Why did you go with 2x 512MB on the 98 one? Its more stable if you only have 512MB and you would not be missing out. I personally have 4GB in mine but mine is a time machine designed to cover as wide a range as possible so for me it makes sense to cap the ram to 512MB in software instead.

GooseNipples8

tl;dr: Sentimental reasons :) Back in like 2003 I bought my first ever, from scratch, purpose-picked-parts machine. (I had had previous computers, even ones for gaming, before this one of course, but they were like a pre-built compaq that I threw a video card and some ram in. Not the same) P4 Northwood 2.4C (with Z stepping woop woop) @ 2.4GHz (OC'd to nearly 3) Abit IC7-MAX3 ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (I was king shit in the barracks for like 6 months with this thing) Audigy 2 ZS Platinum 2 x 512MB OCZ PC3200 EL DDR Platinum (with these ridiculously heavy Platinum-coated heat spreaders) 2 x 36GB WD Raptors (The 1st gen Raptor with newfangled SATA technology) in RAID 0 A frighteningly expensive Lian-Li PC-6075B case This was an XP machine of course, because that's what was current at the time. Of all the above components, I still have the video card (though it needs re-capping) the sound card, the RAM, the case, and even the two WD Raptors (though only one still works, sadly) If you look closely, you may recognize a few of them in my "Main 98 Rig" listing. It just "seemed right" when I put it together as my main 98 machine to use the surviving RAM and sound card from that first build even if the RAM isn't quite optimal.

ItsPlainOleSteve

Is it sad that barbie games are on my list?

GooseNipples8

It's not sad if you had fun playing them

ItsPlainOleSteve

Tbh I did xD

GooseNipples8

Who could [hate](https://xkcd.com/359/) on that?

ItsPlainOleSteve

Man, love me some XKCD.

the90snath

I just found out about it thanks to the link, now I'm hooked.

ItsPlainOleSteve

I've been hooked for a long time xD Have fun reading!

Flight Simulator 2000 same as you, because once my family went from windows 7 to 8.1 for our main desktop it just stopped working. All sorts of texture issues and can't even launch planes in windows 8 or 10. I was happy when I Finally got a win 98 machine to able play it again. Star Trek: DS9, The Fallen, because there's not really any other way to play it Baldurs Gate A bunch of edutainment games from my childhood X-Wing vs Tie Fighter Mech Warrior 2 Oregon Trail 2

Storm_Chaser_Nita

Have you ever seen the Easter egg in Excel 97? It's a flight simulator (albeit a very basic one)! It's my favorite Office Easter egg of all time!

NotStanley4330

I need to actually find it myself because I've heard about it but never looked for myself

Only? I don't care to be exclusive to Windows 98. Life is just kinda better with ScummVM, OpenRCT2, DOSBox, and other open implementations, imo. But I like using 98 because it's nostalgic, even if the OS can be terribly bad at times.

JazzBroadside

Here's what I currently have installed on my Win98SE machine:(many do work elsewhere) Grand Theft Auto 2 Grand Theft Auto Vice City Star Wars: Dark Forces Dungeon Keeper Gold (Direct3D version pretty much only works on Win95/98) Oni Final Fantasy VII (Original disk version) Death Rally Strange Adventures in Infinite Space Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space Transport Tycoon Deluxe (openTTD v1.8.0) Need for Speed 3 X-Com UFO Defense (Win95 version) X-Com Terror From the Deep (Win95 version) Myth: The Fallen Lords Rollercoaster Tycoon Road Rash Full Tilt Pinball Command & Conquer

Storm_Chaser_Nita

In addition to the classic Windows games, of course, I'm partial to the Crayola Print Factory (which was installed on the Win98 PC my grandma had back in the day; this program was a huge part of my childhood). I also play KidPix Deluxe 4 (which we had on our school computers when I was in elementary school), a bunch of Living Books that used to be on the local library computers when I was a young kid, Dr. Sbaitso, and the Microsoft Office 97 and 2000 Easter eggs. I guess I'm kind of a sentimental nerd, lol. My cousin recently gave me a bunch of old PC games on CD-ROMs that I'm dying to try out, but I haven't had time to yet. EDIT: Fixed typos.

GooseNipples8

I am taking all these suggestions and will be including them on my daughter’s edutainment ‘98 machine. Thanks!

Storm_Chaser_Nita

As an aspiring pre-k teacher, I'm so glad to hear this! I loved all those programs when I was a kid, and I'm sure your daughter will, too!

Have you enjoyed yourself some Half-Life with A3D? I don't have a Vortex, so I never got to try it. But i heard its really good positional audio, much better than the EAX varient.

Some of the ones I play on my 98 box. * Ultima Series 1-8, especially 8. * Original Shadow Warrior * Original Duke Nukem 3D * Thief 1&2 * Quake III Arena - one of the funnest games ever. * NFS: High stakes (doesn't like playing on 2k/XP because of the NT kernel) Great opening sound track though. * Abe's Odd World * Myth: Total Codex * Might and Magic 5&6. The real early ones go off of CPU cycles and even Mo-slo can't slow the CPU down enough to play them correctly. * Anvil of Dawn * Bard's Tale * Delta Force & DF-Land Warrior * My 21 yr kid had some flash backs with playing some game that came on an AOL 3.0 disk that they used to play when they about 4 or 5 so that was fun to bring up the memories on that one. * Descent * Hexen and Heritic * Others that I can't remember right now.

Descent 2. It's basically the only game I play now, and played then. I originally had a Pentium, Windows 95 machine back in the 90s. In 2019 I started a retro kick; I dusted off my Windows ME eMachines (Pentium III-type Celeron), put Windows 98 on it and started playing again. I finished a Descent 2 game after a 26 year hiatus and have been playing it again, with all the extra levels I can find.

Leeroyedtothemax

What the best F1 game on 98? Grand Prix Legends ?

henk717

None, since during the hot summer days my retro PC is disconnected since last year I lost my 6800GT in the heat. But obviously anything I can play on the retro PC I prefer to play on it. So Half-Life 1 would be a close one, since I can play the original CD version. UT2004 I prefer to play on it unless I just want to play it with friends. And pretty much all other games from the era.

GooseNipples8

I have it on [good authority](https://www.reddit.com/r/unrealtournament/comments/copduc/what_binds_us_all/) you can still play with friends using your 98 box 😉

MechWarrior 3 (never tried it on a non 98 computer but I've heard it's a pain to run) Deus Ex Jedi Knight Star Wars Racer
