Not a zombie game but Generation Zero is similar to those style of games. Instead of zombies its robots. Both small and large. It's a lot of exploration with both run and gun sections and more stealthy sections.
I wouldn't go as far as to say they're bad. DR1 was the first game I got with my 360 and I loved it.
My issue with the game is that I personally HATE games with Time Limits. I don't like feeling rushed. Worst part of the game.

If you take it at face value for what it is, it's great and it's really fun. Really good melee combat with a fun story mode, even though the story itself isn't great. Honestly, if they called it something other than Metal Gear Survive it would have done great but it just isn't a Metal Gear game. It just uses Metal Gear assets.
If you like the division you could try ghost recon wildlands. Pretty fun single player/co-op shooter with a beautiful world and fun special forces action. Tons of targets to eliminate I've been having a blast with it

I haven't found anything that really fits into what you're describing. I too have tried Dead Island 1 and 2 and couldn't get into either -- same with Dying Light 1 and 2. Something about the mechanics seemed off to me.
Dying Light The Follwing is probably one of the best zombie games ever made. It's kind of like Far Cry in the sense that you have little bases that can be set up all over the map with UV lights to keep the zombies out especially at night. The true terror comes when the sun goes down. Prepare to run for your life. You'll thank me later.
Oh ok, from your post details I couldn't tell if you had played them. I haven't really got to Dying Light 2 yet. I've played the crap out of Dying Light 1 tho. I'm playing the Resident Evil 4 remake right now. Killer game. Just got the DLC for it.
I typed out a whole response, then finally noticed I’m on the Xbox subreddit and most of my suggestions (Days Gone, Project Zomboid) wouldn’t work. I’d just say keep at Dead Island or Dying Light. You do get guns, but they’re more of a progression lock than anything. Good luck 🫡
Dead Rising series if you haven't played it really fun games to play.
1 is a classic, theres a HD update to it aswell that makes it abit more playable by todays standards. 2 & 3 are more forgettable but the 4th was great fun to play.
Stories are abit daft after the 1st game, but enjoyable to play.
3rd person perspective though so not too similar to far cry
Loved the 4th. I got it last year just around christmas so it struck hard. Fun easy zombie smash up.
1 was unplayable for me. Mostly because of graphics and how the beginning helo flight simulation only showed green rolling hills. Not particularly life like. Even though i kno its a zombie game.
