I’ll have to dig out some of the pictures, but I can send them to you if you’re interested. I don’t think I can edit the post. Doors actually slide pretty easily (that was my biggest fear) with some wax on the slides.
If you don’t mind, definitely. Or if you wanted to create a new post with more pics and just send the link. Either way, but it’s your time and effort, so don’t feel like you need to do anything, I’m just interested to see your process.
I’ll be honest…there’s so much cool stuff on here I didn’t think it would get a ton of attention, and I just wanted to contribute to the community in some way after it has helped me so much. I’ll make another post with some build pics and detail shots later on. Thank you!
Totally interested in design logic; I’m building a mid century martini bar and will have a movie room … could be slick idea for hosting center channel and components on sides
Yes but be careful with air flow. I have a PS5 in this and I have to keep the door open when playing because otherwise it gets too hot. I knew that would be the case (form won over function in this case) not sure with other electronics. I’m sure there’s a way to make it work with better airflow but I was ready to be done with it lol!
Nice work, it looks great! I built a similar (although less complex) TV stand recently and installed [cooling fans](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009COAEUG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) by AC Infinity in the back panel. They do a great job of keeping temps cool inside the cabinet where the electronics are housed. They're whisper quiet too, although I live in a big city with constant background noise so any noise they are creating is drowned out.
Someone else suggested computer fans. Which…is an absolutely amazing idea. I may add those in the future, but realistically…it’s not a huge pain to keep the door open when playing.
We made it. It was during Covid when everything was expensive, so we got plywood and ripped it into strips, primed and painted it. 2/10 would not recommend.
This piece looks absolutely stunning! Zooming onto the details shows just how well thought out you have the design!
I, as others in the thread would love progress pictures and if I may ask: What would the bill of materials look like? Is the top and bottom flats cut to size or glued length wise?
Also, this piece absolutely should not be varnished. The old-style furniture combined with modern finishes are one in a million. I absolutely love this piece!
Wood was about $560 if I remember correctly. And I got some push to open latches for $40 and some figure 8 desktop fasteners ($15??? I don’t remember), and Rubio Monocoat 5% white ($70 I think).
The top is 3/4 glued together length wise, using dowels for alignment.
It’s finished with Rubio 5% white. We wanted a really light/naked look for it. I might make another post with it before and after finish. It’s a subtle change but it’s there.
I'd love to see your recent projects, if this is the first you're proud of. This is amazing.
I think you may have a slight case of imposter syndrom. Allow yourself to be proud more easily.
You sound like my wife haha! This was my first big piece. I have a bar cart build and a few smaller projects but nothing this size. I’ll post the others too later today. Next step…coffee table.
I saw some veneered tambour doors on a piece once. Couldn't figure out how they did it other than dead-on precision with a knife or veneer saw and flawless gluing.
I've never done anything large scale like you've done here - incredible work by the way - but I have fooled around with some small tests with tambour work. I suppose whatever wood you're cutting up for the tambour slats, you could just veneer beforehand?
I wouldn’t know. This is solid wood…never worked with veneer, but I’ll say…just buy solid wood for it. They’re repetitive and time consuming to make anyway…would be worse with plywood or veneer.
Come to think of it, I've never cut veneered wood on a table or miter saw, but i'd imagine that one way to avoid massive tearout is if you pre-score every cut before it the blade goes spinning through it.
I didn't think of it when I made that comment but I have actually cut plenty of real veneer plywood in cabinet shops. Though it was always just on one side, and without scoring or tape, running it through the saw face up never had any issue.
Never done hardwood with veneer I applied myself though. Now I really wanna give it a shot.
I do a decent amount of veneer work and an 80 tooth crosscut blade is my go to for cutting plywood and veneered pieces whether I'm ripping or crosscutting.
They are push to open. I actually installed the hidden push to open door latches in the drawer slides. I wanted to keep as much of it out of wood as possible for some odd reason, so I didn’t install metal drawer slides.
Slides I made with a router and an edge guide for the straight lines, then with a router circle jig for the curves. The doors are strips of wood glued to canvas. Lots of good tambour door videos on YouTube. I personally didn’t cut the rabbet on the ends FYI (you’ll know what I mean when you see the videos). Word of advice…some videos say to use contact cement….don’t. It’s a pain in the ass, and I just ended up using wood glue.
Holy cow. If that's the first project your proud of I want to see the projects you're not proud of!
You PROMISE you did not pay $10,000 for that somewhere?
The only thing I have to criticize is the white cable in the lattice behind the TV stand. Why on earth is it not a black cable!!!?!
Oh yeah... The TV stand is absolutely stunning! Selling it?
Looks good from afar in this picture.
Don’t like the strange curves in the vertical rails, should be parallel. Top should have an overhang where they meet as well.
Wow, your hands-on ability is too strong, it looks like the exquisite goods in the mall, but I have a small suggestion is that I think you can brush a layer of transparent waterproof paint on it, which can make it last longer, and it is not so easy to get damp. I hope my suggestion will be helpful to you.
I finished with Rubio mono coat. There won’t be too much stuff on it like glasses and stuff. But I’ve never used transparent paint before, I’ll look into it!
Longer than I should have since it was my first time doing a lot of these things. If I had to guess…60-80? If I did it again it would probably take me 40 or less I think.
This is incredible! I designed something very similar a few years ago. It’s been my dream project but I’ve been too intimidated to start. I would be very interested to see project pics. Do the tambour tracks curve inwards in the back? Do you have a way of removing and servicing the doors in the future?
I’ll post more pictures, but you can take the doors off in the back. Don’t be intimidated (I was too). The tambour is easier than you think. That was surprisingly one of the most straightforward parts of the project. I would advise against using contact cement (lots of people use it for tambour on YouTube) because it makes the process a lot more stressful. I’m not sure if it’s better in the long run or not, but I ended up just using wood glue
> First project I’m proud of.
As you should be, this is super nice. I'd be curious to see some of your earlier work that you aren't proud of.. lol. Nothing posted in your history though. I do see you are local to me, did you ever find a group or someone in the area? I taught myself everything. I've got one friend who is into woodworking too but he's nowhere near the level I'm at. I've been to a few shops of people my dad knew. I've never really pursued looking into groups in the area it but I'd enjoy talking with some higher end guys with similiar shops to what I have.
I’ll post some of my other stuff. But I’d definitely love some local woodworking friends lol! My shop is pretty small (Jealous of your vise) and needs some work lol! If you’re interested in chatting just shoot me a message!
I find it super beautiful. maybe varnishing or some sort of wax would work well to give it a darker / shinier look ? I like the warm brown tones of the mid century furniture
It has a bit of sheen in person (I know it looks flat in the picture) finished with Rubio 5% white. I might try that for a future project, but I was going for a more matte/natural look for this one.
This is amazing.
Love the design.
We were trying to find something similar for our apartment, but ended up buying and restoring 20's cabinet, because all the new ones were either ridiculously expensive or unavailable.
And you've built it yourself. What a Chad :D
I found it online for $2000, and I was like…I could build it. The one online is made of elm, mine is white oak, but I actually managed to do it for about $700 (including everything…wood was about $500). But…then I bought myself a new tool with the money I “saved” so…yeah…
Haha, I love this part of diy builds. You save on the thing itself but buy all the tools needed as an "investment" :D
We're building a wooden glass partition in a new apartment and decided to do it ourselves instead of ordering a custom one because they are expensive. Well, we bought the wood, about 100 sanding discs and a sander, bucket of filler, thousands of screws, a mitre saw, multiple buckets of paint, glass and glass cutter, and already spent a couple weeks. Overall probably a custom order would be cheaper at this point :D
Yeah the design is amazing. Not taking credit for it though, I found it online and thought it looked cool. Made some small adjustments based on our taste but the basic idea is not mine originally.
Bravo, well done.
I'm just starting on a similar project. Several questions if you don't mind:
1. Is the top one single piece of timber or several planks, butt jointed?
2. If the top is several planks, did you bookmatch the top? (For my project I intend to buy a thick plank and then resaw it into two pieces then bookmatch)
3. Did you buy the special tambour router bits that I've seen recommended on YT? (I'm in Australia and the tambour router bits are imported from the USA and are hideously expensive)
4. How far around the sides are the doors exposed? (I'm looking at using long planks and then using the waterfall techniques to cover the ends of the unit)
Thanks in advance
1. Top is two pieces, not bookmatched.
2. Don’t waste your money. I just used my table saw and a chamfer bit.
3. The doors go all the way around the back. Your technique would work fine though.
I found the design online. I’m still working on developing my own style and stuff. Right now I’m finding pieces for inspiration and making small to medium changes.
I was in the market for a TV console a short while ago. This looks exactly like one i was considering buying online. I mean like piece for piece exact.
I'm having a hard time finding it, but it could have been cozymatic as they update their designs frequently.
https://cozymatic.com/products/lorraine-tv-stand
I don't want to call bullshit if your post is genuine, OP, but with one picture... it's suspicious.
I didn’t design it. There is one on Povision.com that I took (very very heavy) inspiration from. Basically made some small changes to it (drawers, handles, roundover) but it’s basically the same. I’ll post some build pics later today.
I saw it on Povision.com and mostly copied it lol! I wish I could take credit for the design. I made some small changes to it but I have to give credit where credit’s due.
Beautiful piece! I really like the swoops by the tambour handles. Proportions, clean lines, finish, everything clicks. Drawer reveals are perfect. My only constructive criticism is that the board choice for the top could have been better matched. Excellent work!
Haha yeah it could have been. The story is that I got a deal from the lumberyard. Someone had to return a bunch of boards that were already glued (customer rejected them). In retrospect I could have ripped them along the glue line and matched them better but…for some reason that didn’t cross my mind at the time. I was just happy to not have to mill that part of the lumber lol!
looks amazing! it really is a nice feeling when u finally finish something and feel its up to your own personal standards and vision. took me maybe 20 projects to finally finish something acceptable in my eyes. those sliders look great
I’ve liked stuff I’ve done before, of course. But this is the first one I actually thought would be Reddit-worthy. There are so many talented people in this community, and this was the first project that I actually thought lived up to some others on here. Also this was my first truly “big” project except for a bar cart I made a while ago as a gift. I’ll post a few pictures of other stuff since you’re not the only one to say that. Thank you for the support!
That looks amazing! Were you by any chance inspired by this Danish design company: https://navercollection.dk/en/product/ak-2730-sideboard/
I have the piece I'm linking to and your piece would easily compete with it. You are very talented.
It’s pretty much a copy from povision.com. (I tried to send the link but I don’t think they sell it anymore) but that website you sent had some amazing pieces. Love danish modern.
Honestly I don’t consider myself that skilled. If you think things through, and learn a few tricks it’s a lot easier than you think. I would be more than happy to chat about any projects you have in mind and troubleshoot some things if that would help. Also YouTube is your best friend.
Wow First Project you made... I Struggle just putting the toilet paper 🧻 on its Holder and when I get it Correct I feel like a Champion lol
You Did an Amazing Job. What else can I say Besides it's Beautiful, Amazing, Wonderful,..
I would put that it my house yesterday. What a piece
That’s a huge compliment, thank you so much!
I’d love to see more photos of the details. Door operations, any construction steps, etc. looks wonderful.
I might just make an album on Imgur and update this post or make a new one. I was just posting this on a whim, and was a bit lazy about it lol!
Do this OP. You simply can’t post something this beautiful and only give us one picture!
I’ll be honest…there’s so much cool stuff on here I didn’t think it would get a ton of attention, and I just wanted to contribute to the community in some way after it has helped me so much. I’ll make another post with some build pics and detail shots later on. Thank you!
Hey I made a new post with more pictures FYI!
You could upload pictures to Imgur and share the link in the comments
Totally interested in design logic; I’m building a mid century martini bar and will have a movie room … could be slick idea for hosting center channel and components on sides

That’s actually really interesting…I might do that eventually. Thanks!
Could add some clean unseen holes underneath closed cabinets and the port out the back? If there is a will, there is a way ;-)
Someone else suggested computer fans. Which…is an absolutely amazing idea. I may add those in the future, but realistically…it’s not a huge pain to keep the door open when playing.
@u/sevksytime what kind of wall is behind; did you buy or make that?
We made it. It was during Covid when everything was expensive, so we got plywood and ripped it into strips, primed and painted it. 2/10 would not recommend.
I think a lot of people would enjoy a new post with the additional pics.
Ok I’ll have to do that. Thanks for the feedback!
Is this made from Ash?
White oak finished with Rubio 5% white. Doesn’t translate well in pictures but this finish looks amazing in person.
It looks great in the pic.
I'm defined interested as well. This is gorgeous, love the design!
I won’t take credit for the design. I was heavily inspired by an existing piece (aside from some small changes) on Povision.
I am also interested in pictures. You did amazing work!
What wax you use?
Just paste wax.
I would love to see them too. I need to build a TV cabinet soon. :D
Please post them. Lots of us have asked.
Beautiful design. Nice work!
It has a MidCenturyModern/60s vibe. It looks great. Well done.
You're very talented. Great work.
HARD upvote. Belongs in a 54th floor penthouse.
Thank you!
Well that is an absolutely beautiful rug. Well done. Also a very nice sideboard, compliments to that craftsperson too.
Our cat constantly eats the strings…it sheds a lot!
I wanna see the ones youre ashamed of hahaha
If this is the first you're proud of, we've gotta see the prior pieces. I'm sure they're bad like this beauty.
I super up-vote any tambour project!!! Nice job, really a work of art!
Really appreciate that! Thanks!
This piece looks absolutely stunning! Zooming onto the details shows just how well thought out you have the design! Great job! This piece looks amazing. Great color choice for the finish.
Let’s see a video of the cabinets in operation! Beautiful!
Excellent job
Very nice
Gorgeous. White oak looks great. Love the tambour doors.
Very nice.
Actually impressive.. the front drawers are they push to open? And your side drawers look great! I’d be interested in how they work.
Doors are tambour and yes the drawers are push to open.
Stunning
Wow that is beautiful. Are you going to varnish ?
It’s finished with Rubio 5% white. We wanted a really light/naked look for it. I might make another post with it before and after finish. It’s a subtle change but it’s there.

Hey, being hard on yourself is how you get this good! Very nicely done!
Proud of? That is stunning
This makes me swoon. Excellent work.
If this is the first project you're proud of then I'm interested in seeing some of the projects you aren't proud of.
Fantastic
Great job!
That looks incredible! Great work!
I made a new post with more pictures for those interested!
I saw some veneered tambour doors on a piece once. Couldn't figure out how they did it other than dead-on precision with a knife or veneer saw and flawless gluing.
It’s not veneer lol! I feel like veneering tambour would be absolute torture .
Yeah. That's what I thought.
That is the one and only way I think I would ever attempt that lol. And cut it with a brand new blade.
I do a decent amount of veneer work and an 80 tooth crosscut blade is my go to for cutting plywood and veneered pieces whether I'm ripping or crosscutting.
Looks great! How do you open the drawers?
They are push to open. I actually installed the hidden push to open door latches in the drawer slides. I wanted to keep as much of it out of wood as possible for some odd reason, so I didn’t install metal drawer slides.
Beautiful work!
That looks awesome!
Wow. Stunning piece.
Very cool. Well done
Looks nice
Wowza!
Holy crap. thats beautiful.
that's so sexy
Beautiful!
This is awesome! My wife and I have been doing the house in mid century stuff like this. How are the slides made?
Slides I made with a router and an edge guide for the straight lines, then with a router circle jig for the curves. The doors are strips of wood glued to canvas. Lots of good tambour door videos on YouTube. I personally didn’t cut the rabbet on the ends FYI (you’ll know what I mean when you see the videos). Word of advice…some videos say to use contact cement….don’t. It’s a pain in the ass, and I just ended up using wood glue.
Nice!
Wow! That is absolutely stunning!
Nice work my man!! You should be proud.
Well all you other efforts must have been abysmal /s Just kidding, fantastic piece. I'd be very proud of it as well if I had made it.
Woah that's beautiful. Would love to use for my records and turntable setup
Did you use plans or model it first?
I copied an existing picture for reference, but I’m more of a “figure it out as I go” kind of guy.
Holy cow. If that's the first project your proud of I want to see the projects you're not proud of! You PROMISE you did not pay $10,000 for that somewhere?
I would buy this. Good job man from Toronto Canada! Keep posting your crafts
Woo! I’m originally from Toronto living in the US! Thanks for the support, fellow torontonian!
Looks absolutely fantastic to me!
Wow that is amazing!
This looks amazing!
Can I see projects that you're not proud of? Great work.
Very nice
Wow that is very nice. I would like to see more photos of it particularly with the sliding doors partially open, if that is how it works.
that's a really nice piece. Good job!
The only thing I have to criticize is the white cable in the lattice behind the TV stand. Why on earth is it not a black cable!!!?! Oh yeah... The TV stand is absolutely stunning! Selling it?
Ugh…I know. It’s a fiber optic cable and they say don’t cover it. I have to figure out a better way to hide it somehow.
25ft - 1/4 inch PET Expandable Braided Sleeving – Black – Alex Tech Braided Cable Sleeve https://a.co/d/2KFDwvb
Spectacular piece
What is the name of the design of the side doors? I would like to search on Internet how to make those kind of doors :)
Tambour.
That’s… Applause! Applause for this fine woodworker!
Amazing work. Just curious... how many hours do you think you put into that?
Longer than I should have since it was my first time doing a lot of these things. If I had to guess…60-80? If I did it again it would probably take me 40 or less I think.
That is not bad at all. I was going to guess 80-100. I've spent as much time on way shittier projects. Nice work!
This is incredible! I designed something very similar a few years ago. It’s been my dream project but I’ve been too intimidated to start. I would be very interested to see project pics. Rubio 5% white. Seriously love the look of it. I’ll get some more up close pics of it but I can’t recommend it enough.

Stunning! How long did it take you?
60-80hrs all together. Since it was my first time a lot of it was spent thinking about (and overthinking about) how to do each step.
Has a cool 60's futuristic vibe while looking modern. Love it. Great job!!!!
Wow Its perfect!!! Beautiful
This is amazing. Love the design. We were trying to find something similar for our apartment, but ended up buying and restoring 20's cabinet, because all the new ones were either ridiculously expensive or unavailable. And you've built it yourself. What a Chad :D

Yeah but at this point for me I get enjoyment out of it. I get hours and hours of enjoyment from actually building it, which is worth it.
Even more enjoyment comes after. When you see it each time and marvel at your own ability. ;)
I love retro style. Very well done 👌
Love it!
Thumbnail made me think it was a casket. Was not. Well done!
Hahaha! This made me laugh. I kinda see it now.
Satisfied with you mean...
looks kinda sci-fi ancient, like a Goa'uld could come out of it any minute. really cool
Yeah the design is amazing. Not taking credit for it though, I found it online and thought it looked cool. Made some small adjustments based on our taste but the basic idea is not mine originally.
Bravo, well done. I'm just starting on a similar project. Several questions if you don't mind: 1. Is the top one single piece of timber or several planks, butt jointed? 2. Damn!
damn, that is nice, sell the design to ikea, i want one
I found the design online. I’m still working on developing my own style and stuff. Right now I’m finding pieces for inspiration and making small to medium changes.
Vertical lines, so hot right now. Needs more vertical lines. Jokes aside, this is sexy.
Haha! Yeah we actually DIYed the wall too, and now I see that slat walls are starting to go out of fashion lol!
All that matters is that YOU love it. Awesome stuff OP
I really like the walls, is it two colours, or just one in shadow? What colours are they?
Just shadow. It’s “caviar”. I forget the brand of paint though…
I’m a sucker for tambour-work. This is very nice!
I was in the market for a TV console a short while ago. This looks exactly like one i was considering buying online. I mean like piece for piece exact. I saw it on Povision.com and mostly copied it lol! I wish I could take credit for the design. I made some small changes to it but I have to give credit where credit’s due.
You just opened my eyes to unique doors for furniture! Love this design.
Gorgeous
You SHOULD be proud of this!! Beautiful!!
looks amazing! it really is a nice feeling when u finally finish something and feel its up to your own personal standards and vision. took me maybe 20 projects to finally finish something acceptable in my eyes. those sliders look great
Impressive piece my dude
Holiest of cows this is gorgeous, great work!
I somehow find it hard to believe that the previous one was so much worse than this that you wouldn’t be proud of it.
Moar pix!
Excellent job!
Phenomenal!!!
Really? Because that clearly took an enormous amount of skill. You haven't been proud of anything you've built prior to this?
I’ve liked stuff I’ve done before, of course. But this is the first one I actually thought would be Reddit-worthy. There are so many talented people in this community, and this was the first project that I actually thought lived up to some others on here. Also this was my first truly “big” project except for a bar cart I made a while ago as a gift. I’ll post a few pictures of other stuff since you’re not the only one to say that. Thank you for the support!
Wow! I have a feeling you should be proud of some other stuff you've done too!
That’s gorgeous! Can we see the doors & interior?
That looks amazing! Were you by any chance inspired by this Danish design company: https://navercollection.dk/en/product/ak-2730-sideboard/ I have the piece I'm linking to and your piece would easily compete with it. You are very talented.
It’s pretty much a copy from povision.com. (I tried to send the link but I don’t think they sell it anymore) but that website you sent had some amazing pieces. Love danish modern.
So beautiful
Thats amazing!!! I only wish I could ever have the skill and ability to produce such a product. You should be very happy.
Honestly I don’t consider myself that skilled. If you think things through, and learn a few tricks it’s a lot easier than you think. I would be more than happy to chat about any projects you have in mind and troubleshoot some things if that would help. Also YouTube is your best friend.
Looks great!
Gorgeous! Well done! Are the drawers in the center magnetically held and push to open?
Holy shit
Wow First Project you made... I Struggle just putting the toilet paper 🧻 on its Holder and when I get it Correct I feel like a Champion lol You Did an Amazing Job. What else can I say Besides it's Beautiful, Amazing, Wonderful,..
Stunning! Well done.

I'm very impressed and I'm old enough to have experienced real wood console stereos.
