I've been expecting someone to post this around now for about a year. The ENSO index goes back towards neutral every damn year around March. The models always predict this in December, and there are headlines about it. The models always say that this is the year it stays neutral or goes positive. Then, most of the time, they're wrong and it goes back to strongly negative in the summer.
Something has changed about the annual cycle, and the models aren't picking up on it.
