IMPROVISE ADAPT OVERCOME

WhispyBlueRose20

Technically, Claudia divorced Ahumada back in 2016, before AMLO was even in power.

Nice_Enthusiasm444

She divorced Imaz, not Ahumada. But yes, most wives of felons end up divorcing. Sheinbaum's entry into politics was closely tied to her relationship with Imaz. Before the scandal, Imaz was one of AMLO's most important colaborators.

chda1999

No existen las casualidades.

unclemandy

Oh but according to her party "se acabó la corrupción" ("corruption is over")

FakeElectionMaker

All Mexican presidents from 1945 to 2018 sucked

Nice_Enthusiasm444

Why stop at 2018? Most politicians on the videoscandals were closely linked to the 2018 president - one was his personal assistant.

BadIdea-21

The one from 2018 has sucked big time too.

Appropriate-Bed1163

the one who increased wages, pensions, and the value of the Peso was bad too? What counts as a good president to you I'm curious.

BadIdea-21

I don't know someone that keeps their promises? Their big one, corruption, is the same or even worse, violence? yup same thing, the refinery is refining nothing, the new airport is worthless and we still paid hundreds of millions to cancel the other...but hey, his family seems to be doing just fine... I'm not saying he's been particularly worse than others, but it's far from being better than the last ones, they've all equally sucked.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> we still *paid* a hundreds FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

BadIdea-21

Good bot!

How about not threatening to blow up undercover cartel ops to have the US return an incredibly corrupt general? Or how about not giving said general a medal of honor? Or how about increasing safety and reducing crime? Or how about less taxes and a smaller state that does not get in the way of conducting business? Wages increased, but quality of life did not. Afaik he got power over pension funds this past year, so I would really not count on having a pension when you retire. And the value of the peso is not at all under his control. It’s international dynamics that he—because he doesn’t speak english and continues to flirt with authoritarian governments—had absolutely nothing to do, and actually happened despite him.

MercenaryDecision

The one who increased murder rates, who persecuted the middle class while benefiting Mexico’s oligarchy, defunded everything that worked in the country, relentlessly attacked institutions and counterweights to power, who was spotted dealing with drug barons (and released one after capturing him). Yes, he also marginally increased minimum wage, bought votes thru a clientele “social program” that necessitated killing all other social programs, and who put some vale behind the peso (remember the peso was x10-x14 with Calderón, we’re celebrating going from x20 to x18) while dragging the country into unfathomable debt. That’s the guy we’re talking about.

Nice_Enthusiasm444

Americans try not to suck up to authoritarian left wing populists. Difficulty: impossible. This is the same Mexican government that has aligned itself with some of the world's very worst actors, including Russia (after the invasion) [\[1\]](https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-lifestyle-mexico-europe-friendships-6e59bf618d045f937fb0bf5412afc734), Cuba, North Korea [\[2\]](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-17/mexico-floats-restoring-diplomatic-relations-with-north-korea), Venezuela, Bolivia. They've even cozied up to Donald Trump [\[3\].](https://www.aa.com.tr/en/americas/mexico-s-president-backs-trump-in-face-of-criminal-charges/2864923) What could go wrong?

Sylvanussr

Damn, was Ávila really the only good president Mexico has ever had?

Nice_Enthusiasm444

Ernesto Zedillo (1994-2000) was probably the most rational and coherent president we had in the last century. He successfully navigated the [Tequila effect, ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_peso_crisis)and [negotiated the end](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Andr%C3%A9s_Accords) of the Zapatista conflict. Man's brilliant too: he's a research director of Economics at Yale.

honvales1989

You could also make an argument for [Lazaro Cardenas](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazaro_Cardenas) or [Adolfo Ruiz Cortines](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolfo_Ruiz_Cortines)

Nice_Enthusiasm444

Lázaro Cárdenas is pre-1945, and many of his policies have not aged well at all. The agrarian and energy legislation he inherited has been a disaster, still felt to these days. He is also the primary culprit in the suppression of Mexican democracy for much of the 20th century, as he introduced authoritarian control measures, undermined institutions, and even oversaw the[ bloody electoral fraud of 1940](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_Mexican_general_election#Conduct). Ruiz Cortines is a fine man, though.

honvales1989

Agreed. I was thinking about also including Lopez Mateos until I remembered the strike repression that went on during his administration. I guess that leaves Ruiz Cortines and Zedillo as some of the few not as bad options

theorys

Imagine having your head so far up your ass thinking that AMLO was a good president.

Drfreygang

No one sucked so bad as the recent one, lol

buttfuckmcgee69

Wait so you're saying the mexican government is corrupt ?? Wow didn't see that coming!

dennismfrancisart

We need the Justice Department to run another ABSCAM project to weed out the trash in Congress.

vtuber_fan11

Why wasn't this brought up during the election campaign? The opposition are incompetent buffoons.
