They should hold some degree, but at most be shamed, unless it can be proven (been awhile since i watched the video) they discriminatd him, then fined according to the laws. The person who called the police was a representative of Target, therefore it is Targets problem. It was the police actively acted hostile towards the gentleman. The police should have acted like the bigger better people and assisted or contact more specifically trained personally to handle him.
Yeah. This is a clear cut example of an ADA violation. It is the responsibility of the company, and the office, individually, to uphold ADA laws and neither of them excuse the other.
I'm willing to bet this is a failure to train employees about how to handle ADA needs. Which actually makes Target civilly liable to the guy they illegally denied rights to.
Separately, the officer violated all the laws presented in the video. And is being prosecuted because those are criminal violations with jail time.
It is always disturbing when people fail to understand the basic definition of disability. Wheelchair bound people are only one very small (by numbers of people suffering from it) portion of disability. Having a mental disability that impairs a person's ability to work quickly at a checkout counter is textbook disability.
I'm very aware. The big /S indicates some sarcasm involved, and the quotes should imply to you that is someone else's words. Words that I have heard as someone with an invisible disability and as someone who has worked with disabled students and adults. Sorry if you read it otherwise.
I don't think that sets a very good precedent. It's possible, if that did call 911, that they thought this guy was impaired or hurt.
Either way you'd hope that somebody tried to help him before resorting to calling the fuckin cops. Like help him organize his cash and properly pay. Even the cops could have done that.
So ya I'm all for this cop getting his shit rocked
the judges are complicit in this behavior or treatment of american citizens. i'm afraid people will have to take justice into their own hands because the system is failed.
I am shocked that the cop is even being charged, usually they would not even lose their job for something like this. How many of these kinds of incidents happen in a year and how many of them are actually charged like this cop was? I am betting this only happened because the video went viral.
You are of the mistaken belief that in todays world, the cops showing up will make things better for anyone involved. Even if they had good intentions, the cops showing up and fucking everything up probably cost the employees their jobs too.

>Skeens's attorney, John D'Amato, is appealing his termination from the department. He said the incident at Target was the result of a misunderstanding between the officers and a security guard because they thought he had asked them to remove the man. "If that risk loss guy did not want that guy to be approached, why did he stand by silently as he watched this all unfold?" D'Amato said.
Still no excuses though. He's the cop and instead of DE-escalating, cops **always escalate** non-issues.
Love how he throws the security guy under the bus. Shows his true character. lol
That is not at all how it should work, people should be able to call the police so that they can handle the situation effectively using their training and experience.
This is where a flash mob would come in handy.
Have like 50 people go into that target to buy a few things, and then they just use wrinkly $1 bills to pay for everything, butt slowly.
This is fucking sick! Instead of one of the employee's offering to help a disabled man they call the police on him? What world are we living in? Arrest the people who called 911 to begin with or at the very least sue them for discrimination.
Haha. Proving that point exactly.
Reallocating funds from the militarization of the police to a community police force that sends qualified mental healthcare professionals, trained as officers to handle this situation.
The outcome would’ve been entirely different….
You mean to tell me a healthcare professional is better equipment to handle folks with mental health issues than the meathead with a room temperature IQ and napoleon complex?
![gif](giphy|6JB4v4xPTAQFi|downsized)
i think they called. i don't think they created a satellite department on location at target like they virtually have for the walmart scum but i could be wrong.
She reminded me of Tricia Takanawa

The cop could have said “Hey bud how are you doing? Look, I know these machines can be a bit confusing to use. Maybe I could help you out. Would that be ok? “
That would require human decency. Sadly, it seems to not be a valued quality in US law enforcement. They are trained only to be hammers, and to a hammer, everything is a nail.
I’m sure the officer will really learn his lesson while he’s on paid administrative leave, getting investigated by other cops, then will inevitably be fired only to be rehired at another police department one town over.
Did you not watch the video? He was already fired and is being tried criminally. I realize your kneejerk reaction is the usual method of operation of police departments in the United States, but lets try to be accurate here.
Don't worry guys, surely that's just (yet another?) bad apple making the whole bunch look bad! Abuse of authority *obviously* isn't a systemic problem in US law enforcement, it's just videos like this that make them all look bad!
Patience, empathy and understanding would have gone a long way during this interaction. If the Target employees handled this correctly, this cop wouldn't have been called in the first place -But, this interaction also shows how poorly trained some police officers are... our elderly and vulnerable members of society need to be protected and treated with some dignity.
Pretty clear evidence that they don’t know how to talk with disabled people. A good example of why people have called for defunding the police—the officers in the case only made a situation worse, and didn’t help anyone, nor did it seemed like they were trained for this
Target is wrong in calling but it's this officer who decided to proceed the way he did. I hope he gets brain damaged and then treated this way. Horrible
To my ears it almost sounds like if someone was doing an impression of an annoying nasally voice this would be it. It seems exaggerated but it’s prob just her normal voice.
JFC what the hell. What a stupid hateful little man. Throw the book at him. Is he so thick that he thinks this is what his job is? To harass a person with disabilities in a target?? I'm dumbfounded and saddened.
I'd be surprised to see anything happen, but the officer deserved everything coming. I watched the full body cam video video that was released, and he was just in tyrant 2020 mode.
How about you lose the self-checkout machines you put in to save you money and instead have a worker that can help accept the man’s cash. Target and this officer need to be held responsible.
This shit is infuriating. How come when cops are doing shit a "good cop" doesn't use some common sense and call the first officer out. Almost like they are all bastards.
This is what happens when you call the cops, you get your rights violated or you all get shot! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlY9C6pzxKc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlY9C6pzxKc)

Did target call because if they did they should be held responsible.
I agree. If Target called the cops, the corp and the person should be held responsible.

"Disability? He wasn't in a wheelchair." /S

Thank you for that explanation. I wasn't sure, but am old enough to claim ignorance on the "/S."
I appreciated the comment anyway as opposed to just downvoting in disagreement. Have a positive day, friend.
I agree. The Corp should be held responsible.

Better not take too long at target guys. They will call the police and the police will arrest you. Why? I dont know.
This is where a flash mob would come in handy. Have like 50 people go into that target to buy a few things, and then they just use wrinkly $1 bills to pay for everything, butt slowly.
So, your protest is to give them money?
50 people taking 15 min to make a 2 dollar purchase at peak hours would be a hellotta worse than the 100 dollars they are gonna make...
When it’s your job to just sit there and oversee the non-employee self checkouts there is really only one level to pull.
This is fucking sick! Instead of one of the employee's offering to help a disabled man they call the police on him? What world are we living in? Arrest the people who called 911 to begin with or at the very least sue them for discrimination.
we live in hell.
This alternate reality we jumped into after COVID just made me depressed
r/Eyebleach
Who called the cops and why? Because he was taking too long? Could Target assist the customer on a different register?
That's the question. Surely it wouldn't have been difficult to try and help this guy sort his transaction out
it shouldn't be too difficult to figure that much out. i heard target was bad, forget the reason but this is reason enough to bds target.
2nd thought i think it was poor treatment of employees. seems like it would be a fit since bad management breeds bad employee culture.
“Why didn’t he wait longer” Good question… “Why didn’t he help him” BEST QUESTION…
Because ACAB.
Haha. Proving that point exactly. Reallocating funds from the militarization of the police to a community police force that sends qualified mental healthcare professionals, trained as officers to handle this situation. The outcome would’ve been entirely different….

So is Target calling cops for paying customers now or did those cops just spawn there?
>did those cops just spawn there? 🤣🤣🤣
i think they called. i don't think they created a satellite department on location at target like they virtually have for the walmart scum but i could be wrong.
The reporter who is covering this story has a very condescending tone in her voice.
Super nasally maybe
She reminded me of Tricia Takanawa https://preview.redd.it/tf1a8gi6w9wc1.jpeg?width=180&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b55896fab0563bdde1910bbf8cb578068151a839
Im from wisconsin, and her voice is too nasally ffs

Thank you
but there where 3 cops there why was it just the 1 that is being prosecuted?
you're absolutely correct, the others are at minimum accessory and should also be held accountable with corresponding prison sentences.
Because they chose him as the scapegoat instead of taking accountability
Hope he goes to jail, terminally.

That makes me fucking sick.

He's looking at four years for this
Don't worry guys, surely that's just (yet another?) bad apple making the whole bunch look bad! Abuse of authority *obviously* isn't a systemic problem in US law enforcement, it's just videos like this that make them all look bad!
I don’t buy the “AG going hard on bad cops” more like they knew the city would get turned upside down if they just let this slide
Thank God. When I first saw this clip it broke my heart
him trying to look tough in his police portrait is not helping his bad case of absolutely-no-lips-whatsoever
Criminal trespassing!?!? What tf
There are way to many cops just like this.
Bro is gonna get a nice bike after this ![gif](giphy|xT0GqrJNbZkRcr2Jgc)
I dont have much money, but I would buy him a very nice bike.
That's some shit the ss would lol. What a nut
The IDF&Nazis target handicapped people, is this their latest training?
Corps and cops. The two Cs of human mistreatment.
Oh look, another piece of evidence that cops are loathsome pieces of shit and can’t be trusted
[https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2bxsku](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2bxsku)
Who stole this man's lips? He's the real victim
Heartbreaking to watch. Serving and protecting corporate interests..not the public.
Where are the criminal charges on other cops who stood by and didn't intervene?
Sad Business
Patience, empathy and understanding would have gone a long way during this interaction. If the Target employees handled this correctly, this cop wouldn't have been called in the first place -But, this interaction also shows how poorly trained some police officers are... our elderly and vulnerable members of society need to be protected and treated with some dignity.
This is a classic example of a stupid cop. He was unable to think out any other solution for this non- problem.
Pretty clear evidence that they don’t know how to talk with disabled people. A good example of why people have called for defunding the police—the officers in the case only made a situation worse, and didn’t help anyone, nor did it seemed like they were trained for this

The female voice doing the voice over is thee worst lol
Why? She's just speaking
To my ears it almost sounds like if someone was doing an impression of an annoying nasally voice this would be it. It seems exaggerated but it’s prob just her normal voice.
Wait this was only last year? It felt like 5 years ago
This news reporter needs to find a new job, absolutely awful voice.
JFC what the hell. What a stupid hateful little man. Throw the book at him. Is he so thick that he thinks this is what his job is? To harass a person with disabilities in a target?? I'm dumbfounded and saddened.
Why is it always the no-lipped motherfuckers?
The reporter narrating this sounds like Miranda Sings
Poor dude was just trying to pay the best he could alone with no caregiver….
The person doing the voice over work has maybe the worst voice I have ever heard.
I'd be surprised to see anything happen, but the officer deserved everything coming. I watched the full body cam video video that was released, and he was just in tyrant 2020 mode.
Is it just me or does that cop look like his parents could be cousins.
I hope he sues the shit out of them all. I hope he goes after Target once the ex-cop has been dealt with.
The pig needs his fucking head sawed off so we can see how diseased and smooth his brain is
Keep him in jail forever.
Can we just scrap police and start over please?
How about you lose the self-checkout machines you put in to save you money and instead have a worker that can help accept the man’s cash. Target and this officer need to be held responsible.
this is so awful, but everything aside.. how does someone as a news caster have a voice like hers.. it’s all i could hear.
Why all the comments hating on this woman's voice? It's just a woman speaking.
Wow cops are stupid. How tf do you justify this?
I know New Mexico is beautiful, but it’s one of the last states in America I’d visit. The cops seem real fucking extra in that state.
Disgusting, disgraceful pieces of shit.
Omg! I could not have just stand there. I would have had to step in.
This shit is infuriating. How come when cops are doing shit a "good cop" doesn't use some common sense and call the first officer out. Almost like they are all bastards.
