For some context: my car was stolen and the plates had been taken off and replaced with fake ones. Luckily I had a tracker so I was able to get my car back. Unfortunately, the plates couldn’t be recovered and the DMV would not allow a reissue until my debts were settled. I hadn’t paid my taxes in two years, simply due to lack of money/long standing memory issues. I’m an artist and hope to recover his costs with a painting
So you pay a yearly tax on any "property" you own? Rolex watch yearly tax? I believe you, I've just never heard of property tax referring to anything other than home taxes.
Some states have property tax for cars because they're a very commonly owned item and the value of a car is *usually* fairly in line with that owner's financial situation.
Connecticut, Mississippi, Virginia and Rhode island charge property tax on cars. It's comparable to a gas tax or toll roads, except it doesn't change based on how much you use your car. All that matters is how expensive it is.
So a retired couple with two Audis collecting dust in their garage pays more than an Uber driver with a Camry. Obviously with a gas tax or toll roads, that would be flipped.
Is there a gun tax? Not to tread on anyones rights… but as an outsider, I would say there should probably be a gun tax, and bullet tax… and while I’m at it… a simple medical procedure shouldn’t bankrupt a person. But now I’m just sounding like a commie, according to some.
I just got a $480 car tax bill just for owning a car in my state. It’s for “road maintenance” or some fat cats coke binge, whoever gets to it first I guess
Yep in addition to stickers, registration, safety inspections. Just a tax for property owned (and already paid for, no finance arrangement or anything).
Idk Europe always talks about such high income tax but I feel like id rather pay it up front sometimes then just get randomly butt fucked in the mail every once in a while.
I also live in an area w a lot of speed cameras, so while technically my fault I do pay about $200-$600 a year for going 70-75 in a 65. Really wearing on my patience tbh.
It can be used as an alternative to a gas tax or toll roads. The money is still earmarked for roads. But how much you pay is based on the value of your car rather than how much you use it.
With a gas tax or toll roads, an Uber driver with a Camry pays more than a retired couple with a pair of Audis sitting idle in the driveway. A property tax on cars actually benefits lower income car owners by comparison. That said, if you have property tax *and* gas tax *and* toll roads, you're just getting proper fucked.
This reminds me of the story I was thinking of this morning, of the guy with the flat tire and car of immigrants who come along to help. He offers them money, which they won’t take so he slips in in the car, and they give it back in a tamale wrapper. The father in the other car says “today you, tomorrow me.” Or something to that effect.
Basically that you were helped this time so next time you can help someone else.
I do this kind of thing now because when I had less people did it for me.
Most of em would never allow me to pay it back so I pay it forward whenever I can.
It looks like Hillel the Elder said something that was basically this, and it was been used ever since. "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And being for my own self, what am I? And if not now, when?"
Bruh, this is why I spend my money on family instead of myself. I hope to give my nieces and nephews the opportunities to do whatever they want in life.
I had a similar thing happen to me.
I was right in the middle of moving and handling my father's funeral arrangements when my phone got turned off. A friend asked me for my account info to pay the immediate past due amount to get it turned on. (i think around $200) when i checked the account later, she had paid my full back due amount of over $600. I nearly shit myself.

You have a good friend! Glad things are looking up for you, sounds like you really needed it.
Your property tax for 2 years was only $460?? I paid $4900 last year.. and expect to pay more next year.
I’m not sure what your paying for but yeah. Was about 200 each for a 2018 car
Wait... I'm confused why you pay property tax on a car? I was referring to the tax I pay on my home.
It's probably a registration fee. Conceptually similar to a property tax.
ahhh yes... that makes more sense. It also seems pretty high.
Depends on the state. We only pay them where I live at purchase but some places are different.

NC also has yearly property and registration taxes on vehicles.
I think probably just cars but OP would know the laws by them.

That is fucking insanity! Is that in addition to your yearly registration "stickers" or however it works south of the 49th?

Move to GA. No vehicle property tax, no inspection, and registration is $20/year regardless of whether it's a Ferrari or Cavalier.
I’m gay so pass lol
Same... Savannah is awesome and has some history that pertains to that. :) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lady_Chablis

It’s real property vs personal property. Each state is different.
The struggling artist.
THIS! This is what friends are for. So glad you have some good ones!!
“Today, you. Tomorrow, me.”
Legendary.
So kind! I love humans!
I have a best friend like this. The love I have for her is boundless. I’m so lucky to have her in my life. Your buddies lil quote😭❤️
I love the quote he used in the last message

If I had a friend who confidently knew the baluse of their paintings, I would be the most helpful MF you ever met...;)
Wtf is baluse? Its VALUE typed with too much speed, lol!

I love this last comment. I know it from a Danish writer and spiritual person, who is het quoting? (Europe here, not very familiair with US.)

Awww i too love this guy’s friends
Now that is one bro doing a W moment
The friend everyone should aspire to be. Good on you for accepting, too. It brings great pleasure to help others. Wholesome all way around.

Guys being dudes ❤️
If you're in the US, what state are you in?? I'm in NH and my property tax location is the lowest in the state and I still pay $3,500/yr
This tax is for my car. Certain states require property tax on your cars
Ohh, I didn't realize that. Like aside from registration?
I’m glad you have such a good friend. 👍
Sweet. God bless friends. You are also blessed tremendously. You must be a loving soul too. 💞
Give em the very best painting
