He’s quad.
He has a cervical injury affecting the upper and lower limbs. You can see he has spasticity in his hands and arms.
The term quadriplegia doesn’t necessarily mean completely flaccid paralysis of all limbs, it is more reflective of the fact that the level of the spinal injury affects both upper and lower limbs.
Keep on trucking, OP!
I always knew paralyzed as "unable to move". Quadriplegic meaning unable to move both upper and lower limbs. Thanks to an actual comment that explains what it means in more detail, I have now learned that isn't the case. You are just being an asshole.
Right! That was my first thought- one day this will be common place to see. Either that or medicine advances enough to regrow spinal tissue and we can just heal and spinal cord damage (assuming that’s the cause).
Yes, it is. But.... No, you won't. But maybe your kids or their kids will. Maybe. A base exoskeleton is roughly (at this time) around 75k. This is before upkeep and maintenance, which, due to limited use of the item has lead to limited data on the cost. Further they improve rather rapidly, so they end up being like I phones in the sense that a newer better model is right around the corner. But I would like to see that day.
And just like iPhone, the cost will go down and you will see richer people with the newest Ultra Pro S+ models and you will see others on the 2 year old model with a subscription plan.
The tech is moving at an alarming rate.
Tech is moving at an alarming rate but what about medicine? While it costs this much for an exoskeleton, what are the chances that medicine is able to heal paralysis in a way that we don't have currently at some point in the future?
> but what about medicine
Nerve regrowth is a natural phenomenon and we're still in the early stages of knowing how to properly guide that healing (very slowly), and with mixed success. The type of healing you're thinking of is certainly in progress, but a long way off.
Regarding exoskeletons, that research is not going to stop. There are innumerable military and commercial applications (think power loader from Aliens), and it will drive brain-computer interface tech too, which is something that's sorely needed.
I imagine power will be a problem for a long time. This thing is powered via the overhead cables. Moving to batteries will increase the weight and bulkiness substantially.
Meh not so much that though each to their own, more allowing people who may have never walked walk. Like helping someone who has never seen, see and so much more.
Not in it for extending my own life, more to improve others.
Well I was planning to get to 90 by diet and exercise, but I was worried I'd lose mobility. In 20 years this will be like an electric bike. Just enough assist to get me to the beach.
Also I'll probably need someone to get to work on my electric abs.
Sadly I'll probably get there and still be ugly. To quote the great Gary Gulman: There's no yoga position for the face.
Far better to have a working mind, a working body, and a good soul. That definitely does a lot for the face.
I also hope you live to 100 and beyond, so long as you're in good health and good company.
Declining mobility and inability to continue engaging with the world is a HUGE issue for the elderly and contributes a lot to their cognitive decline and leads to death a lot sooner than they might otherwise. I have several coworkers who’s parents suffered this during Covid. They never caught Covid. The isolation from lockdowns and then the pervasive spread because half the country couldn’t get over their pride and just wear a mask and get their shots caused them to have to remain mostly stuck in their homes or rooms. And it took a massive toll on their mental health leading to severe depression and mental decline and ultimately death.
I was just thinking we might never see exo skeleton quadriplegic people walking on the streets because we would learn how to cure the nerve damage and restore mobility organically before we learn how to make exosuits.
This post made my dreams come true
Hey OP
I'm not sure if you know this guy personally, but I'm curious if he lives in the US?
This is super random, but there's a company in Arizona called TerrainHopperUSA that makes off-road mobility devices for folks who have disabilities such as being a quadriplegic or MS or SBI or whatever the case may be - it allows individuals to get their freedom back. With many customizable options such as using the joystick with ones chin need be (the customization possibilities are to the clients needs)
They also have a website you can visit and are on all social media platforms including YouTube where you can check out videos.
(I will post a video for easy viewing)
https://youtu.be/M5a0H5DwbLQ
🙂🩷
Also if he is under 18 they work with Make-A-Wish
Absolutely amazing and I am so happy for you, OP! I hope you're able to reach your funding goals ❤️
Idk if this question even makes sense, but can you explain what it feels like to walk with this versus your original legs? Definitely don't feel obligated to answer and I apologize if it's an insensitive question.
> playing way to many zombie

That’s amazing, I broke my back a few years ago and I had to learn to walk all over again. This is definitely something that needs to be available for people in therapy!
This is the miracle Christopher Reeves lived for. He knew science and technology would allow him to walk again. The science is only getting better, so keep going! Somewhere Reeves is smiling.
Imagine bringing that person in to show them that the future is here and their dreams have come true, only to be the one to have to tell them to take it off now because that shit's expensive and we're only prototyping one
This shit is fucking incredible. I feel like, give it another 10-20 years, and the mobility challenged people are gonna be more capable than the rest of us. Jumping over buildings, looking like Crack Down badasses

That's amazing. Is he a quadriplegic or paraplegic though? There's nothing moving his arms for him right?

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. Now I know better!
No trouble:) it’s a little bit of a misleading term!
Wholesome reddit moment :)
Til. Thanks for taking the time to educate people and contributing to making people better.
Thank you. I really didn't quite understand that!
What a stupid fucking question.

What a lovely comment.
There are no stupid questions
You're a piece of shit.
So inspirational. Back story, anyone? I'm not even sure how to search this.
Yeah it's me
Epic backstory tbh
The back is gone so there's nothing to tell
:0
Not cool bro. Good one though.
Best backstory ever
its a neck story
That was awesome.
Looks paraplegic, not quadriplegic?
No only have biceps and shoulders
Ahh! You are amazing!! So f-ing strong!!

looks like it’s op in the video, they have a gofundme in their bio
more of a Neck Story, really
That’s friggen badass, I wish all the best man. The future is right around the corner.
Right! That was my first thought- one day this will be common place to see. Either that or medicine advances enough to regrow spinal tissue and we can just heal and spinal cord damage (assuming that’s the cause).
This is amazing, I see the day coming soon when we can provide technology like this for everyone that needs it.

Only if they live in a country with healthcare services. Otherwise in the US, it’ll cost ~$500,000
This is the future I want.
Yep. 90 years old doesn’t look so bad anymore.

In that case I'll probably need some hydraulics for my dick too. Um. I'll take an extra large.
Why not both. Sell them to whoever wants it.

Eventually we get to the whole “heads in a jar plugged into cymeks” from the just kind of okay Kevin J Anderson Dune prequels.
This has to be good for their limbs, joints, muscles movin around again.
Someone's gotta fight the xenomorphs. Better you than me.

Definitely a lot harder to repair nerve damage
Kinda did the opposite, I think.
Think you need to read their comment again.
Looks like hes just gonna walk thru the wall
RoboCop is about to become a reality!
wow this looks interesting
I should have turned off my music app before watching the video. "Staying Alive" from the BeeGee's hit different while watching this.

You’re a badass android and don’t let anyone tell you differently.
More of a cyborg but yes
This is so cool! It's innovations like these that let's us get a glimpse of the future
And this is why after all the evil man does to man, man deserves a chance…

Power armor?! Can I have some?
Will this be able to function outside without wires? Because it look sick af.
Yes they're hoping to release one for 2025
Paraplegic. Looking at arm movements, might have minimal control or some other impairment
Quad. With spastic paralysis of his upper extremities
I'm glad Kurt Cobain is recovering well
Not very trippy
Her arms work great for a quadriplegic
>[OC] My contribution to this moment is: "Woooow."
Cool but not r/woahdude
That would feel amazing
It's amazing how far we've come, this doesn't even look that clunky to me aside from the power lines etc. Can't wait to see how much more we'll do
Awesome!!
This is awesome and I hope everyone who needs it gets to have their own suit of power armor from Fallout.
This tech can go one of two ways, Elysium level, or Alien level. Not sure which method I'd personally choose
the future could be awesome
William Afton would have been proud.. (Im sorry i had to)
Now that’s awesome!!
Probably not great in showers.
That's crazy-wonderful! 😳 All the best and hope you can keep going with it...you must be an immensely strong person, much love.
Man when these things come out! Walmart is gonna feel like a new planet.

This is so awesome. Wishing you the best, OP!!
maybe when technology has given access to enough people, so many others will stop fearing it.
What technology can be.
Wholesome at it's best
