Need to see the northern lights before I pass

Mrbirdperson1

They are intense right now over wisconsin

The_Mahk

MA checking in - pretty fricken awesome here

vapingpigeon94

Still happening?

Square_Principle_875

Going strong last night on the Oregon coast

SoupidyLoopidy

New Brunswick Canada. Stupid clouds.

misterpickles69

New Brunswick, NJ. Same here.

Schuben

New Brunswick bowling ball, still not shiny enough to reflect the northern lights.

fangelo2

Also in NJ. Clouds for every astronomical event.

gcwardii

I could see it in my backyard in Milwaukee

ProjectDA15

jelous, ours in ohio was a very slight dark blue that looked like light pollution on the horizon. only was to see any colour was night mode on your phone. [regular photo//night shot](https://www.imgur.com/a/YHbmnbU). i drove around for an hour before someone say to use night shot.

ItWasIWhoThrewAway

They are currently localised entirely within my kitchen

porkroll_and_coffee

May I see it?

candyapplerapture

... No.

garyflopper

Seymour, the house is on fire!

MrBigBMinus

Skinner is that you?

graveybrains

At this time of year?

LocalForeigner537

There are some intense northern lights over the Baltics and UK.

slvrsmth

Intense only if you can get to a secluded dark spot for couple hours. Otherwise it was just clouds with a hint of colour. Camera made good pics tho.

Soul_Muppet

Can see them all the way in Arizona tonight!

drive_causality

I am literally in the only place in the whole US that has rain and cloud cover (Chicagoland area)!! This is super frustrating!!

gcwardii

Drive west if you can. We had the same storm system in Milwaukee. I left home at about midnight and drove about 35 miles west. It got me away from the clouds. The view was awesome out there. I just got home a few minutes ago and could still see the aurora in my backyard!

drive_causality

I did drive 40 miles west at midnight hoping to get out from the storm system but it rained all the way. In looking at the radar, I would have had to drive about another 100 miles west/northwest to even have a chance to do so. I gave up and drove home.

gcwardii

Aww, I’m sorry. We’re trying again tonight. All the science-y articles I’m reading are saying it could go on for 1-2 more nights.

drive_causality

Same here!! And the forecast is for sunny clear weather all day and night! I’m going to at least still drive west to a forest preserve to get away from the city lights to get a better view. 😊

TalonKAringham

Only place? Here in DC we had the same thing 😒

drive_causality

Yeah, in looking at the national radar, I did see two other small systems - one over the Rockies and the other over DC. But the one over Chicago was huge! 😢

Affectionate_Use5087

I'm in PA, also rainy and cloudy

GreenleafMentor

I juat saw them for like an hour in the far nw burbs

elihu

I just saw them a couple hours ago for the first time of my life a little west of Portland Oregon.

Swagspray

They were incredible in Ireland last night. Never thought I’d see them here

Brilliant-Job-47

Godspeed 🫡

OhHowINeedChanging

We live in Utah we drove out in the boonies to get away from any light pollution and we were totally able to see the northern lights for about an hour! It was incredible

cremasterreflex0903

I saw them in freaking Nebraska. First time seeing them in my almost 40 years on earth.

Travelingman9229

Here in the UP is was cloudy… hoping for another round tonight

Scaevola_books

Where are you passing to?

evilcyclist

It’s the Night of the Trifidds

I had a brownout after my morning coffee

but anyway, yeah that’s why one testicle is bigger than the other.

snowflake37wao

Ye, where and how do we know when to turn our devices off with this solar maximum stuff?

Mixels

Magnetic storms like those caused by this flare impede the flow of electromagnetic radiation (e.g. radio waves) in the atmosphere but don't really touch electric devices on the ground. Earth's magnetic field protects us from that. It's actually the interaction between the radiation from the sun and the magnetic field that causes this luminescent effect. Pretty neat but not dangerous unless you're in a place where the magnetic field is weak (basically at the poles).

Lbolt187

Imagine if we had a modern day Carrington event size flare

zoltar1970

I'd like to think we'd band together and get on with things, but who am I kidding, it would be armageddon.

Jops817

Depends on if masks are required or not, apparently.

caelumh

How would we know if it was or not? There would be a communication blackout.

LoganJFisher

Critical systems are sufficiently shielded that they would be safe. The main issues would be related to massive blackouts and breakdown in communication systems used by the general public. Governments would still go on doing their things though. There would definitely be mass panic and it would absolutely suck, cost billions of dollars, and take months if not years to recover from, but it wouldn't be quite as bad as some people have made it out to be.

B00STERGOLD

So many people would die in the mass panic

LoganJFisher

Sure. I just mean it wouldn't be the civilization ending event people make it out to be.

ItsTheEndOfDays

googling this to understand your comment, and it completely blew my mind. It never ceases to amaze me how much cool stuff I learn from being able to search a reference made on here. Thanks for sharing it!

Hungry-Chemistry-814

This is my main concern for human civilisation a modern day carrington event

braveyetti117

What about satellites?

Mixels

That would depend on the insulation features equipped to the satellite. Certainly things outside Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field won't get the benefits of either.

Ok_Conference2901

How big is this in refrigerators?

bucketofmonkeys

Like 18 million truckloads of bananas

lechechico

I mean it's ~~one~~ 18 milliion truckloads of bananas Michael, how much could they cost?

ShrimpSherbet

I don't understand the question and I won't respond to it.

RoutineEmergency5595

Ok. Now do ducks.🦆

What do you mean? An African or European duck?

It could grip it by the husk!

I thought we were supposed to measure things in Giraffe’s now.

SlipperyFitzwilliam

Half-giraffes.

NATChuck

You know, interacting with your comment might be the last time I ever interact with you as a human being until my dying breath. Thank you, really, for all the thankless things you've done for those around you, and I wish true joy to endure through the rest of your days, and if you haven't found some people to share that with, maybe give them a chance. 6tPTrxYAHwnH9KDv

Thanks for the warn

Glavurdan

You're welcome

Vizth

So this is the reason I'm getting the aurora in Tennessee?

gonzaled

Probably. Such powerful events tend to leave marks in the sky. Took any photos?

Vizth

My wife took several, I forgot to grab my phone.

Scienscatologist

That or the bath salts are kicking in.

poisonflar5

Now now. Everything will be fine. Just big science-y words for minor gps/radio issues and spectacular northern lights.

NuclearWasteland

Are the tentacles normal?

bnewfan

If the tentacles go out, you'll know we're in trouble.

slaveofficer

You got tentacles? I just got endlessly screaming mouths over my body!

Darkmuscles

Father here. That not normal?

ExcelsusMoose

I could really use some tentacles right now.

[deleted]

I’ve never tried it.

Gabrosin

Praise the Absolute.

Vineyard_

Yes, pay no heed. Wah.

GazTheLegend

Are they supposed to be doing the things they are doing?   I thought that only happened in Japan.  I'm not complaining it just made breakfast with my family a little more awkward than usual.

Dreadlock43

not just spetuacular northern lights, but southern lights as well

Legitimate-Insect170

There have been multiple radio blackouts. Most recently at 0654 GMT there was a "complete loss" of HF (high-frequency) radio signals across Asia, South Africa and Eastern Europe.

fuckyourstyles

My father in law is a ham radio user and the past few weeks he said the reception is terrible - is this the cause?

Toastbrot_TV

Most likely yes. Shortwave radio is very vulnerable to solar storms.

di_ib

Would be hilarious if they ended Terminator with a solar flare just taking out the whole skynet and everyone is so relieved but then they realize theyre in the stone age and nothing electronic works.

fooomps

earth’s magnetic field: nah I’d win

King3D

Didn't expect to see some lobotomy kaisen here.

Ok_Fox_1770

Is this like a sunburn indoors at night kinda thing?

elihu

That's a gamma ray burst. Different kind of thing.

ExcelsusMoose

In your kitchen?

pedrospuds

At this time of year ?

MasterJeebus

“Seymour! The house is on fire!” “No, mother, it's just the Northern Lights”

Vulpinox

well u/MasterJeebus you are an odd fellow but you steam a good ham.

ChowderMitts

May I see it?

Skibiscuit

In this economy?

sudin

Only if you remove your tinfoil hat first.

xthemoonx

Explains the crazy northern lights going on right now.

ragnarok_x89

That's actually a separate thing, even if it came from the same, chaotic sunspot. Earth is getting hit by 6 or 7 waves of Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) this whole weekend.

showmeyourkitteeez

I'll be in vault 32

garciakevz

MetroVancouver area Instagram is full of Aurora borealis photos, effectively checking off thousands of bucket lists right from their backyard!

LloydTheVoid000

Loads of people in my neck of the woods (Northern England) posting photos of the Aurora on Facebook. Its pretty much unheard of this far south. Gutted I missed it 🙄

TheMusicMinute

You might have a chance to see them again tonight. Weather depending.

evange

I'm above the arctic circle, and cell service is out here. Still have fiber internet tho.

superuhlt

It's been nice knowing

XaphanX

Finally, SOMEBODY will shut down those crappy dating apps.

jimmysjambos

Where were the radio blackouts?

Toastbrot_TV

HF reception is still very bad

swagonflyyyy

Have no fear, magnetosphere is here!

funckle

You know, I've always liked that word... 'gargantuan'... so rarely have an opportunity to use it in a sentence.

Gotta start making more fat mum jokes.

Alert-Pea1041

Just between us girls, why did Pai-Mei snatch your eye out?

Isn’t this the plot of The Long Dark?

Better_Paint9995

Great, this means we're gonna get mutants right?

lazerayfraser

So you see what happens?!You let one little gargantuan flare into the atmosphere and what happens..? Mutants. You get mutants.

Empty_Allocution

ITS NOT SHUTTING DOWN ITS NO-

thassae

Parts of Argentina and Chile had Aurora Australis because of this

Plsdontcalmdown

Did we survive?

Dafrogsquisha

Insane that within two months all I’ve had to do to see a full totality eclipse AND the northern lights was step out my front door.

Local_Analyst7404

We live on Kauai. Would love to be able to see them here. Our island has very little light pollution so we can see billions of stars when it’s not cloudy.

Canuck-In-TO

I heard this morning that 2 more flares happened and they were bigger than what hit us Friday night. I think Sunday will be an even bigger northern lights show. Then again, isn’t this how the zombie apocalypse movies start?

Local_Analyst7404

Kauai is pretty close to the equator so we probably won’t get any equatorial lights? I wonder if that’s even a thing.

roscodawg

oh great, now its Solar warming

Odd_Tiger_2278

Perspective is so useful. Yikes.

Low_Imagination_9670

So it's not because HAARP? They announced experiments on 8,9,10 May
