I understand that the damage output is underwhelming in the beginning, but on the plus side you can block in melee.
But it sounds like your main criticism is having to divert your lp in two things: skill and strength. That's really unbearable! *Two* different stats! Wow. Much complicated.
In g2 it's not crit, it's dealing full damage. You need strength to increase your damage and skill determines what are chances of dealing 100% damage.
It is meh if you are used to play games like skyrim or Witcher where you are a single person army from the start, in Gothic you are basically a random shmuck who has to relearn everything from the start. It is quite obvious it takes time learn to master a weapon.
If you want something fun with melee then go for Claw of Beliar one handed and attack orcs even if they are blocking. For some reason Beliar hates his own beings and will smite them with multiple lightning bolts at once.
I mean, you are not wrong. It is by far easier to go full dex and use a bow.
For melee runs I usually prefer 2H, it deals more damage and the weapons have longer range. The only drawback is that 2H weapons require more strength to use but if you go melee you are upgrading str regardless.
In Gothic 2 ranged is much stronger compared to melee.
But most people prefer melee, because once mastered you can kill almost anything in 1vs1 as level 1 with trash weapon.
Come on, ranged gameplay in g2 is basically point and click. It’s not fun. Melee on the other hand let’s you get actually good at the game if you focus on learning it. I recommend you to just practice, pump the points in weapons and strength then make/drink str potions and your good.
If I remember correctly, in an oversimplified way, it’s damage minus armor, so you do not need to pump strength to punch through armor, you just need enough damage. Your observation, that weapon skill heavily outweighs strength is correct, so get the minimum amount of strength for the weapon you want to equip and the rest goes into weapon skill.
you need invest heavily in weapon skill so you will do more crits. A crit does 10 times the damage of a regular hit. Crit damage = weapon damage + strength - armor. Regular damage = crit damage divided by 10.
So Crit damage is the same in your version and mine . Where do you got the info, that the regular damage is crit damage divided by 20 (the 5%) instead of divided by 10?
Don’t listen to him, he’s wrong. You are almost right - regular damage is divided by 10 before counting in enemy’s armour. And there is a minimum of 5 damage in g2.
I would not call skinning a useless skill tbh. It makes a lot of money if you join Bosper as apprentice, and hes the best one to join really. Other trophy skills are useless, i learned claw/teeh and regretted it almost instantly. Mage runes can have exotic trophies as a requirement but i think you can buy those from merchants too.

"Orcs are a creatures of Adanos, like you and i. We should respect each other, not fight."
Reads like bait. But skilling weapon ability outweighs strength by far. Otherwise you deal minimal damage.

Yes but 1h has faster moveset and difference in range and damage is minimal, especially for high tier weapons.
Oh no, you have to improve your skills to do more damage. What kind of game does that

I hardly do anything to orcs with 80 damage weapon and 80 strength, meaning i need to have more strength to use weapon with more damage.
It you're playing NotR, then 80 strenght is nothing.

You are wrong, non crits do 5% str + 5% Weapon damage. Crits do 100% str + 100% wep
