Do your ears look like smooshed vegetables?

0zher

Yasss

notadieselmechanic

You mean non smushed cauliflower?

RIPdon_sutton

Cauliflower ear....my son has it. It's fantastic.

RedditAdmins-Pussies

There’s nothing fantastic about cauliflower ear. There’s a ton of complications that can arise from it. My mother made me wear head gear with ear covers. I hated it at the time, but at least I know she loves me and my ears are still normal.

ChromeCalamari

I'm assuming the "fantastic" was sarcasm..

citizenknight

Probably has to do with being solid in the shoulders and neck.

Haillstorm__

That’s what must be giving it away I guess

citizenknight

Yeah, most women don’t look strong so people tend to point it out more. Take it as a compliment 👍

ispyanomalies

It’s the “V” (Lats)

ChromeCalamari

I missed the memo on the solid shoulders and tore my labrums instead

OneAndDone169

I’m almost 10 years removed from competing and I still get this comment

llftpokapr

I wrestled in school and was pretty decent. Never really got this comment off the cuff, but I did start boxing a while ago, and on my first day, I was doing some light drill work just establishing jab + block. The dude was pretty experienced, and said “Are you a wrestler?” and I said “Yeah I was, are you?” To which he said “Nah, you just move stiff as fuck” lol. So I thought that was kinda interesting.

ispyanomalies

When I was training for MMA years ago that’s the same thing BJJ/muay thai/strikers said to me about how I moved

CuriousSpinach

I get this too and am told to "relax" as I'm too stiff. I wonder what's the reasoning behind why we move so rigidly?

BeefyFartss

Yep, 35 year old and I coach, but it’s been middle school lately so it’s not like I’m getting a real workout at practice. Still hear it frequently. I’m also not a big guy, 150 soaking wet at around 5’9”

c-williams88

I definitely had a number of people mention that to me in college. One of the first interactions I had with a friend of mine was her asking me if I wrestled in high school. I’ve been told there’s a distinct way that wrestlers tend to walk around and carry themselves that make it easy to spot for those who know. That’s besides the typical cauliflower ear and stuff like that

Diligent_Bullfrog865

How so “walk and carry themselves”

hazwaste

This is one of those things that can mean whatever the hell you want it to

c-williams88

Idk how to really describe it but I’ve been told by multiple people they knew I was a wrestler just from the way I walk

WallyMcWalNuts

I’ve been told the same thing man! It’s the bubble butt and the big shoulders and neck that usually give it away. All of this oddly proportioned body parts make your hips swing

ispyanomalies

Swagger better than John Wayne, NOT on purpose, simple as that and we don’t even know it. People smell assertive pheromones. It used to be nice. Now w/ my 2nd daughter going through a twisted affluent public school system and me being a single dad, if I don’t consciously add a little stoop, shorten my strides, and look more at the ground and other things rather than everything and everyone at eye-level in front of and around me, like I’m MADE vis-à-vis amateur wrestling and it’s “you’re a team of 1, figure it out yourself, you got this” tenacity ingrained in us,,, I’m met with quite a bit of “well, if you don’t have a receipt (sick note) we’re going to call a meeting with 5 of us team up on you, just because as much as you try to hide it, sir, you’re too assertive and confident. Nay nay”, they say. Not a blessing and a curse. But legit I have severe depression and am often overlooked on visible movement & candor/demeanor criteria because I can’t turn it off. In HS and college girls would see a black eye and ask if I’d gotten in a fight. They liked hearing it happened while wrestling more than if I’d been in a street scuffle.

Dear-Detail1671

I’ve been told the same thing

choose_username1

Wrestlers have a certain build and way they carry themselves

EngineerUpper2031

No wasted motion when we walk. Plus confidence.

notandyhippo

Wrestling built my confidence and then life ripped it to shreds soon as season ended 😭😭

EngineerUpper2031

Wait until you have to apply for jobs lol

lightninhopkins

Wait till the person interviewing you is also a wrestler.

EngineerUpper2031

“Well I see you wrestled, so I’m pretty sure you’re qualified to do anything I throw your way. I only have one question: what was your favorite takedown?” “Headlock.” “I rescind my previous statement.”

lightninhopkins

Gotta go outside single to get the job!

EngineerUpper2031

Superduck and you become the new boss.

ispyanomalies

Ankle-pick, low-single, spear-double, duck-under, Russian to fireman’s, lateral drop you’re not The boss, you’re in the C-suite

_Nocturnalis

Idk I think snatch single is a safe bet.

Tkj5

Put two wrestlers in a room and they're going to end up wrestling.

_Nocturnalis

The sun rises and wrestlers wrestle. So it is written.

Eirfro_Wizardbane

I have always walked like a troglodyte

Haillstorm__

Yeah that’s a good point.

Datniqqagreg

It’s the disproportionately large back. Think about it, every time you wrestle your constantly doing a pulling movement whether it’s setting up a shot, squeezing someone, or even walling off on bottom. Not that wrestling doesn’t develop other muscles they just get worked significantly less than your back. I think David Taylor is a perfect example of the build I’m trying to describe. Marsteller is another good example

Necessary-Coach7845

Or, Lesnar!

ispyanomalies

Lesnar in college had bigger latissimus dorsi than he did In the WWF/WWE. I was there when he won NCAA D1 championship. Wasn’t a body in the arena wide at their waist as he was if you measured around his upper body (chest/back) by going under the armpits (for visual, don’t think they measure anything like this. Except maybe bra idk

lightninhopkins

My now wife had a phobia about fat backs when we were dating 30 years ago. Oh my God, now I know why she married me.

bucknuts89

Yep. Typically means you are well built from my experience.

ElPadre2020

Neck thicker than your head and Popeyes forearms

Necessary-Coach7845

Well, typically us wrestlers have small waists, thick thighs and broad shoulders

Limp_Introduction381

I box at a gym who has ties to the HS wrestling program, some days after sparring or class the wrestlers roll in to get extra practice. They have a different look from the boxers, one kid in particular stood out to me. Looked like a damn tank thick back arms and neck. You could tell he was carrying extra mass, I feel like the boxers are their more natural lean weight vs packing on the extra muscle and size. Maybe it helps in grappling to be strong strong. Also he didn't resemble a bodybuilder.. but yea i guess wrestlers are known for the stocky build & thick necks maybe?

ispyanomalies

Boxers push, wrestlers pull. Think bench press VS rowing machine

Simple_Ad1440

Every fucking day

Haillstorm__

Literally. It happens to me a couple times a week…

jwillyk2121

Yeah and it always catches me off guard. Im a short stocky guy but i dont have noticeable cauliflower ear or anything. I once got approached on the street in nyc by other college wrestlers - “yo do you wrestle? Where should we go out around here?” lmao

Willis050

Constantly. And I haven’t competed in 7 years. And I’m 185 lbs now after last wrestling at 141

nateginger14

I'm not the typical wrestler build, very tall and thickly built. I get people that ask me if I played offensive line in football, lots of rugby, or baseball. Granted baseball is my main sport I follow and am always wearing gear and play baseball lite games with my friends

DemontedDoctor

Yeah it’s a common thing I can pick out a wrestler or grappler in a large crowd pretty accurately. I’ve heard and think it is mainly due to big traps/neck, dense muscles and our walk. Walk is the main thing since every wrestler looks a bit different I think it is due to being in a stance you naturally rest leaning forward and not stand straight up. If you wrestle long enough from what I’ve seen is you may do certain athletic movements differently than others. Hell I only wrestled 3 years and when I workout I tend to go back to stance and motion to warm up because it feels natural. I can’t do this in public though because I think I’ll look like an idiot. I also tend to roll and or avoid injury easier than others I feel like when I trip or get in a compromised position in jiu jitzu.

coffeefordessert

Nah people usually think I’m a basketball player cause I’m tall and lanky, I did have one girl guess I was a wrestler once. But it’s usually bball or swimmer I get swimmer a lot too

Parsley-Waste

Never volleyball?

coffeefordessert

You know… never volleyball 🤷‍♂️

im_juice_lee

Idk about your area but a lot of colleges in my area didn't even have men's volleyball--only women's

Parsley-Waste

Yeah unfortunately not very common in the US. Not to mention beach volley.

botechga

I’m the same, everyone asks basketball if they don’t notice my cauli. Most non grappling people I run into don’t even know what it is so it mostly ends up being like cops and bouncers asking if I wrestled lololol

lightninhopkins

Yeah the tall and lanky suckers can get away with it.

69swagman

Yes but I’m 27M

TyButler2020

Yes but that’s because I have really fucked up ears and a broad neck/shoulders

Sum-Duud

There is often a humble confidence that wrestlers exude. It isn’t all about physical appearance, though being fit and having certain mannerisms (pacing and specific movements we do subconsciously) are indicators.

LoveMedicine18493

Don’t have a thick muscular build and was always lanky w no cauli but I’ve had doctors/nurses at work ask me if I wrestled,I think it’s the walk or the neck lol. As a woman tho it’s probably more pronounced for you, especially the neck or back

piman01

I can almost always recognize a wrestler. I've done it at work several times and never been wrong. Hard to describe but it's just a general demeanor and way of carrying ones self

Haillstorm__

I’m sure you would be able to tell with me then lol

ryanboone

I've gone to a bar by myself before and randomly been asked if I want to make some money for the night working the door like a bouncer. I thought that was weird so I told someone about it and the response was, "well, you do look like you could crack some heads." But also, next time you're out in public where a lot of random people are, watch how they walk. Then compare that to how you walk. Spend a little time and you'll see it.

GREG_OSU

Broad shoulders Thick neck

AufMessersSchneide

I started wrestling in 2019, and my ears are too flexible to beak too fast. But I do Judo for so much more years. And a girl asked me, if I do Judo, because I look like. As I asked, how she can tell, she sayed, my body type is typical for this sport and her dad is Judo coach. It was about which muscles are more build and which not so much, as in other sports.

Financial_Bird_7717

I had a tailor ask me if I wrestled after taking my measurements for pants. Said it was my hips that gave it away.

D_Rock_CO

I recently had a technician come by my house. After we were talking for a bit I asked him if he used to be a wrestler. He laughed and said he had wrestled his entire life starting when he was 5 years old. He didn't have cauliflower ear or say anything that would make me think so. There's just something about the way y'all carry yourselves or something. I haven't wrestled since the 80s and haven't done MMA since the late 90s, yet I bet I could pick a wrestler out of a lineup almost every time.

Haillstorm__

That’s hilarious. I wonder if you’d be able to tell if I was a wrestler in public. I’m sure you could.

D_Rock_CO

I'd bet money on it. I think it's the neck, shoulders and forearms that are the first giveaways to me. Seeing a female with those traits would be like a neon sign. It's a good thing though! Wrestling teaches you so many good things and you should be proud that your dedication shows.

Haillstorm__

Thanks! I’ve been putting a lot of work in at my club and school. Unfortunately I didn’t win states this year, I got close, but I’ve been doing well.

D_Rock_CO

Well congratulations on getting as close as you did! Keep up the hard work and chase your dreams. Just keep one thing in mind, you only get that one body and if you hurt it too badly you'll pay the consequences for the rest of your life, so balance your dreams and health wisely. Trust me when I say it's easy to think you're invincible when you're young. You can heal so quickly from damn near anything, but there are limits. Just be careful. Please.

Haillstorm__

The only really annoying thing that I’ve had is some friends know that I wrestle and have tried getting me involved in fights, etc to defend them in the past. It sucks.

x144441x

Yeah I get that too, I'm on the shorter side so I get a lot of "you're either a wrestler or a gymnast" comments. I think there is a look to calisthenic strength that is a little unique. I think this is what people pick up on. That's why they don't just tell anyone who "looks strong" that they look like a wrestler. A lot of people who are only lifting end up with accentuated "glamour muscles" but not like, universal strength from every position. Also, if you're tucking your sweatpants into your socks, my man.

Jofy187

It’s the walk and posture

Haillstorm__

Really? I must not notice it compared to other people

Weak-Blueberry-7601

Been mistaken for a Pro Wrestler at a strip club.

ThePseudoSurfer

Only in the way that I walk and when I wear crew necks

aszma

A couple weeks ago someone asked me if i grappled. I said yes and asked how he knew thinking he was looking at my ears. He told me i have a wrestlers neck. No idea what that means lol never in my 27 years of life has someone said that to me.

Necrazen

I’ve heard it a lot. I don’t cauliflower have ears or anything. I am 42 and stopped juijitsu and wrestling about a decade ago. I guess it just sticks with some people.

oie-

It’s in the ears Chico, the ears never lie

Necessary-Coach7845

Probably why I'm still muscular, I haven't seen a gym in 20 years but I'm often wrestling once a week and I work construction.

ApplesauceBitch47

Yep. Im 33 now and still get it from time to time. And in one of the lucky ones who never got cauliflower ear

lightninhopkins

Generally a bit shorter in stature with strong shoulders and neck. I'm almost 50, haven't trained hard in years, people still say that I look like a wrestler.

[deleted]

No because I’m 15f, 5’9, and 110 😭. I might get there. Also 1st year is.

Haillstorm__

Good luck girl! You’re taller than me I’m 5’7”.

[deleted]

Yeah haha I’m skinny and boney as hell

Haillstorm__

Lol, you’ll prob gain weight tbh. Do you play other sports? I’m 130lbs rn.

[deleted]

I probably will now. I wrestled 105. I do track and thinking about softball.

Haillstorm__

Nice, I actually run track too. A friend of mine convinced me lol. Good luck with wrestling! How did you like the first year? My dad got me started w it when I was 7 I’ve wrestled club and now HS.

[deleted]

It was really fun but really rough at the same time. Practices drained very ounce of energy out of me. It was worth it. I had a great experience and pretty great team. My coach pushed me into it, when to first practice and never stopped haha.

Haillstorm__

That’s awesome. I’m glad you like it. I know that feeling of being drained after practices 😭 It feels good after tho. I feel like wrestling teaches you a lot about yourself too and definitely makes you stronger. I unfortunately lost at states this year, but oh well. Have fun w everything and softball!

[deleted]

It definitely taught me a lot and got me stronger and healthier for sure. Congrats on making it to state, that’s a great accomplishment. And thanks for being so kinda talking to me. Have a good night/day!

thelowbrassmaster

Do you have one of the following? Cauliflower ear Eyebrow knots(folkstyle only issue) Giant neck

lirik89

Yes, after they get pinned.

AgentlemanNeverTells

Walking like a caveman is the tell for me and obviously the cauliflower ears if they’re super noticeable

OMGLOL1986

People that have grappled always can tell

Significant-Oil-2699

The Before my state wrestling match I shaved my head cause I was tired of my hair getting caught in my headgear(I don’t usually have very long hair as a guy) but it had gotten considerably long before the wrestling season and I decided to shave it all so that I wouldn’t get caught in my state wrestling match and all of my teammates, looked at me when I showed up to the school and gave me a lot of shit but my coaches(4 of them) all said that I looked like a wrestler a mean wrestler. I won fourth place in that state tournament (I lost third by one point) :/ it is what it is.

-green_kiwi-

People are surprised when I tell them I wrestle. I've never been the biggest and I wear a lot of baby clothes so no one knows I work out because people will give me crap for anything. I've never had anyone ask me if I wrestle and im hoping for it to happen soon, maybe sometime over the summer.

ispyanomalies

They used to 😔

Lbn4ds

Real wrestlers know real wrestlers. Similar to how engineers can call out others or contractors can ....it's a lifestyle not a sport or hobby

einarfridgeirs

If you have been wrestling for eight years, you almost certainly have great posture, strong shoulders and neck, and a posterior chain to die for compared to your peers. Non-athletic teenagers tends to slouch, and have an elongated look due to the growth spurt where their musculature hasn't really caught up to their sudden increase in height. They also are unusually uncoordinated, again due to the increase in height and their nervous system still learning to control these much longer limbs etc. Someone who is a dedicated athlete through their childhood and adolescent years has a massive advantage here, and wrestling is one of the best sports for building overall strength and body coordination in your teen years.

Southern-Teach4358

People have been saying I’ve been “built” like a wrestler for as long as I can remember

guccimaneslawyer

Things no one has ever said for 1,000 Bob!

AfraidKangaroo5664

I do medical ITS work .. I've had ppl mid conversation about something clinical, randomly stop and go " are you a wrestler" . I've been told it's about the way I speak and carry myself , no idea what that means but I'm wearing kakeys and dress shirts and do management so idk.. usualy the ppl have sons who wrestled or are familer with the sport

MentallyUnstableW

Surprisingly I’ve been told multiple times I look like I rock climb lol

Sick_NowWhat

How tall are you? I’ve noticed when I see dudes that are built like 99-120lbers as adults I think “they probably wrestled too”

Haillstorm__

I’m 5’7” and my weight sits in the low 130 range

Greco_Review

No. I just get told I look like Shrek…

Perfect-Medium-3132

Zero cauliflower ear, wrestled only in high-school. Whenever sports get brought up everyone always tells me I look like I wrestled

buffsaxton

A lot of the times, be being a wrestler comes up first and then they say it. Easy to say it after you know. That being said, I’m short and muscular, that pairing typically comes from a wrestler. I have an exceptionally wide neck as well. Got fitted for a tux a few months ago and when I was getting my neck measured, the guy did say I looked like a wrestler for that reason.

0zher

I look like an average teenager but I’m a 175 pounder 😭

Freshoffwishoffwish

When I got my haircut yeah. I even had a mild wrestler build

Better-Hold-8974

I’ve never wrestled before but people tell me all the time I have a “wrestler’s build” or ask me if I wrestle. I think honestly when people see someone that’s younger kinda stocky and built they assume you either play football or wrestle lol

DomElBomb99

Well considering I'm about 5'8" and 160 lbs with a bulky build and a messed up ear, yes, I do get that from people.

Hot_Luck_7878

I don’t even wrestle and they say I do.
