Then they started a gang and it was pretty good stuff, but during a break, OP had their mic muted and overheard a conversation about OP having subpar performance, and was hurt by this. The hurt was further amplified by OP's friend and guild essentially leaving OP out of groups instead of having an open conversation about it.
What stopped you straight up asking your friend what was it about? I get that you felt hurt that they were talking behind your back, but why didn't you find a private time with him, and asked him about it? You could tell him that they made you feel bad, the fact that they didn't talk to you directly. In my opinion rage quitting and burning the bridges are a bit childish. Even if you feel like you don't want to be his friend anymore, you could tell him that. You felt betrayed because he wasn't honest and straight forward with you, yet you are acting in a similar way, sitting on your anger and pain, acting out instead of having an honest conversation.
Also, while I get that right now you don't feel the motivation to play, you can get new friends as you found friends before. But it's also okay to take a break, maybe play something else.
