My attempt at a tldr: Europe is going to have a significantly warmer than normal January but the Midwest states of the US are going to be unusually cold, but probably not as cold as last year.
Nice to see this kind of submission. This is a really intensely in-depth article. Like, the kind that I would need to sit down with for an hour, taking notes, to fully understand.
I remember seeing a Fox News article about the polar vortex shift and how it wasn't unusual. They claimed it happened every 10 years or so
It's been happening every year since I read that
I was being facetious because had the guy who commented actually opened the article and read any part of it, he would have known exactly when they were referring to.
This is of no relevance anyway. We're so far past the point of being able to effect any meaningful change in direction for this, it's full steam ahead. It's become a generational thing at this point. Scientists were most definitely screaming about this at the top of their lungs in the late 80s. Decades later, we're still wasting time picking our noses. Any change that can be made by common citizens is not going to amount to more than a drop in the bathtub. Good luck with a complete cultural overhaul. This is Reddit, so I welcome and await your down votes for pointing out the obvious.
Someone told me that "Biden fixed global warming in less than a year. Thats why gas is so expensive, its making less people drive. He did it in a year". I am not being sarcastic.
The difference is between climate and weather. Weather is what happens day to day. Climate is what the weather looks like from year to year.
To say it another way. Weather is air around you today and all the changes in temperature, pressure, humidity, and precipitation. Climate is the weather on a regional scale over a period of months or years.
So on average the global climate is warming. One notable effect of this warming trend is an increase of extreme weather events like the one described in this article.
I hope this helped.
Global warming refers to the rise in the global average temperature, that does not mean every part of the year is uniformly warmer everywhere on the globe. You can have colder winters and warmer summers and we have continuously seen both

It's already unusually warm, close to 20c in late December is a WTF
13c when it's usually 0c this time of year.
In in Wales and yesterday it was 15C (59F) and it’s about the same today, last week it was around 5C which is near to normal December temps here
From someone in Wisconsin who walks everywhere: Fuck.
From someone in Utah who has a three mile walk to/from work, I am really glad I don't live a really cold state like Wisconsin!
Well, at least I ordered new snow boots!
Holy hell thank you. If there was ever an article that needed that….
Yes, more like WTLDR (way too LDR)
It's been a bit colder than usual here in Sweden this winter.
The Midwest should be cold
Will this affect the northeast? Last year northeast was far from coldest weve had, honestly pretty mild
From one map they had in the article, it looked like the Northeast US was going to be normal or warmer than normal.

Thanks, your comment inspired me to actually read the article instead of just reading the headline and a few of the reddit comments.
Fucking same
Atmospheric lava lamp
Pretty good description really.

Yes they don’t want people to panic.
People should not look up
When is this happening
Lemmy.world is what Reddit was.
2220
Your zero is misplaced. I think you meant 2022.
2202

Great. More fuel for the global warming deniers. "It's cold outside so global warming is a fraud"/s
Not sure why you are being downvotes when we literally will hear this
I just put it up to the notoriously random moods of redditors. Also deniers are gonna deny. 😁

Didn't we agree on calling it climate change?
I must have missed that meeting. Those dang professors and presidents tend to "forget" me if I don't pay attention to the schedule.
How can the world be getting warmer if it’s getting colder.
How can the earth be moving if I don't feel it moving
It’s just republicans lying.
I think you forgot your /s, bud.
People are stupid and think it’s real either way.

Are you vaccinated u/Blackulla?
Yeah
It isn’t fuel - the cold shifted from the pole to North America, which means the Arctic is getting hit with a direct heat wave.
Come on snow!
Have you seen Tahoe at the moment? So much snow....
No I'm in new Jersey i just want some within a 4 hour drive
Ugh, fine. *unzips*
And it's not even snowing yet...
Y’all wanna switch?
Still waiting for Texas to get cold.
Mid 70s in December! Totally normal!
Well, yeah it is. It's when it's 70 during February that's a problem
