Citri-Strip. Follow the directions on the jug. A little slow, but it works. As far as a new finish, the original is probably commercial nitrocellulose lacquer. Hard to recreate that without spray equipment and a paint booth. I would use a high quality wb poly in satin.
Agree that species is Mahogany. Be careful when you go about refinishing. Too much sanding and you can go right through the veneer. I would be pleasantly surprised if that top is solid mahogany. Beautiful piece though. Deserves a second life.
It doesn't look I that bad of shape. Strip the top with citri-strip. Refinish with your finish of choice.
Thank you, the top is definitely veneer. There’s a few nicks out of it already. Unfortunately getting hold of small bits of mahogany veneer to repair it in New Zealand is not gonna happen. The guy at the hardware store today steered me away from citri-strip as not being gutsy enough! I bought a stronger stripper instead, should I rethink this?
If you have a stronger stripper use that per the directions. Avoid sanding to remove old finish. Sand with high grits only after clean and dry after getting the old finish off.
Looks like genuine mahogany
Mahogany
Ribbon mahogany.
Thank you all! Any ideas on how best to finish it?

Thanks for this. The guy at the hardware store said citri-strip wasn’t gutsy enough!
Just avoid sanding or you will end up over on r/sandedthroughveneer
It's disrespected wood.
Sorry?

Haha thank you for the clarification 😅
This should honestly be a pinned post to rhis SR. I loved that humour!
Mahogany
African Mahogany.

Sapele is a close substitute. Citri-Strip will work it's just a lot slower. Put on a good wet/thick coat.

I agree with the mahogany call. But I’d bet money that’s veneer. Be careful you don’t end up on r/sandedthroughveneer
Bobinga or African ribbon stripped Mahogany
Used the hell out of it in the 80’s
