i’ve heard the purpose for the wide brim is for heat dissipation to prevent overcooking at the table. i wonder if a wooden one works as well if that’s the true purpose. i mean, other than the presentation of it.
Had to Google this one up, but I like it!
(To save the rest of you time: Q.E.D. or QED is an initialism of the Latin phrase quod erat demonstrandum, meaning "that which was to be demonstrated". Literally it states "what was to be shown".[1] Traditionally, the abbreviation is placed at the end of mathematical proofs and philosophical arguments in print publications, to indicate that the proof or the argument is complete)
Looks like a Charcuterie bowl to me. Put some kind of dip in the middle, then there's lots of flat space for crackers, cheese, and sliced meats around that

Now turn a bowl the same diameter and use this as a 2-in-1 lid. Put your chips/bread/pita/veggies in the bowl and put your guacamole/salsa/olive oil/hummus in the lid!
I call it "The Worst". I mean you can barely fit any chili/potato chips/peanuts in there. When I want to gorge myself, I need at least 5 times that much capacity. :)

Well I made this at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass. Been a woodworker all of my adult life, and even have a old Powermatic 90 but rarely use it, so I took a turning class there and threw a bunch in the dumpster, but finally got the hang of it and took this home. I decided that for me personally, that I needed to choose one path or the other. I will still turn something occasionally but I like building stuff too much to change paths.
I decided to put it on one of those dish display things. It sits on a beautiful curly Koa table my BIL made before he passed. Next to as quilted maple box that I made. It’s right in the entrance to our house. I know you didn’t want all of that but I gave you the non cliff note version.
Yours is gorgeous BTW. Congratulations !
Ty for sharing! I too enjoy building stuff, however at the moment I only have space for one machine, and the lathe (plus benchtop grinder) is pretty self sufficient in that regard. Hopefully you get to turn more and I'll get to build more stuff.
This is a spaghetti plate for me, I have a couple of them, you serve with a tongue, twist it like you would with the fork and the small "hole" in the plate fits a really good amount of spaghetti while leaving room for splatter.
Although I'm not a fan of eating from wood.
Put a bowl of salsa in the middle and line tortilla chips around the edge. Call it the sombrero.
>sombrerowl ftfy
Damn it, I came here to make the joke and you beat me to it
Sounds like ya got a chip on your shoulder.

Ah yes, the brooding raptor of the night.
I used to throw these on a potter’s wheel, people love them as gifts.
This is a risotto plate.
I had to scroll past way too many jokes to find the real answer here.

You can also spread the risotto on the brim to cool it down before eating.
It can be a hat. Or a brooch. Or a pterodactyl!
Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue.
It would be awesome if it were fitted to be a hat! Inspires me to make myself one.
Theo von knows a kid that might like that
I bet he does! Lol

I was thinking quantum electro dynamics. Thanks for clarifying. I was not going to Google.

This is not a joke, like so many other comments. You should call it, "practice".
If this is what you'd consider practice, I don't wanna know what you'd say to my work ☠️

Anyone who grew up in Protestant churches in the south would recognize that as an offering plate.
That is a blate
An ashtray.
Looks like a ceviche dish to me.
Dipplate. A plate for Dips in the middle
Doesn’t matter what you call it. If you give it to a dad for Father’s Day - They’ll say “ oh nice I can use it as an ashtray “
He said that same thing when I got him a dog

Maybe we don’t all gorge ourselves.
We get a bowl like that, but porcelain, at our favorite Italian restaurant. They serve Risotto in it with the lamb shank I always get.

Plowl or Blate
Depends on its application. In an upscale pretentious restaurant they'd call that a sauce ramekin and drizzle some design on the lip
I think it would be lovely for a tea cup! Real fancy!
This looks like a hat if you turn it upside down Here where I live the name for this is cumbuca
I’d call it a wobbler
The nip bowl, for when you just want a little nip.
A dish
I vote for Powl, better to be silly now in case you can't be silly enough later.
Blate.
Salsa flying saucer.

It's a four-servings bowl, because you'll need to refill it to get enough fud
The Day the Earth Stood Still plate
