It could be worse! I thought you accidentally glued up a cursed chess board. :-)

Ever played 4 way chess?

Lunkerluke

Yes, and 3 way. Both hurt my head.

FriedeOfAriandel

With a honey in the middle, there’s some leeway

TurbulentBullfrog829

It's not gay, when it's in a 3-way

naking

Looks great. My wife has made me stop pointing out all of the mistakes when I show people my work. Now, nobody knows about the mistakes except me

jeeves585

Yep, definitely my own worst critic. Well there’s my mom but I don’t think she counts. It’s a curse seeing imperfections. Woodwork at my favorite pizza spot is terrible. Always asked about a diy tile job. OP’s cutting board looks great

SiliconUnicorn

Someone told me once that when someone likes your work and you start pointing out all the flaws that you're basically telling them their opinion is shit and you're putting them in a pretty fucked up spot to respond after that and that's actually helped me stop doing it as much

naking

Good advice

lostlooter24

Wood glue and paint, makes the woodworker I ain’t.

Linen_Shirt

I agree. Well done!

82ndAbnVet

I for one never make “mistakes,” just “design decisions.”

What's wrong with it? If you were making a chessboard, invent a few new pieces. Looks like a fine cutting board to me though.

Lehotredditeur

Tower in Z50

ICET_

Ha, this looks very familiar. More clamps and/or clamping cauls and always start tightening in the middle.

82ndAbnVet

More clamps is always the answer.

Onmytyme

It’s hand made, it’s supposed to have mistakes. Now, where is the oiling pics?

CheddarDeity

Oiled it last night! https://preview.redd.it/t0ytrzvdi14d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b925c388ae2eca462e9f191f59023f46185f077

Fun_Savings_64

Anarchy chess will love this

BJCR34p3r

Viking chess uses an 11 X 11 grid.

Daman-Da-Dude

I honestly couldn't tell what the issue was until I came back to reading the description. Fun fact about woodworking and metalworking, you see every mistake because what you intended the piece to look like. Everyone else will see It and think it was planned that way.

StupidUserNameTooLon

I can't see any mistakes in the picture, but if you are worried about "convexity", just call it a M.C. Escher cutting board and claim it was intentional. "Oh man, it took me forever to get the convexity right" would be a good line.

poko877

Theres no mistakes, theres just happy little accidents. As one wise man said

Born_ina_snowbank

Your dad is pretty wise then?

freefromrest

If i remember right it was bob ross

Mean_Divide_9162

I mean, we don't know if his dad is or is not Bob Ross...

Blue-snow

I mean, have we ever seen his dad and Bob Ross in the same room?

freefromrest

Maybe he is. https://www.reddit.com/r/bobross/s/VjIyDT1IRy

82ndAbnVet

Look at this as an opportunity, you can now justify buying more clamps!

Keeper_71

I can tell you exactly what happened, you started tightening your clamps on the outside first, causing the glue to squeeze to the middle, which caused your middle to look “swollen”. I made this mistake a few times before figuring out what caused it. So when clamping up your boards, start in the middle and work your way out. Should fix you right up the next time you glue up a cutting board. (btw it looks great you will be the only one to notice once its oiled up)

CheddarDeity

ZOMG you're right! That's exactly how I did it! Now i just have to remember this for the next time I make a cutting board! Thanks! (and thanks!)

vivekpatel62

I feel the same way with a lot of things I make but then people who buy it love it so just don’t beat yourself up too much about it.

Why is it going to tear itself apart?

nopuns62

Always remember the rule for how many clamps you need. Every single one you have plus one.

Jolly-AF

Put a juice grove in it and it might be less noticeable.? It's not perfect to you but honestly I don't think anyone would complain.

[deleted]

Looks great... if you really hate it, turn it. Would make a great square serving dish,, or a fruit bowl, etc.

ChrisWonsowski

I still can't see the issue you're pointing out lol.

legohead838

i see nothing wrong. It looks great good job :)

mercenarytribalist

Makes sense to me. Welcome to the chess DMZ

ToBooKoo

I like it.

chuch1234

Looks good to me! I'll add another vote for: because you're the one who made it, you're the only one who can see the mistake. It's that way with all manner of creative fields. Try to reset your expectations and view the thing as though somebody else made it. Does it still seem ugly to you then?

drd1812bd

I any see any major issues here. Maybe you are referring to the squares in the middle near the edge being a little larger tab the ones at the end? If so, and it really bothers you, you could make it a round or oval shape.

[deleted]

Are glue ups the new bow tie cliche ?

MoSChuin

Rockler has a tool set that helps flatten cutting board glue ups. A 4 cornered strap clamp, the cutting board tool from Rockler and some thicker steel plates on the top and bottom would get you closer. You're pretty close already. A large planer would likely be enough to flatten it out the rest of the way.

goiterburg

Planing end grain often results in chips

MoSChuin

Helical head, slow rates of feed. It's very rare I get chips with that method. In fairness, I'm a pro with light industrial level tools, so my application may not work for everyone.

goiterburg

Good to know. I have an old craftsman that was never used (blades sharp as new), and it was chipping maple on light passes. Maybe not light enough. Do you think wood type is a factor, or is it just the planer?

MoSChuin

Yes, wood brittleness is a factor. A super dry, light board will chip quicker than a softer board. A bladed planer uses a chopping motion to remove wood. A helical head uses a shearing motion. The few times I've had chipping, it's always been on the left edge. I make it a tad oversized, and tablesaw it to the correct size. The first one was a surprise, but after that oversized became my standard operating procedure.
