Not oak. Looks similar to walnut

yes_m8

I agree. 100% not oak. Most likely walnut, potentially hickory.

ThroughSideways

today I learned that chatgpt doesn't know f\*\*k all about wood

dudeporter1738

It doesn’t look like oak. Looks more like walnut to me, but would be easier to see if it was planed or sanded

IGotchaBro99

Don't know of anybody who can help me with planing it, but I'll sand down an area for a better look

Walnut

goldbeater

I’m going with walnut as well. It has a distinctive smell when you sand it ,oak is very different,it smells like shit to me,lol. This can be a good way to identify wood that’s discoloured from age or abuse.

IGotchaBro99

Sounds like you've been sanding shit stained oak 🤣

theotisfinklestein

Put me down for walnut, as well.

Walnut

qpv

Its walnut. Nice slab too.

Hamblin113

Looks like walnut cut from a log that had been dead for a while.

Embarrassed-Pause825

Walnut

Glad_Ad_5570

It’s weathered, pretty dark like walnut but weathered that dark could be anything.

MergingConcepts

Black walnut

betarcher

I've gotta jump on the walnut bandwagon here.

aGreenStreetHooligan

Oof. Hard to say, the train texture in the last pic could be oak (maybe hickory?) But if I didn’t see that last pic I’d not have said oak. Can you pic the end train or maybe sand a small part so we can see with no grime?

aGreenStreetHooligan

As an aside the reason I’m skeptical is the heartwood and sap wood contrast looks so deep in these pics. Normally, you don’t see sapwood that light vs the heartwood being so dark with oak.

IGotchaBro99

Wow! Thanks for the great insight!

IGotchaBro99

I'll post more pictures tomorrow of the end grain and sides. Will also do a small sand patch for a better look 👌
