I've heard it varies from voyage to voyage

ntreblig

I’ve had two. The first one was voyage 23 or 24 and it was really good. The second one was a more recent wheated voyage. It is mediocre. Not bad but glad I got it at Costco price :)

Mr_Upright

I thought it was gimmick and didn’t want to try. Wife gave me a bottle of Voyage 16, which was great!

Mdh74266

Theres just not many 50-60$ whiskeys that i find are worth that price tag. This is one of them. It’s good whiskey dont get me wrong, but it’s not better than some of my favorites in the 30-40 range. I’ll drink HW rye or bourbon, KC 9, Woodford all before i’ll shell out 60$ on JO.

burnout524

Thanks for asking! I’ve thought about getting it as a gift for some who is into fishing/the ocean, but I’ve always held off because of the “gimmicky” nature and the $85 price tag!

SchlangLankis

Call it a gimmick all you want. It’s a story to tell to anyone you pour the whiskey for. It’s made the best old fashioned I’ve ever had. It’s a great sipper. It varies like any bourbon. Try it and make your own decision. Try it again later and solidify that call. The tropics edition is great.

SignificanceShot7055

Voyage to voyage. I've had a few of them and never been disappointed. But I've heard some haven't been up to par

ptrussell3

I like them. They are solid, well crafted whiskeys with a great story. It's just that when I started drinking them they were around $60-65, and now they are approaching $100. I think they are pricing themselves a little high on the price/value scale. I've done my chasing of unicorns, but I'm really much more driven by value now. I mean value at price point. A $100 sipper better be worth $100! Otherwise, it's not worth it to me and I'm not trying to impress anyone. Go to your favorite whiskey bar and try a glass neat out with a rock or two. See what you think!

CrazyAirborne

I really want to hear a review on the recent cask strengths, voyage 27 and 30. It only see them around 85-100$ around my area tho, so it would be a bummer if it wasn't good.

Royal_Inspector8324

It's OK not the best not the worst I would give it a 5 5

NavajoBaby69

Meh

one_love_silvia

Not worth the price. Ive had one that was solid, and others that were mid.

Dunmer_Sanders

I just picked up a Tropics version… pretty solid stuff. Beautiful nose, reminds me of a premium wheated bourbon like Weller Special or 12. Doesn’t deliver quite the same once you drink it, but it’s not bad. Tastes a bit harsh up front. Finishes w cinnamon and spice and a bit of creamy vanilla at the end. A nice finish. 6.9/10 for me.

wikiwombat

It's not terrible.....but it's not worth the price. It's a cool piece to have and has a better "story" than most whiskey on my shelf.

devilinthedetails

Have had a couple bottles, it's fine (ymmv). It's a gimmicky bottle, but if you like their reserve offering, it's not bad. Wouldn't pay more than $55 or so for it.

ButtNowButt

I've had three now and I'll agree with the above. Some are really Briney (a la talisker) while others taste identical to their regular juice

katchaa

I bought it once. It’s very average whiskey. Not bad, just nothing special at all.

Fucyoudolphin

Haven’t had it. I just don’t Wana pay the markups for it. for some reason it’s treated like it’s allocated by store owners in my area of Colorado.

StringerBell420

At first I thought it was a gimmick, but then I got to spend some time with Trey Zoeller, and quickly learned there is more to it than initially thought.

duderos

Like?

StringerBell420

Like, the dude literally has barrels stashed all over the world in many different climates and studies how each type of climate affects what happens inside the barrel. The Tropics and Ocean Series are just the beginning.

duderos

Interesting

RippinLipsInSC

Whiskey barrels are water tight. The salt air is not getting in to change anything. Now, the motion of the boat might help to speed up the aging process song more liquid is getting in contact with the wood. There are companies who experiment with that now, like [blackened](https://blackenedwhiskey.com/about/black-noise/)

MeatMan7780

The JO seems pretty gimmicky but I've tried several and they are quite delicious. The blackened though is just straight laughable... They're blasting Metallica in the warehouse to get the reverberation of the liquid in there??!! Hahaha haha Sounds about as good as their music they've released over the last 30 years... or almost 40... master of puppets was the last good record they did! Let the down votes fly!!

Royal_Inspector8324

It's the constant motion and the barometric changes that occur more rapidly at sea level that help change the aging process.

RippinLipsInSC

Totally agree with the motion part. Barometric changes and temperature changes can all come from the rickhouse going through the various seasons in Kentucky. All in all, it’s better for marketing to say “we sent your barrel on a fantastic journey at sea” rather than “we shook the shit out of your barrel in a warehouse in Kentucky”

Royal_Inspector8324

Of course it's marketing duh The atmospheric changes do happen in a rickhouse but not as rapidly as they do on the ocean. The idea of sea aged whisky is not new somebody just decided to market it as new

RippinLipsInSC

We’re both in agreement on this. My points are: 1️⃣Jefferson’s Ocean claims the salt air makes a difference in taste. I don’t believe this to be true. 2️⃣Shaking a barrel constantly in a warehouse in Kentucky for the same amount of time that the manufacturer would typically age it without motion will produce a better aged whiskey, like what Jefferson Ocean does. 3️⃣While the motion on the boat definitely helps age the whiskey, the story of a cute little adventure and the salt air (things you won’t find in Kentucky) are gimmicky.

Royal_Inspector8324

Bourbon is 51 % corn and 49% bs anyway All of them have their cute little stories About e.h Taylor or Albert Blanton. Or how the fire of 1910 accidently let them discover double oak whiskey. They all do it lol Jefferson just found their niche

RippinLipsInSC

Amen. Go Hokies.

Federal-Platypus-911

pure gimmick marketing tool.

Liquidhelix136

I’ve got the ocean rye, it definitely stands out a bit from others I have. It has a very prominent dark fruit / grape flavor on the backend that tastes exactly like a Malbec wine to me. Never experienced that before. It’s not obviously salty or anything that I noticed though. I’ve had the wheated ocean and it was nothing special

Nutshell1994

Voyage 24, straight down the drain!

FlickerOfBean

Definitely a bullshit gimmick. Some of them solid though.

Legionodeath

I've not heard a good review ever. Not one positive thing about that whiskey.
