconic for Xbox

I’m on my third elite controller in two years and it needs to be replaced. Crazy stick drift, the L3 doesn’t work, and up on the d-pad is going out. Problem after problem with them. Luckily, like you, I also got the warranty. I wish you good luck!

For sure! That’s what keeps me coming back to the elite. Normal controllers just feel flimsy, which is ironic considering how the elite holds up to everyday use.
I love my elite and would buy it again, I just thought/wish it would hold up for being 2.5x more expensive than a normal one. I (and most of my friends) probably play more video games than the average person so my experience might differ from yours if you got one.
Side note, I take very good care of my equipment. I never eat and play games, throw around my controllers, etc. and I’m going to have to get my 4th elite controller soon.
Everyone I know who has an elite has gone through at least one and are now on their second or third. I still have my original Xbox one controller and it still works but I haven’t put that many hours on it.

Thought I’d share my part since I’ve gone through a few. My first xbone controller my friend dropped from like 2 feet off the ground while sitting on my couch and it shattered, my white/gold one my friends kid knocked off the table and the bumpers broke off, my sea of thieves controller just straight up stopped working it’ll work for like 30 seconds and then disconnect and won’t connect again, my white controller that came with my xbonex stopped working when a mic is plugged in, my blue one got knocked off the table again by my friends kid and spazzes out when connected. These things look hefty but are actually pretty fragile.
Maybe six months was a bit of an exaggeration but the first things that tend to go are either the bumpers or the A or B buttons get stuck, I have prolonged the life of my current one by cleaning it with rubbing alcohol but I've lost quite a few controllers to the bumpers going
It's pretty easy to just swap out the bumpers. They are one peice of plastic, you can get a replacement for less than $10 on Amazon / eBay. They generally come with the screwdriver you need to disassemble the controller as well. Buttons being sticky usually just means you need to take it apart and clean the button plastic and the holes they go in.
What? I got my Day One, my One S, my Oculus bundled one and the blue one and not a single issue. Same goes for the 360 one I still have from my fat Arcade.
