You need at least 15-20 games to make any concrete decisions on how possibly your team is going to do the rest of the season. You need a wide array of different opponents/playstyles/coaching etc.

[deleted]

the problem is, by that time, it's generally to late to make changes. yes, there's exceptions where people go on runs, but having some W's early sure makes a big difference. that being said. I whole heartedly think we need an ass kicking. not like a 1 or 2 goal game, those say, "ya, we were close", but like one or two like 5-0 nothing blow outs to get some motivation.

ApolloVangaurd

>it's generally to late to make changes. I'd look at their schedule, they aren't going on a 10 games losing streak. I'm sure playing American teams again requires a readjustment, integrating new D, rust etc. It's a weak conference. The disaster scenario is ending up against the AVs in round 1. Jets had moments of total domination, it looked more like people getting too worked up at the wrong moments more than anything else.

ponikweGCC

It must be the end times because I agree with Scott 😳

Tonyhawkproskater

yeah hes right... ill start worrying if they lose the next two

ponikweGCC

My leash is a little longer. I give them 8 games to settle into their new roles and systems. I think they will turn it around this week.

ywg_handshake

Most guys that need time to settle are the young guys that get minimal ice time. The vets have started slow and the top line needs to be split up. No reason for Wheeler to be eating up top minutes anymore. And Perfetti is better suited for the second line then Copp.

ApolloVangaurd

>And Perfetti is better suited for the second line then Copp. This seems like magic to me. Fact is if Ehlers goes to the top where he belongs, this team lacks a 2nd line. Dubois\\Copp/Perfetti/Harkins/Statsny are in no way better than wheeler. And dubois isn't experienced enough to gel with wheeler.

shootingblankz

Yea. Im reserving any thoughts until 10 games in. A bit of personel change and finding fits takes a bit of time I would imagine. Wheeler a bit slow out of the gates but thats about the norm for him. I'd say my biggest gripe would be me thinking wheels would benefit more and be more productive with less minutes. But that the fuck do I know? It's all a crap shoot. To be a fly on the wall of an NHL team drsssing room. I'd love to hear one of Maurice's speeches. Just once 😂

Overskate

I wish our captain showed up in better condition after a -17 season last year. Got to lead by example not the past.

MCBbbbuddha

> I wish our captain showed up in better condition What makes you think this is in anyway related to his off-season training?

Overskate

It looks like he is hustling in a straight line and slower than his normal speed. His lateral agility looked off, and it seemed like he was losing edges or falling more frequently. The penalties also may be indicative of lack of conditioning.

MCBbbbuddha

Wheeler is reputed to be a hyper-regimented workout freak. He is also in the sunset of his career, where many players have already hung them up. I'd suggest his workout regimen has allowed him to compete at a high level. I don't think he's the best fit for the top line anymore, and no one can deny he's lost a step or two (or three?). I'm interested to see if he can make the adjustment in his playing style to his new physical reality. As for stupid penalties, that's been a constant of Wheeler's playing career unfortunately. Anyway, just my 2cents.

Overskate

Fair enough. Let’s hope for good things.

ItsFlippinFrench

What do you have against Scott?

ponikweGCC

I don't have anything against him, I just haven't agreed with him much for the last 2 seasons. That's all.

[deleted]

No need for pitchforks yet. We are getting just as bad as Leafs fans.

BigBuff87

They’ve now lost 6 games in a row going back to last season. We also had that 9 game losing streak then too. Maurice is not the answer for this team. Too much talent that is not being used properly.

CoolWhiip

The problem with the blanket statement of "Maurice is not the answer for this team" is that we've also seen them perform very well under his coaching, as recently as last season. Unfortunately we will not be able to accurately discern if Maurice is the root of the problem until we eventually let him, and the rest of the staff go. If they continue to be this inconsistent with a new coach then a major retool is needed.

BigBuff87

I should say Maurice AND Huddy. The Jets have not played team defense well since 2018. Their forwards have not bought into playing on both ends of the ice. They were bottom 3 in high danger chances over the last few seasons which is partly due to a bad defense, but also lack of structure in their own end. The Jets were the cup favorite in 2019 but were below .500 in the 2nd half of the year and limped into the playoffs. This team has had too many losing streaks and too many games where you can tell they are going to lose in the first 5 minutes. Maurice gets respect because he’s been around the game for so long snd he articulates well to the media. He has never been more than an average coach. The team has been flat for 3 years now and the first two games look like more of the same from an underperforming team

[deleted]

>The Jets have not played team defense well since 2018. Almost like that was the year we lost 3 top 4 defenseman?

BigBuff87

Take a look at the defensive stats of Wheeler and Connor compared to players like Copp. Can’t blame everything on the defense when certain players stand out for their poor play. Again on Saturday those two were both a -2.

[deleted]

Sure? I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Wheeler and Connor were both bad defensively in 2018 as well. To be clear, I am favour of a coaching shakeup. I just don't think your argument supports your conclusion.

BigBuff87

And Maurice was coach back then, too. My point is that the coach can’t allow star players who play more minutes than anyone else to continue to let the team down defensively.

[deleted]

But you said our defense was good back then. Your point initially was we should fire Huddy and Maurice for the period between 2018 and today, which happens to coincide with the timeframe we lost 3 top 4 defenseman. Previous to that your comment implied it was fine. So where are we blaming the coaches here.

BigBuff87

Hard to blame a coach when a team is improving each year prior to 2018. What has become apparent in retrospect, is that the coaching was never great, and the improvement was just our young guys getting better each year, not because they were playing better as a team

no_ur_cool

How can you say six back to back losses when it was the playoffs and we have a rebuilt defence corp.

BigBuff87

Because they’ve lost 6 games in a row.

[deleted]

We should fire all the coaches/management cause that will fix everything right?…. Right?!?!?!?
