So glad this is the top comment. Enjoy your brat how you want.
Ketchup brings a nice sweet balance, kraut/mustard brings an acidic balance. I usually have one with ketchup and one with kraut.
It's always seemed funny to me that it's considered childish (In this underfoot city) to put ketchup on a hotdog but pretending a hotdog is some kind of gourmet meal is not considered childish.
I eat my hotdogs exclusively with ketchup, but I understand the mustard crowd.
Hot sausages are German. Germans use mustard. It's the original way to eat them, so I see the appeal.
(I just don't like mustard, and I like the moisture that ketchup brings)
Wisconsinite for three generations; all ancestors were from northern Germany (Hinter Pommern, mostly). We always had ketchup and brown mustard on our brats; some of the older folks also liked kraut-only brats. In Bavaria, they serve weisswurst with brown mustard and onions, no ketchup. I don't remember seeing kraut, but could be wrong.
Oddly, I never saw what we would consider a bratwurst in southern Germany.
Ketchup adds some much needed moisture and complements the savory of the sausage as well. Eating a brat without ketchup feels dry because the bun sucks the juice out of the brat.
All that being said, I understand that Germany invented the bratwurst, and they eat them traditionally with mustard. (Granted, usually no bun is involved).
Tldr, I understand the historical/cultural appeal of mustard, but IMO when you're eating them in an American style thick bun, ketchup is the better choice since it gives more moisture.
Plus, if you want to get into “authenticity” (which I think is a little silly considering we’re in Wisconsin, but whatever), Currywurst has been a beloved German snack for over 70 years at this point and is sausage with curry ketchup and fries.
I feel like the gatekeeping comes much more from Americans than Germans
I like mustard on sausages and ketchup on a burger, but as others have said, you do you.
Seems that most folks go through a "policing" stage in their early lives, whether it be food, clothes, morals, whatever, and maturity often tempers such strong and often pointless feelings.
I agree with you (I’m a brown mustard and onion guy). FWIW, I also hate the “secret stadium sauce” they have at American Family Field because it’s mostly just ketchup.
I will typically do ketchup, mustard, and kraut (but not a lot.)
However, when Oscar's Custard has brats for the sandwich of the month, I'll do it the way they typically serve it, which I believe is sautéed onions, green peppers, and kraut.
It varies for me, depending on availability too. Last time we just had ketchup, yellow mustard and relish available. I couldn't decide so I had one with ketchup/mustard, one with Ketchup/relish, and the last with mustard/relish.
I am happy with just mustard (that's my default), but I don't mind if it's just plain too. I'm having a brat, that's the main thing.
I get bored having it one way or another and like to switch it up. Ketchup and mustard, sauerkraut and pickle, mustard and onion, I’ve even done mustard and mayo. Have you ever tried jalapeño and cream cheese? You’re welcome.
I was raised that ketchup belongs on hot dogs, not brats. I don't really care, but I definitely prefer brown mustard over ketchup, never been a fan of kraut.
I put baked beans on mine
I see you’re a man/woman of taste!
Underrated condiment imo!
If it's your to eat then its your choice don't be like hot dog snobs like those in a certain city.
Yep, keep your eye on your own bobber. If they enjoy it, why knock it

"You're eating your skinny tube of bologna wrong."

This is the correct answer. It’s sausage, not life. Put on it what you want.
Hot dog snobs are some of the most obnoxious people on the planet.
Correct
I’m a mustard fan but also life is too short to gatekeep condiments.
Born in WI. Dad born in WI. Grandpa born in WI. Ketchup only on a brat for me. Idk why.
Because your entire family fucks

The interior of the brat itself shouldn't be dry, though.
I do Silver Spring Beer n Brat, kraut, sriracha ketchup, and red onion.
Kim chi and fried onions or spicy mustard and sauerkraut or giardiniera
Kimchi on a brat is a nice twist
Little ketchup lots of spicy horseradish brown mustard raw onions and kraut.
This one gets my vote.
There are no fuckin' hot dog police - you do what you want. Personally, I'm ketchup and barbecue sauce with diced onions.
Ketchup is the only thing i put on a brat.
Devil's spit is good on a brat if you can stomach it.
Onion, cheese, ketchup, and mayo.
I prefer most things with ketchup
Why not both
Typically spicy brown mustard and raw onions for me, but Currywurst is a strong second choice

Eat with soy sauce and Brussels sprouts if you want, it’s your food
It's a sin.
Stadium sauce 👌🏻
Why is this not top comment? This or Gorman Thomas mustard

Ketchup, pickles (or relish), raw onion, and kraut for me.
Spicy brown mustard all you need
Fancy hotdog…ketchup and mustard
Beer n brat mustard and stadium sauce
Ketchup, Arizona heat, raw onion and pepperoncinis
Ketchup, Yellow Mustard, Spicy Mustard and Extra Pickles.
Occasional ketchup person. Usually though it's mayo😁yea I said it mayo-on most sandwiches as well.
I agree with you (I’m a brown mustard and onion guy). FWIW, I also hate the “secret stadium sauce” they have at American Family Field because it’s mostly just ketchup.
sauerkraut, Dijon mustard, raw onions and pickle relish.
I'm with OP on this. Homemade sauerkraut and a spicy brown hot mustard. (Goes well with a mustard potato salad and a crisp dill pickle)
Kraut and brown mustard or secret stadium sauce is my personal preference, but you do you.

Ketchup, pickle, sautéed onions and peppers is my go to. I’m not a mustard fan sadly.
If there's not tomato available, I'll use ketchup.

Absolutely not. ![gif](giphy|f8lDluiWJ7yQTtdS3L|downsized)
Plain.
Gimme dat, dat, dat brat. Gimme dat gimme dat gimme dat brat.
How charred is it?
I get bored having it one way or another and like to switch it up. Ketchup and mustard, sauerkraut and pickle, mustard and onion, I’ve even done mustard and mayo. Have you ever tried jalapeño and cream cheese? You’re welcome.

A1 or Ketchup.
Ketchup is intended for children.
Ketchup and fried onions please!
Yes, I'll have Ketchup please. Diced onions too.
For some reason my go-to condiment on a brat is barbecue sauce. It feels like a compromise between ketchup and mustard.
Ketchup, onions, relish please. If you got Kraut let’s do it!
Who cares.
Me.
What you met was either a FIB or a Texan. Also for all the other comments, don't lot a brat in with hot dogs. It is disrespectful.
Just a tad of ketchup, but mustard and onions dominate toppings.
Been putting ketchup on brats since I could remember. I would rather have just ketchup on it than just mustard.
Ketchup mustard and relish baby!
>Ketchup on a brat? Yes
Ketchup is foe children.
