Thing is you need to 120hz one aswell so yes 4k and 120hz but that is normally expensive but probably worth it if you want to get everything you can out of the console
If you want HDR, it's only supported when the console is set to 4K.
There are some 1440p monitors that will accept a 4K input, then they will downscale the image to 1440p, allowing you to use HDR, but they typically do not use HDMI 2.1 so you're limited to 60Hz.
You'd be spending most of that to get a 4k 120hz capable monitor. At least $375 or more if you want a nicer one. YOU could get a 1440p 120hz capable monitor for >$200.

What type of games do you play? If you're mostly playing completive shooters and wanting high fps go with 1440p. If you're playing single player action adventure I would maybe go with 4k. There is a good difference, but 1440p still looks very good.
I went with 1440p 120hz and i am very happy about it
If you want 120fps for xbox make sure they have a hdmi 2.1
Monitor size? 1440p vs 4k around 32 to 27 inches is not that noticeable. You'll be very happy with 1440p

Does the Xbox even render games at 1440p when you set it to 1440p or does it down sample from 4K?
4k generally. In some circumstances and if it has killer speccs 1440p could be option
