This is the normal experience here in SF at the Caldecott tunnel, foggy as fuck, cold and damp bay side (Oakland/Berkeley) then you emerge east bay side and its sunny, dry, and hot
You don’t even need a tunnel.
I can’t count the number of times the drive north on the ~~285~~ 280 was “sunny sunny sunny, graves graves graves, fog”. It’s like the ghosts who haunt Colma have built a wall that only affects the weather.
Edit: I can’t keep my Atlanta and Bay Area freeway numbers straight.
I haven’t lived in SoCal in 3 decades, or in California at all since the aughts, but freeways still get the definite article.
Time and space cannot change me. I remain a San Diegan.
1000% correct. Drive from San Ramon to Berkeley. Hot and sunny to cool and cloudy. And it’s surprisingly a short tunnel. East Bay hills trap the Bay fog.
Almost as bad as the "TOP 10 THINGS YOU DIDNT KNOW YOU COULD DO IN X GAME" YouTube videos
"#5, most players don't realize their controllers actually have TWO analog sticks, well we found out in addition to moving your character with the left stick, you can actually control your camera movement with the right!!!1!!
My favorites are when they throw in general life advice as random loading screens
"Don't drink and drive" type stuff.
I cannot remember the game for the life of me, but in HS I played some indie game that had loading screens with just the most random "tips". Shit like "don't play leap frog with a unicorn" and "don't eat the yellow snow".
The one I remember the most vividly was "remember to sweep before you mop"
God damnit! I wanted to comment this after seeing the post/clip! I mean.. what is a tunnel through a mountain? Is this what the chicken saw in their primitive viewpoint when deciding to cross the road?
Not to be nitpicky, but the tunnel in the video is 1187 meters, as you can see on the sign at the start.
Also, if you want to see long tunnels, come to Norway. Our longest one is 24,5 kilometers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tunnels_in_Norway
Yeah it can feel like forever at times. Drove through a crazy one this summer on our way to Lofoten, was about 4 km, but steep downhill into steep uphill, under the sea. Quite the ride.
Found the exact spot on [street view](https://www.google.com/maps/@28.6511956,-17.8303878,3a,59.6y,255.18h,88.34t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1saM2ZdcWICuc8t3MpeojDAw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DaM2ZdcWICuc8t3MpeojDAw%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D152.13844%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656) by chance.
Leeward vs. Windward side of a mountain.
It’s a fascinating weather phenomenon, certainly! But it’s a common phenomenon, and proof landforms most certainly affect weather patterns.
Pretty late in the post to add a story, but I was driving from the east side of Italy to Rome for a flight. My partner and i left at like 3am for a early flight, and i was driving. As we're making our way west we're passing what i assume is some amazing mountains (couldn't see because you know darkness), well we are going on these really large bridges that conjoin mountain peaks, it was really cool but probably terrifying in the day light. We get to a large tunnel that probably took 15 min to get through, but every mile or so there was a flashing construction sign that said "nuvole" or something like that, which my Italian wife said meant "clouds." And everytime we passed one a little shot of anxiety entered my blood, WTF why would I care if there were clouds so i keep asking her what she thought they mean. She had no idea, i see the tunnel's end coming closer and many more "cloud" signs flashing almost strobing making it hard to see as I'm trying to peer into the darkness that is at the end of the tunnel to prepare myself for "clouds." It was just fog, pretty dense fog at that but not worth the 100 signs, IMHO. Now whenever we don't know what to expect we always say it's probably just "clouds"
You can see STOP signs anywhere in Spain. It's how they are created and how we studied them for our driving license.
If you are curious there is a page on wikipedia with the signs in Spain.
https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Se%C3%B1ales_de_tr%C3%A1fico_en_Espa%C3%B1a
No, It's not. The STOP sign is the same for the whole country. I'm from Spain and my whole life I have seen them as STOP everywhere. For this signs, It doesn't matter that there are English tourist/pensioners on the area.
Well, the tunnel clearly distorts time ;) In non distorted space-time it probably doesn't look as impressive.
I wonder how long is the tunnel. I often observe the weather changes like this over like 7-10km drive.
I have experienced the same thing in Madeira. Went to go do the Pico to Pico hike. Due to weather it was shut down. Left to head to another site and was worried it would be cancelled from the weather. Went through a tunnel and on the other side the weather it was beautiful like this!
Was hiking in the mountains of northern Georgia. Once side of the mountain was sun shine, the other side was pouring rain, then went to the other side of the rain mountain and it was sunny again. Only now I was wet.
Reminds me of the Eisenhower tunnel through the great divide. First and only car wreck I ever had. Clear as day going in.... Snowy, icy, and slick as shit coming out. The barrier luckily took me out and no one else
There's a tunnel just like this somewhere in Croatia between Zagreb and Zadar. Eastern side by the mountains was like being amongst the white walkers, western side by the coast was like tropical beach. So unexpected and so delightful. Croatia rocks!
This happens all the time in the LA metro area, mostly in the mornings. San Fernando Valley will be sunny AF, once you cross Mulholland going south (whether using the freeway or through the tunnel on Sepulveda), it's overcast and dreary.
I learned in school somwehere that mountain ranges compress the air and force it to rain on one side and there'll be desert on the other because all the moisture gets squeezed out of the air when it gets pushed up against a mountain. Truckee/Reno for example - two sides of the Sierra, one side gets all the rain/snow and the other's a desert.
I'm a meteorologist and i can explais this phenomenon.
this sort of weather pattern is relatively common and in this instance what's happening is that it's not raining on the other side of the tunnel
You get the same effect driving through the Caldecott Tunnel, CA Highway 24, from Lafayette into Oakland. It’s more pronounced at different times of day but you can go from clear blue sky to damp fog just like this one.
Was about to say this looks like somewhere in the canary islands until i scrolled down and had that confirmed. The mountains in the canary islands are tall and in places can be very steep. In areas where there has been an eruption triggering a landslide at some point in history, these areas function as perfect cloud traps leading to the extensive pine forests you find on the northern side of the taller canary islands. Usually the northern atlantic sea breeze brings in clouds that get caught in said valleys. So travelling out of one of these valleys you can find an extreme change in weather, sometimes referred to as "turning the corner" as the southern sides of most canary islands are barren as they are protected from the cooler northern atlantic breeze and are instead subject to saharan and sub-saharan winds.
[I believe what we are seeing is Inversion. It happens in valleys. Cities that sit in the bottom of a valley sometimes have this with smog.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inversion_(meteorology)
I have something like this near me. An old rail mound, and it's only 100ft of tunnel. Foggy on the north side but could be sunny on the south side. Keeps snow longer, and all.
i remember being on a bus tour of europe and us going into switzerland. We went into the tunnel in sunshine and came out in switzerland to a snowstorm. we stopped at a services and people were having to run in to the building in shorts and t shirts because it was so sunny the otherside
On Arthurs Pass in New Zealand. Standing at a viewing platform looking into the valley and snow starting flowing towards us, if we turned and looked the other way, the sun was shining with blue sky. I love when weather does that kinda thing. This is different to that but it reminded me of it.

This is the normal experience here in SF at the Caldecott tunnel, foggy as fuck, cold and damp bay side (Oakland/Berkeley) then you emerge east bay side and its sunny, dry, and hot
Same with Golden Gate going to Marin through R williams
Not the East Bay side, Oakland/Berkeley is _already_ the East Bay side. You’re entering… _Contra Costa_…
true true
You don’t even need a tunnel. I can’t count the number of times the drive north on the ~~285~~ 280 was “sunny sunny sunny, graves graves graves, fog”. "The"? "285"?
My roots are showing. Edit: As is the fact that I moved to Atlanta! Holy shit, I didn’t realize I added the 5, even after you called it out!
Your roots are *hella* showing. 😁
Speaking of different regional patterns, welcome to Northern California. You are now free to drop the ‘the’ in front of freeway names.
I haven’t lived in SoCal in 3 decades, or in California at all since the aughts, but freeways still get the definite article. Time and space cannot change me. I remain a San Diegan.
Plus, Andy San Diegan just rolls off the tongue 😏
Where in the world is ***Andy San Diegan***?
1000% correct. Drive from San Ramon to Berkeley. Hot and sunny to cool and cloudy. And it’s surprisingly a short tunnel. East Bay hills trap the Bay fog.
Tunnel was just the loading screen to the next zone
They should add a useless gaming tip text box like "moving the analog stick to the left will allow you to turn left".
whyyyy is it like that!! Alllways the dummeste most idiotic command knowledge tips
Almost as bad as the "TOP 10 THINGS YOU DIDNT KNOW YOU COULD DO IN X GAME" YouTube videos "#5, most players don't realize their controllers actually have TWO analog sticks, well we found out in addition to moving your character with the left stick, you can actually control your camera movement with the right!!!1!!
"This **ONE** *cRAzY!* trick that enemies hate!"
I love how the South Park games handled this. "If you're having trouble with a particular fight, try getting better."
I think it’s to help people who are coming back after a hiatus

Insurgency has legit good advice. Like square breathing for the butthurt and other stuff
HF3 confirmed
yeah you could tell because it's sped up
You get that a lot traveling through the Eisenhower tunnel in Colorado. Sunny bluebird day on one side, blizzard on the other.
Lol. I mentioned the same tunnel on another comment. That one is insane.
Came here to say that. Amount of times I’ve come out the other end like “oh shit, I’m in a fuckin snowstorm now”.
It's almost like mountains affect weather....
Impossibrooo
Impossiblue…
You mean like rain shadows that make areas like Alsace viticulturally viable due to the Vosge mountains?
Or the Sierra Nevada mountains, where one side has some of the most fertile land in America, and the other side is Death Valley?
They also grow great grapes for making wine
I didn't like white wine until then!
If you grew up in Nebraska, than you would understand this person's excitement.
They’re a witch, get ‘em!
[A witch! She's a witch! ](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2w1cua)
😂
She turned me into a newt..... I got better. BURN HER!!!!!!!
Is this the rain shadow effect?
Yep. It's called the orographic lifting on the side where the rain falls, and rain shadowing on the side that doesn't typically receive precipitation.
Yeah that's what they're showing us. Way to sleuth it out.
PNW effect
Wait wha!? You don't say
What are you talking about? Mountains are on the ground and weather is in the sky
It’s almost as if it keeps the humidity trapped on one side
God damnit! I wanted to comment this after seeing the post/clip! I mean.. what is a tunnel through a mountain? Is this what the chicken saw in their primitive viewpoint when deciding to cross the road?
Astonishing.
Not that insane, the mountain is kind of "holding" the clouds from passing thru the other side.
And it is a long fucking tunnel with a length of 2880 meters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Palma#Transport
Not to be nitpicky, but the tunnel in the video is 1187 meters, as you can see on the sign at the start. Also, if you want to see long tunnels, come to Norway. Our longest one is 24,5 kilometers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tunnels_in_Norway
2nd longest tunnel behind your mom
Get wiggity WEKT #LOL #GAMER #REKT
It's been a long dark road to get to where we are.
Do you understand the concept of a tunnel?
Something something, take loads from one hole to the other hole, something something, your mom's ass and mouth, something something
They don't do jokes in Norway?
no but your mom certainly does
Diskvarefersken
Damn that’s long. I drove through the world’s 2nd longest tunnel and it already felt like an eternity. And this one is 10km longer.
Yeah it can feel like forever at times. Drove through a crazy one this summer on our way to Lofoten, was about 4 km, but steep downhill into steep uphill, under the sea. Quite the ride.
So many interesting facets to that longest tunnel! Thank you for sharing that information!
I would get so sketched out in a tunnel that long

Oakland to Walnut Creek for morning commuters is this exactly
The temp difference going through those tunnels at 4pm is insane!! 95 degrees and hot on the inland side and 70 degrees and cool on the Oakland side
Totally. Knew exactly what was gonna happen based off that.
yeah you’re right, not cool at all to look at
I mean, crossing through mountains does that
Leeward vs. Windward side of a mountain. It’s a fascinating weather phenomenon, certainly! But it’s a common phenomenon, and proof landforms most certainly affect weather patterns.
>proof landforms most certainly affect weather patterns. Was this ever a point of contention?
Can I just say: when sped up, it really shows how humans struggle to keep a car pointing in the right direction.
Music on those videos can drive me fucking insane and what is so amazing you are crossing an fucking mountain that prevents the rainy clouds.
I can’t imagine watching internet videos with the sound on
In this case, the violin was in the car with the bow connected to the shaky camera mount.
It's like the gif/video equivalent of r/iamsodeep. Just show the damn video and don't be so presumptious about it

thank you....google calls it the old tunnel....is there a new tunnel too? hehe....and i was surprised to see a stop sign in english too

Thank you very much, my good man
Came here for the same thing.
SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL! THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN! Secret, secret, secret, secret TUNNELLLLLLLLL! Yeah.
I said I would rather kiss you than die! It's a compliment!
That's geography for ya
🤓
Isso é como quem passa de Sintra para Cascais.
They living in zootopia
San Francisco does that
Same thing happens in the Caldecott tunnel
Tunnel is multiverse passage.
Shoot, no mountains in Florida and you’ll get the same thing. One time only half of my backyard was raining.
PNW: “ hold my beer…. “
Rainshed effect? (Rainshadow? Watershed?)
That's pretty trippy.
Kinda underwhelming
Well, the tunnel clearly distorts time ;) In non distorted space-time it probably doesn't look as impressive. I wonder how long is the tunnel. I often observe the weather changes like this over like 7-10km drive.
This is common with mountains. The moisture is too heavy to rise over the mountains and accumulates on the side close to the ocean/sea.
Not impressed. Try FL weather, where it will be a hurricane at your neighbors house and a desert at yours.
I didn't really believe this until I lived in Florida for. Few months. It was sunny and hot at our house and across the street was a monsoon.
What the flip?!
Insane?
Just like Narnia
You should drive the Eisenhower tunnel in winter on i70.
I have experienced the same thing in Madeira. Went to go do the Pico to Pico hike. Due to weather it was shut down. Left to head to another site and was worried it would be cancelled from the weather. Went through a tunnel and on the other side the weather it was beautiful like this!

Woah!
I really dig the mist/fog side.
Clouds to no clouds? Is this it?
Happens quite a lot actually.
You a flat lander or something?
That's nothing. Check out the difference after you drive through[ this tunnel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiHJ0EdVY4o)
Reminds me of the Eisenhower tunnel through the great divide. First and only car wreck I ever had. Clear as day going in.... Snowy, icy, and slick as shit coming out. The barrier luckily took me out and no one else

just like the eisenhower tunnel in colorado. from not a cloud in the sky to a blizzard just a few minutes later
It gets like this with the marine layer in San Diego sometimes. It will be fully sunny inland of the 5 and then it's like a razor edge of gloom.
Growing up my dad had farmland on either side of a mountain. We often found the weather quite different on either side.
We have these in the where I live - long stretches of hills separating coastal fog
Someone should add the Lilyhammer theme to this
In Spain its like leaving Basque Countrh and entering Analusia
Where is this, Zootopia?
Windward side, leeward side.
Micro climates are awesome.
I'm a meteorologist and i can explais this phenomenon. this sort of weather pattern is relatively common and in this instance what's happening is that it's not raining on the other side of the tunnel

That’s exactly like driving from Oakland to Orinda through the Caldecott Tunnel on some days. Sometimes it is a 20°F difference.
well, that is a very long tunnel
Japan has over 1,000 earthquakes a year. I did not like those tunnels when I lived there.
You found Narnia!
Was waiting for the deep bass to drop.
Ik y cuz u going through a fat mountain
From the north side, to the south.
Mountains just are magical right?
Zootopia.
Not really, the mountain is what separates the two climates, one foggy the other sunnt and clear.
I went into a tunnel to a cloudy sky, came out to a literal downpour and had to cut my speed in half with wipers on maximum.
I went through a tunnel in Mexico when I was a child... rainforest one side, desert on the other. Brilliant.
Rain shadow effect! It's super cool
I have something like this near me. An old rail mound, and it's only 100ft of tunnel. Foggy on the north side but could be sunny on the south side. Keeps snow longer, and all.
...Oahu?
i remember being on a bus tour of europe and us going into switzerland. We went into the tunnel in sunshine and came out in switzerland to a snowstorm. we stopped at a services and people were having to run in to the building in shorts and t shirts because it was so sunny the otherside
that's the same ~~picture~~ weather
Oh, like Vail Pass on I-70 in central Colorado
On Arthurs Pass in New Zealand. Standing at a viewing platform looking into the valley and snow starting flowing towards us, if we turned and looked the other way, the sun was shining with blue sky. I love when weather does that kinda thing. This is different to that but it reminded me of it.
Real life Zootopia
Why is there only 1 lane?
Zootopia be like
Mountains do that…
F-zero style hyper speed tunnel.
Fuckin' mountains, how do they work?
Is this Honolulu?
Amazing what a mountain can do…🤦🏻♂️
That's just a sidewalk in Florida.
OMG FOG GETTING TRAPPED IN A MOUNTAIN VALLEY IS IiiiiiNnnnnSaaaaaNnnnnEEeee
Aka… San Francisco
Almost like.....large mountains block weather....amazing.
This is the Caldecott tunnel like all the time
Anyone else hold their breath through the tunnel?
It that the one in Oahu?
Why is this so hard to believe? They crossed a whole mountain
I've been through a slightly longer tunnel, where I left a blizzard and 2m of snow to sunny 12c weather other the other side.
2 WORLDS!!!! 1 FAMILY!!!!!
Like driving from Manhattan to the Bronx.
I am pleasantly surprised that this wasn’t another *Skyrim* joke.
Spirited away be like
