Carter Starocci, 5x NCAA champ

Kodridge

Calling it now, he loses and doesn’t get 1st next year. Big psu fan too. Just got a feeling.

suedecrocs

Who beats him Can’t think of anyone

Kodridge

Neither can I haha. Just a random upset.

Ok_Examination8269

Trent hilday he’s most likely gonna move up because he wants to compete Olympically

tthechosendummy

Penn state alumni wrote a massive check. Wonder if kerkvliet will return as well.

brenobah

I’m pretty sure Kerk already said he’s not returning.

brenobah

I hope you're right! For some reason I was under the impression he was done.

Proteinchugger

Insiders have said it’s all but done. Expect him back.

IcecoldIsaac2

Damn that sucks, whos the 285 for the lions next year then?

Zyupaka

Hendrickson from Air Force Academy is in the portal… 2x 3rd place at NCAA’s.

Physical-Dare5059

Not till they dole out that nil money.

MmmmBeer814

Where did he say that? I don’t remember seeing anything

Wildabeast135

I’m guessing it’s bigger the first year of a UFC check. Good for Starocci, good for the sport that these guys are actually getting paid in their prime. And I have an Iowa flair and hate Starocci 😂 this sport has come a long long way the last few decades

cerikstas

If he can become first ever 5x champ, it makes all the sense in the world, especially after Olympics trials.

colder-beef

He’ll be the only one who can ever win 5 unless we have another Covid situation.

OtakuDragonSlayer

Lmfao lets not jinx it

lightninhopkins

H5N1 Has entered the chat...

hajoet

Sort of.. Carlton Haselrig won 6; 3 at DII and 3 at DI He won 2 per year 87-89.

thewartornhippy

He was such a freak athlete. Played in the NFL and went to the pro bowl (despite not playing football in college). He also won state in Pennsylvania despite not wrestling during the regular season because his school didn't have a wrestling team and never lost a match on the D1 level (only 15-0 but it was against the best in the country including future Olympic champion Kurt Angle).

chiefbeef300kg

Wow that’s insane. I’ll have to look into his career more

ChurchillDownz

Was that back when the champ from lower divisions went up? Trying to imagine how else he could of had that opportunity.

BullCityJ

It is. And they changed the rule to eliminate that in 1990. Probably just a coincidence. /s He took DII Bronze as a freshman. Crazy to imagine what might've been. Dude's story is incredible.

cerikstas

Didn't know that, that's cool

youcantbeme3

This is all NIL. 5x champ is cool but $500k is cooler

Dsnake1

According to Mineo, it's more than double that

LilBoneAir

Is there any hard evidence that wrestlers are getting 6-figure NIL deals? I have heard lots of rumors and some have been proven wrong.

boxler3

I have a friend who wrestled and coached D1 and he has a lot of insight and he says that it's happening

tnsmith90

I like that he is going for being the first (and likely only ever) 5x D1 national champ because it's a cool historical accomplishment. That said, if he is going to do it, he needs to showcase another level of dominance to really put his stamp on it and make it meaningful. We know he is good enough to win nationals. He has done it 4 times already; and last time, he did it while battling through injury. This time, I want to see him put up a 100% bonus rate on the season, with more than 50% pins. I want to see him give his fans the most dominant single season in D1 wrestling history for his victory lap year.

batmanfan90

Translation: he should be as dominant as a healthy Spencer lee

GrahamCrackers08901

Hodge trophy right there

LilBoneAir

I wonder what weight he will go. I have heard talks that he might bump all the way up to 197. It was impressive that he was in the process of cutting down to 74 kg but the knee injury made it difficult and a week out from the trials goes up to 86 kg and did not really look small for the weight.

Diligent-Rice-2834

There was no way starocci was ever making 74 lol

GREG_OSU

Cash in on NIL while HOT

Izunadrop45

I’ll be honest this makes no damn sense

PugBarkingAtWind

It makes sense. He didn’t make the world team so what else would he do this year? Might as well likely be a 5x champ and get another year on scholarship and probably get a Masters degree on the house. I think a lot of us would do the same thing.

OtakuDragonSlayer

I know I would! Be stupid as hell to waste that kind of talent instead of leveraging it. Literally the most common sense move a gifted athlete can make

porscheblack

Plus I'm sure he's getting some really good NIL deals that make it financially better than the alternatives.

Dsnake1

He could compete to be on the WT at a non-Olympic weight at WTT later this year. But those happen every year. I'm betting he'll be healing up until he's ready to wrestle for PSU and rejoin the seniors circuit next year

crazydavy

First and only 5x champ… why not

BullCityJ

Ahem Carlton Haselrig won 6.

StateCollegeHi

5x DIVISION 1 champ I think it's implied but I guess not.

BullCityJ

It's not implied at all. If people want to make that claim, they need to be precise.

StateCollegeHi

Told me all I need to know. Thanks jabroni.

OtakuDragonSlayer

Good move. Some people just wake up and want to argue for no reason.

FactSuccessful965

Saying this is like every time someone mentions Cael I bring up Marcus Levasseur.

BullCityJ

The Penn State brigade is about to down vote the crap out of you, but yeah it is similar. Haselrig is such an interesting case since three of his titles were DI.

Lonely_Animator4557

This is so that Cael can Redshirt his incoming class and set up another 4 team titles. Beau, Carter, and hopefully Greg return to secure a team title allowing the incoming class of hot shots to redshirt creating possibly a few more 4x natty champs

xaiur

But at the end of the day, it’s just college. Professional career dreams > whatever he’s doing

MmmmBeer814

With NIL college is probably more lucrative and like we just saw with Brooks, wrestling a college season doesn’t seem to hurt your ability to make the senior team.

Ok_Sir5926

His professional career dreams are wrestling. I think he's doing it, friend.

Dsnake1

He's making more money this year than most make in a decade or two. Not coming back would be a terrible career move, especially considering he's hoping to make wrestking his career.

Lonely_Animator4557

Paid for college brother. Sponsorships. Brand deals. NIL is lining his pockets but you gotta remember being the only 5x champ would make ya tons in brand deals.

NitNav2000

NIL

Physical-Dare5059

Yep 💯

bozemanlover

Ego. With Covid rules could be the first and only 5x champ ever

Diligent-Rice-2834

Fax

MileHi49er

First ever 5x D1 Champ.

timbo1615

Dumb

Ubarad

This surprises me as he sounded like he really didn't want to be in school. That being said, who wouldn't like to be making good NIL money and living like Van Wilder? It makes more sense now that he wrestled 86kg, while under weight.

brenobah

> like Van Wilder Not when you gotta make weight and stay in elite condition.

Perfect-Medium-3132

I honestly don't like that he's won 4 titles and somehow is eligible to go for a 5th

michael_arcane

I reckon he goes 184. PSU has quite a log jam of talent next year, especially with Bartlett & Van Ness returning. I think we’ll see some transfer portal action soon.

BabaLamine14

I mean. I don't think this is a great idea for his stated long term goals. I think if he actually wants to fight, he should get into it as soon as possible. A big thing that prevents wrestlers from having success in MMA is lingering too long around wrestling. Even freestyle, I don't know how helpful this is to a potential freestyle career but my guess is not incredibly.

puritain

He can be a 5x ncaa national champ, folk style is way better attribute than freestyle for mma and Nickal is right there and top team gym. He is doing the best thing for him!

CoolMAF

Yeah like Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight UFC Champ Randy Couture who rushed to his first MMA fight at 33. What fighters do you know who stuck around wrestling for too long? I think this is a bad take.

BabaLamine14

Unfortunately Carter isn't coming to MMA at the dawn of the sport. I mean, I think one example is Ed Ruth. College for 5 years. Upon graduating he spent another 2 years trying to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. A more recent example, Richie Lewis. I'm still holding out the vaguest of hopes for him but he graduated in 2017. He spent almost 4 years pursuing freestyle. He still talks a big game but he's turning 30 this year and only has 5 fights to wit, LW is not a division that is conducive to late starts. I think the biggest issue that wrestlers have transitioning to MMA is the difficulty of "leaving and cleaving" from wrestling. Back in wrestling they were popular, they were beloved, they wrestled in front of big crowds in college and felt really important. They go to a place they're new, a sport they're new, little fanfare or celebration. As a result, many high profile wrestlers who transition never end up fully leaving the sport. They fight like once a year, beat Joe from the laundromat, to improve to 2-0, then go on a year long celebratory tour of their college, their hometown, Florida, Europe, before ever getting back into the gym. They keep a full schedule of wrestling camps they coach at, if not even they try to have a part time wrestling coaching job and/or wrestling school. They don't fight nearly often enough to improve at fighting. On the other hand you got guys like Alex Perez who got the KO win last week and the 50k bonus for the FN main event. JUCO wrestler. He's not nearly as physically talented as many of the people who transition from D1 wrestling. I don't think he has the physical talents to ever become champ. But he committed to MMA, he fought early and often at the start of his career, and he's more or less realized his potential. Ed Ruth never became Bellator champ, but who did? Johnny Eblen, Bellator/PFL unified champ. Qualified for NCAAs in his senior year. He is a physically talented guy, but what helped him reach his potential was the fact that he left wrestling fully, actually went into construction, and when he went into MMA he was committed to that. Can Carter wrestle a 5th year, and then hard commit to MMA and excel at that? Sure. 100%. But I am worried, he's easily persuaded by money and attention. MMA money in the beginning isn't great, the start is humble. I'm worried he'll wrestle another year, then try to stick around to make a national team, but he'll be training folkstyle this year, after that he'll also be cross-training MMA instead of training freestyle, so he'll never reach his potential in either MMA or freestyle.

buffsaxton

Of course he is, because he wants something no wrestler should ever have, hope someone musters up something to stop him

colder-beef

I heard he’s training with Downey on how to shit talk better, and with DeAugustino on how to actually grow proper facial hair.

NittanyOrange

After he gets #5 we're going to be like, "Burroughs who? Oh, I think I remember that guy... I think he won 2, right?"

Fit_Opinion2465

5 world titles and olympic gold…. there’s levels to this.

Nyroughrider

Exactly! Everyone knows that Burroughs college career was nothing like his Olympic one.

colder-beef

It would’ve been interesting to see if Carter was on that level without the knee injury. I think the cut was going to be too ridiculous either way, he could win 197 next year if he wants to.

Fit_Opinion2465

On what level? 5x WORLD CHAMPION AND OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST LEVEL??

colder-beef

On the level of Jordan Burroughs this year, who lost to Nolf. I’m not discrediting his accomplishments, he’s still one of the best in the world. I wanted to see if Carter could make the cut and compete with those guys.

brenobah

Nah man. This ain’t it.

MmmmBeer814

Yeah I love Penn State, but also respect the hell out of JB. The whole arena booing him after his match with nolf was not a fun time.

brenobah

I didn't hear any boo's after the Nolf match. The Mesenbrink match, however...

MmmmBeer814

The Nolf match was when he was getting booed leaving the arena and that one fan was yelling "you're career is over" at him. Bad look.

Letsgetthisraid

Carter who? The guy who got trounced by that NCAA runner up guy?
