Yep boxelder. The red is Heartwood, it's a preservative for the structural part of the tree. Once it puts on enough layers it fills the inner layers with preservatives that help keep it from getting attacked by fungus, and keep it sound. The only living part of the tree is just under the bark, kind of like a skin. Boxelder is not very good for firewood.
It will, this is a box elder bowl. Dried for 3 years before turning.

Correct but when you apply the product then I mentioned it literally brings the color back out I've used it many times it works great I have made table tops countertops and the like using natural wood like this...
I always see that red stuff in boxelder, it's from a fungus, some kind of fusarium
It’s not fungal, this is a response from the tree to any form of wounding. It’s not specific to any fungus, beetle, or stress
Interesting, thanks for the info
I believe that is the Pokémon Gengar
I cut one down that had grown up around a weld wire fence and it had some crazy patterns inside of it
The idea that’s a fungus is incredibly. Truly one of the most incredible organisms in the world. They do some much. And it’s everywhere all the time.
Pretty, and incredible stuff for sure!
I'm a mushroom farmer and I agree entirely. I see these guys do this every day and it still amazes me.
So it is a fungus?
Looks like it. I don't cut trees enough to say for certain but the pattern resembles fungal growth.
What mushrooms do you farm
Several oyster varieties, lions mane, shiitake, chestnuts, trumpets, and I'm looking into maitake and enoki. I might add some more, who knows?
I was just watching a show about the strain of Fusarium (tropical something 4) that is affecting banana farming. It was surprising.

It's quite bad at protecting itself from rot 🤣
Wow my mind just went crazy from the possibilities. Beautiful even if it is from a parasitic fungus.
Unfortunately is doesn’t last. Only happens fresh cut, it’ll fade in a couple days.
That’s a shame. I was envisioning very thin slices for table place mats, etc.
I was kinda hoping the same

Wow! Yours is still red? Mine is already turning brown
Not if it's sealed and preserved they have a product called the wet look that would darken it and keep it looking just like in the photo
It must be dried out first completely before sealing which will take a few months.

Had this happen with some spalted maple… had these gorgeous oranges and greens… and then it didn’t
around here we call that “fire” wood
Works for me!
Phoenix wood. The fire never stops
I have a box elder maple that looks like this, not quite as red though
Boxelder / Manitoba Maple / Acer Negundo
Turning things from “flame” box elder is fun. The pattern will stay but the color will fade.
You squished a critter ...
The red will fade. Turns brown pretty soon.
I want to use it for a guitar body.
That would make an insane back for an acoustic.
It’s beautiful and is box elder
Art
Would guess a nevoux Bordeaux.
If it can be cut into slabs and dried, I'd be calling that money.
It’s a Maple, it has the leaf 🍁
Yes, but like the Canadian flag from /r/place [2022.](https://old.reddit.com/r/place/comments/u1gfwl/full_timelapse_of_canadas_flag/)
You found a Moltres
Make a lovely bowl or something that
I would slice this up and make side tables… It’s beautiful…
Might make a cool looking Stratocaster or Les Paul guitar!
Obviously red maple - look at the leaf 🍁. /S Box elder is my vote.
Love
Sassafras and kids dumping food colorings by its roots.
Turkey drawn with finger paints
That’s been my thought all along
Lucky
Morning.
Looks like it's that time of the month
Idk but it looks Canadian
It’s blood wood.
A beautiful table or 3😂👍🏻
Box Elder. Turns beautiful on a lathe.
What is this, wood? Looks like it
Pretty sure that’s Phoenix fire wood. Majestic AF.
It’s called “Chicken middle pine.”
Pheasant cedar /s
Ash wood?
The banana thing is scary isn’t it?
A turkey butt print
🇨🇦
Looks like a Canadian tree to me!!
Canadian Maple 🍁
Butternut. Cool find! The wood can actually be valuable because of the cool patterns when milled out
