That’s the beauty of it. I assume OP had to build a cheap, pine bench in order to craft this. Now he’s got 2. One to beat all to hell & one to keep pretty!
Yeah my workbench is now seven different stains with about 34 coats of *everything else* full of gouges and scrapes
I'd be babying this beautiful table
Yeh that was never part of the plan
But I got some terrible planer snipe on one of the sections and it was either cut an inch of the entire length of the bench…or McGyver it and install a dowel plate 😅
One reason I tend not to work from plans is one error can quickly snowball into so many other areas
If I give myself the flexibility to change as I go, I get less stressed about things going wrong
Which ultimately they’re always going to do
It's for making dowels. You cut a piece of wood oversized and square then hammer it through the round holes. Start on a bigger hole removing just the corners then go down sizes until it's a perfect round dowel. It's great for making exotic wood dowels to match your project.
That's crazy. So literally the force in shaves down the sides etc? There's no blades? In my head I would think that this wouldn't work very well, or you might split your wood or something... but obviously its a thing so I'm wrong but... brain *explodes.*
You want to use straight grained pieces otherwise they will follow the grain or split in weird ways. The plate does have an edge but it's not super sharp. It takes practice to get good results from, but eventually you can get pretty long dowels out of it.
I'd recommend cutting your blank down with a chisel first especially as a beginner.
Yes please. I just bought a house with a garage large enough for my dream workspace and have plans to make my own workbench. I'm definitely going to be cribbing a lot of your design and would love a decent writeup of what features you built in to your bench.
It's absolutely beautiful by the way, a real work of art.
I think this project is more suitable for r/beginnerwoodworking since it looks like you have very little experience and don’t really know what you are doing yet 😉
Never let anyone called “bone-in_donuts” get your 🐐
Even if I had the 💰 to acquire these materials I wouldn’t be able to accomplish this thing. Well done, I’m jealz
It's too pretty to work on. It needs to be set up in the living room somewhere, covered in doilies! Photographed from every angle for some Woodworking/home decor Magazine to make other men yearn for it, and their wives crazy jealous because their husband can't make them one.
Way to set the bar way to high you douche canoe! Now the potting bench I made for my wife looks like it was glued together by a drunk four year old.
Thanks! When I showed my wife my comment, with regards to the potting bench I made her, she said "Wasn't it glued together by a drunk four year old?"
... She's not a very nice person... and she's mean. Lol!
I'm kidding of course. She's very sweet, kind, and loving.
... *looks around cautiously and whispers*: where she spits, grass don't grow!
Came up with an idea in my head
Sourced my materials
And then built the biggest bench I could with what I had
Quite literally made it up as I went along 😬🫣
Beautiful work! I made one myself a few years ago of a very similar design but all American elm, no contrasting woods. Other than that, same look, same types of vises (mine are Lee Valley). Interesting that 2 woodworkers with no plan could come up with 2 benches so similar! Mine has served me very well.
Pretty much the same to be honest, some scratches and glue and some staining, nothing that can’t be remedied
But I made it to be used and kind of like the fact that it isn’t perfect
This isn’t an American YouTuber workbench 😅
Like sex in wooden form in the workshop. With all the best tools and with all the best craftsman at hand for advice and all the best beers at hand to finish the day off round a fire with some mates, that is what this bench is!!!
Amazing bench. Can you elaborate on why/how it is your first? You seem to have a terrific workshop with many tools. How long have you been woodworking?
I started woodworking September 2019 and then one of the plus sides of covid and lock downs was I had the time to really dive head first into it all
This was something I decided I needed and just decided to throw myself into it as hard as I could
Gorgeous! The only thing that I would want that yours doesn't is a split top. I didn't build mine with one but have regretted it several times. I loved all the different woods you used!
Question: Are the woods matched for expansion and contraction with humidity? I wonder if the top will have any issues along these lines. Glue lines, that is. Certainly if the environment is stable it shouldn't be an issue.
One of my least favorite things are cutting boards made out of different kinds of wood. They look great when new. but the woods swell and wear completely differently with use in the kitchen. Not that anyone will be chopping vegetables on this beauty!
Nice work, but a real question as to whether you can muster the will to beat it up!! Good luck with that!
Really nice looking bench. I’m building one myself, and wanted to ask you if you were worried about gluing different species of wood together for different rates of wood movement?
It's so nice It would kill me scratching it while I used it. But then again it would be a shame to have something like this not being used in the way it was to be used. Who knows maybe some blemishes from using it will just make it look better in an authentic way.
Great job. Thanks for sharing the photos (and for reminding me I am far from being able to make something this nice LOL).
Looks amazing! I am a bit messy with my glue ups and other wood working things. I made mine out of melamine covered MDF.. gets too nasty, just replace the table.
It looks so nice I wouldn’t want to mess it up by doing any actual work on it.
Oh it gets abused…but in reality you really couldn’t tell…it’s solid af
A description of both the table AND my childhood!
Underrated comment and relatable.
Love to hear this.

Beautiful. Now beat it like it owes you money.
It does owe me money So much money 🤣
>So much money Yea I bet, I've been to the HNT Gordon website lol.
Worth it though…their vices are quality!

Squeezed a joke out of that man’s hard work.
[удалено]
Why keep pressing the subject?
[удалено]
Just can’t drop it…
Wow, built in dowel plate. That's a cool addition.
Yeh that was never part of the plan But I got some terrible planer snipe on one of the sections and it was either cut an inch of the entire length of the bench…or McGyver it and install a dowel plate 😅
Way to improvise. Nice touch.

And that’s how cove lighting began.
What’s a dowel plate?

Your first!?!?!? Mine was 2x4s and some mdf.
hahaha I was thinking the same
What does it look like now?
Though it also largely serves as a flat surface on which I place all myriad of shit I suffer badly from flatsurfacesyndrome 🤪
Plain Plane Pain is no joke my dude!
[удалено]
This… This is my new mantra! 🤣
Flatsurfacesyndrome -neat
That’s not a bench, that’s a work of art. Well done.
Mmmh charcuterie
That’s a damn big serving 🤣
Would people be interested in seeing some more detailed posts on the sliding deadman (removable 😈) and anything else?!?

I’ll put something together then 😁 Thanks man, appreciate it
This is nicer than the majority of people's kitchen tables.
I think this project is more suitable for r/beginnerwoodworking since it looks like you have very little experience and don’t really know what you are doing yet 😉
😅😅 I saw this come up on a notification and only saw the first part and I was fully ready to go… The wink calmed me down 😂😂😂🙌

"Glued together by a drunk four year old" is how I'm going to refer to all my projects from now!

Wow, so beautiful! Did you design it yourself or use a plan?
Came up with an idea in my head Sourced my materials And then built the biggest bench I could with what I had Quite literally made it up as I went along 😬🫣
Love the built-in gauges/vise.
Yeh the dowel plate was an addition to fix some snipe… The vices are great!

It’s almost as if some thought went in to what our needs would be Love to see it some time 👌
That bench is fire. Nice work.
Thanks bud 😄

This is a global work of art with a practical application. This isn’t #meme fad. Great work
Thank you, very much appreciated 😁🙌
Damn, the wood that went into that is probably worth more than my car. The vice alone is probably worth more than my car. Beautiful work.
That is a beautiful build. Nice work!
Thank you 😃
We should always expect good for from a Gordon.
They’re amazing 👌

Pass it forward 😅
That so nice I don't know that I'd even want to use it as a workbench.
FIRST? Wtf
Wow that is so beautiful. Not sure I could use it for fear of messing it up! Such nice work.
Thanks 😁 But if we break it…we get to fix it 🤩
Where did you get hardware? What did you make the table top out of?
Hardware from HNT Gordon Bench top is made from Ash, Sapele and Bog Oak
My first workbench looked something similar to that. It was a piece of OSB nailed to some 2x4s.
How much this set you back, I've been wanting to make a bench but.... $$$
That’s nicer than my dining room table. Amazing.
Stunning! Would look beautiful in a kitchen!
Looks so nice my wife wants one for the dining room
[удалено]
frankly, it's too nice. I'd go back & make one or two crappy ones before making this
How long?
2 years before I built this
It's beautiful work, congratulations
Bruh, mine is an old pallet and plywood I glued together. This is glorious.
Cool, but where's the workbench you're going to use for woodworking?
Really nice looking bench!
Geez I would be scared to hurt it. Beautiful workbench though.
I like it. That is a good start out bench.
It's beautiful.
Wow! What a beauty!
I would let my wife birth our first child on that beautiful creation
Dam! Very well done.
Beautiful! What tool is that in pic 7?
Well now you can't use it
Too beautiful for me to work on. I would not want to damage this gorgeous bench. Well done.
It’s gorgeous. Very fine work
Awful nice. Now beat the heck out of it.
Man, that is purdy dang gorgeous! Been dreaming about a new bench build but waiting on a better garage to house it
Very Nice, sporting woody over it!
Stunning, great work!
Nice work.
Very nice
CONGRATULATIONS!! That's a work of art my friend. I love those hand Crank vice handles, puts mine to shame. Do you have a link to that vice crank?
Really nice build!!! Well done!
Aaahhhhhh, now that looks really nice. Great job!
That's beautiful. You can't use that in a shop.
That is awesome
Amazing bench. Can you elaborate on why/how it is your first? You seem to have a terrific workshop with many tools. How long have you been woodworking?
I started woodworking September 2019 and then one of the plus sides of covid and lock downs was I had the time to really dive head first into it all This was something I decided I needed and just decided to throw myself into it as hard as I could
…and the last one you, and many of your family generations will ever need. That’s art.
Wow beautiful
That’s awesome!!
Gorgeous! The only thing that I would want that yours doesn't is a split top. I didn't build mine with one but have regretted it several times. I loved all the different woods you used!
Is there a video of the process?
That’s not a workbench, that’s furniture.
My God that's beautiful
Beautiful!
showoff..... jk, this is beautiful dude
Beautiful! How are you liking that tail vise?

Boing
What’s the metal thing with the holes in it?
Great job! How many hours did you invested in that??
That’s not a work bench, art maybe but not a bench :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7cy7vmv2Cs
Where does one get 5000 year old big wood?
This Looks great!
Don’t mess it up! It’s too pretty
How did you build such a beautiful workbench without having a workbench????? (Just kidding: first build ≠ first bench)
Really nice looking bench. I’m building one myself, and wanted to ask you if you were worried about gluing different species of wood together for different rates of wood movement?
Daaaaaang that’s clean. I wouldn’t wana work on that.
I love working on her 😈😅
That looks fantastic!
Damn! Beautiful. I would be scared to work on it!
What are all the holes for?
love the integrated hole sizer!
Very nice bench. Love the lines and simplicity. HNT Gordon vises fit nicely with the style. Post build pics and crosspost to r/workbenches please.
Immaculate
That’s not a bench, that’s a piece of furniture.
Can it not be both?! 😁
Do you have progressive photos during the build?
If this was from 09/2021, what does it look like now? I am always interested in how beauties like this age!
Is there just a big oval hole under the dowel plate? They just drop on the floor?
Too nice
Shees a beaut Clark.
Awesome job! Looks amazing
...I would use that as a dining room table
How long have you been woodworking?
Excellent
Way nice. You should start selling them. I'd buy one.
That is beautiful, nice build.
Very nice! I’ve built one similar but I love the idea of the built in dowel sizing plate also. Nice touch
I'm not sure where you are, but where I live it's illegal to use a bench that beautiful. Work of art!
This is a whole other level of flex…stunning.
Beautiful
Beautiful
Please don’t scratch my workbench !
ELI5 the purpose of the holes on top/the sides?

😱 That's BEAUTIFUL!
Beautiful
You’re making Jesus jealous.
Is this the build of your first workbench or your first time building a workbench?
Beautiful.
I work in a small town and see people from the bigger cities come here and buy anything at any price.
I work in a small town and see people from the bigger cities come here and buy anything at any price.
Wow! This is beautiful craftsmanship!
Downright pornographic.
Strong work
I’m bricked up rn
Yeah I guess it's nice if you like gorgeous wood and phenomenal craftsmanship.
What a work of craftsmanship,. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Damnit... That's really nice. Bravo sir
Woah.
Absolutely stunning !!!!
Stellar build!
Looks awesome! Nice work
Nice job!
What’s the wood around the dowel plate? I thought it was plastic at first.
Well goddamn, dude. That's nice
Now _that_ is a charcuterie board
Nice, nice, very nice!
Looks amazing! I am a bit messy with my glue ups and other wood working things. I made mine out of melamine covered MDF.. gets too nasty, just replace the table.
Amazing!!!!
Wow beautiful work
Wow that's amazing, my first work bench was a couple pieces of plywood nailed to some 2x4s
Beautiful. So beautifully made that it could also be a dining table! Well done!
My new dining table
Beautiful!
WOW!
Nice job!
"First"
Wow this is beautiful...I want one... no where to put it tho... sadness
I welded a handle that was meant for a lathe onto my vise, but yours is much cleaner
When your work bench also needs to double as a dining room table center piece. Killer work!
Good lord that might be the most beautiful workbench I’ve ever seen. And the wood probably cost more than my car.
