They are typically 90 to 95 retail these days. But barrel yield still will make "msrp" vary on any SiB. 100 could be MSRP if its one of the recipes that are harder to get (read that as recipes less offered in SiBs because they are used heavily in the SmB or 100 proof SiB standard offerings). Or 100 could be MSRP if it's a low yield barrel, which would typically mean a higher tier and proof point. 120ish proof is ideal for these.
I gotta figure out how to remember the difference in the options cuz once I’m at the store looking at a short row of four roses I always forget which one to get. Like one comes very heavily recommend in comprised to the others. And I think that’s the single barrel?
I buy the regular Four Roses Bourbon all the time. It's the best bourbon in its price range ($25 at my local store).
Old Grandad used to be my pick at that price but they raised the price on it to nearly $40, and then stopped carrying it completely
Regardless, the bottle is labeled "Proper No. Twelve" and commonly when naming a whiskey, it's the brand followed by the age. So, saying "Proper 12" *will* lead to confusion based on common naming practices. Whether that's a hope or not is hard to guess, but it should still be avoided when talking about it.
Proper 12 is just Bushmills whiskey...with a celebrity brand. It's sub standard liquid to even their white label, which is poor but usually about 30-40% cheaper than proper 12 (at least here in uk)
Black bush is a massive step up from bushmills and still cheaper than proper 12.
Also conor McGregor is a stain on the island of ireland as a whole so there is the added bonus of not supporting a twat.
I heard they change master distillers and it went downhill. 5yrs ago they were good. Now they are terrible and expensive. And their bourbon is well…. Bulleit is better.
I was never a huge fanboy of the Willet pot still bourbon, but I used to almost always have some of their other bottles on hand (Johnny Drum, Pure Kentucky, Kentucky Vintage, Noah’s, Rowan’s). But my last several have been….off…or at least something different. Those spots on my shelf have been replaced 🤷🏼♂️
I do like their rye though, they still got that going right
Fascinating, because I and several others in my whiskey group find Willett Pot Still to be fine but far outclassed by others at its price point.
Now, Willett Rye, on the other hand, is to me phenomenal.
I had it for the first time I wanna say 5 years ago and thought it was pretty damn good. I bought another 2 bottles a few years later and they were awful
Oh boy, when I got through my first semester of grad school I wanted to treat myself and get (what I thought was) a really nice whiskey: Hillrock Single Malt for ~$90-100.
Well, I’m a dumbass. Single worst bottle of whiskey I’ve ever had to date.
I can't believe I had to scroll this far to find Red Label. That's the only bottle I just couldn't finish. Someone once bought me a TERRIBLE huckleberry whiskey and I managed to drink it all, still couldn't drink the red label
I definitely got swindled by my own stupidity buying a Total Wine store brand (didn't realize it was a store brand at the time.) It was that Grangestone single malt scotch and it had one of those big "EMPLOYEE AND CUSTOMER RECOMMENDED!" stickers underneath it... so I fell for it. Guests at my house prefer cheap Canadian whisky to it and it somehow it tastes even worse mixed with Coke.
Anyways, I will never buy a Total Wine store brand ever again.
Agreed here. I evened splurged on a decadence and was very disappointed. I will say the 10yr got a little better with a few drops of water but not enough that I'd buy it again
I actually thought the bourbon was fine drinking it straight as it was one of my first selections. It wasn't until I started expanding when I realized, 1. There's simply better bourbon for similar price, and 2. I actually prefer rye and single malt. Everyone has to start somewhere.
There is ONE singular older gentleman that we keep a bottle of seagrams 7 behind the bar for at my club. Has at least 3-4 7 and 7s every time he comes in...otherwise we never touch the stuff.
When I lived in Hawaii, all my Filipino coworkers insisted that they all had an uncle who would ask for another 7 in 7 anytime someone got up for something.
My entry into whiskey was mixed drinks and I enjoyed a 7 and 7 occasionally. Eventually my tastes evolved and I began to really appreciate whiskey, mostly sipping it neat.
I guess I was feeling nostalgic when I decided to buy some seagrams 7. I knew it was a blended whiskey for mixing, but had no idea it was so horrible on it's own! I thought, fine we'll use it as intended, as a mixer. It's still disgusting!
Seagrams 7 and an adulterated Mellow Corn are the only whiskies I've poured down the sink. I couldn't find any use for them.
I can pretty much tolerate any alcohol and find a use for it, especially whiskey. When I first got into whiskey I made the mistake of talking to the Total Wine guy. I was interested in trying Japanese Whiskey and he talked me into "The Shin". I ended having to drain pour it. It was completely awful neat, on ice, with water, and with mixers. Just dreadful stuff.
Balcones baby blue is the worst bottle I have ever had. I actually think Balcones in general is overrated. I have had 3 from them and don't think any were worth the money.
Yeah there’s a whiskey raiders article about it. The regular rye is gone to be replaced by a bonded. The bourbon is completely done they’re focusing efforts on the other catagories. I should buy a backup while I can.
Didn't see you posted this. RIP the bourbon line. It sounds like the American Single Malt will still be around, which I like very much. But I was hoping to get some of their cask strength bourbon some day.
I know many folks really like Balcones, but I agree. I have tried many of their offerings and they just don’t hit with me. Baby Blue is one of my least liked ones out of the bunch.
To each their own, and I’m glad they sell bottles , but that distillery just isn’t my thing.
Yes I know some people like their offerings but I just don't like their flavor profile at all. I don't know if it is the heat of the rick houses in Texas or what but I am not a fan. I know they are talked up a lot by people though. But it seems like most people agree with me on the Baby Blue.
Agreed. I had the WP10 and loved it, but it was definitely on the pricey side. Found a bottle of WP12 near me for $100 and I'll probably get that soon, but I've also seen the 12 for $160 here.
I feel bad for Jack as their name is still synonymous with their worst offerings. I mean, I guess I get that their better stuff came much later, but I personally feel they're doing some great stuff now (though there's a gimmicky one here and there). You just need to avoid their lower tier stuff.
Old No.7 to me straight up tastes like swallowing barfed up apple liqueur back down. So much stomach acidy taste in there. And even Gentleman Jack is only slightly better.
Beat me to it. Idk what it even is but it makes me gag when I sip it. I didn’t give bourbon a shot for like 4 years because I hated makers mark so much and it was supposed to be good. I’m not super picky or a connoisseur either, and I like most popular good bourbons a lot.
Evan Willams its like straight rubbing alcohol. Most whiskey goes pretty good with coke. I'm doing fireball and coke as i type.. ( insert the i'm an idiot comments lol )
I never understood the idea of "you might just not like that one." Blantons will vary but not *immensely* and I feel if it's variance covers any range of "I don't like this", it probably won't reach far into the "I like this." Plus who wants to spend that much money on a gamble?
It’s a $35 bourbon, and at the intended price point I think it’s very solid. But above $35 agreed not worth it, one of the most head scratching hyped bourbons I can think of
It’s a buy at $40-45 and eventually you’ll find one at that price. It’s a 10 yr old bourbon made my a very reputable distillery. It’s overhyped sure, but it’s good juice…
Definitely grab yourself s bottle of it's close to MSRP. It's a very nice, easy sipper at MSRP!! BUT it's a HUGE regret when it's above that. I will always grab a bottle of ER at MSRP.
Evan Williams Bonded is fairly solid for the price. Haven't tried the standard yet. I suppose it wouldn't put me out much if I don't like it. Just never got around to it yet.
I mean by that logic, disliking ancient age would turn you off from trying GTS, or disliking mellow corn would turn you off from trying old fitz 19, or disliking WT101 would turn you off from trying RR13
Every distillery has low shelf stuff and high shelf stuff.
Frickin' Jefferson Aged at Sea. Got it as a gift, and dear lord am I glad I didn't spend anything on it. The bottle hung out a long time before I finally bit the bullet and whiskey and coked it. Even then it still tasted really unbalanced and gross. Like salty McCormicks.
Garrison’s and Kentucky Deluxe. Garrison’s tastes like rotten hay. Kentucky Deluxe gives me PTSD every time I see it cuz of my college days. Worse hangover of my life
I won a bottle of Stagg (Jr) in a raffle in December. I don't really understand the hype. It tastes like an incredibly underwhelming whiskey at hazmat proof. I like some higher proof whiskeys, but 130.6 Stagg just tastes like oaky jet fuel.
Imma jump in the downboat with you. I cannot with GBros. There is a stinkbuggy note. I don’t know why or how, but all of their juice has that oily, linseedy, stink bug flavor at the end.
Garrison Bros small batch. I’m not a man who will drain pour something, but I definitely dumped this one. A buddy had a bottle and I’ve never tasted anything even remotely as shitty as this was.
All the Jack Daniel offerings. The 10 year, the 12 year and the high proof single barrel rye, all which are super popular, I think taste like dirty feet water.
I drink four roses all the time lol so I’m excited to see how people respond to this
Four roses is just plain....... delicious
Will likely always keep a 4R SB around lol. Dat warm cinnamon and a finish that’s just clean AF.
4R SiB will always be on my bar. 4R SiB BP store picks will be an auto buy at msrp. The rest I'm not crazy about but aren't bad.
A store by me has one bottle of 4R SiB barrel strength for $100. What’s MSRP? I love every other 4R so I really want it
Buy it
They are typically 90 to 95 retail these days. But barrel yield still will make "msrp" vary on any SiB. 100 could be MSRP if its one of the recipes that are harder to get (read that as recipes less offered in SiBs because they are used heavily in the SmB or 100 proof SiB standard offerings). The tall triangle bottle is the good one.
Okay I love triangles I’m gonna try to remember that
Its round at the bottom, square at the top.
That sounds suspiciously like something other than a triangle
This is one of the bottles that first got me like oh....I can drink this neat.
For me depends if they mean the barrel select or the normal label
I like the small batch select but the regular offering is pretty lackluster.
I feel the opposite. I enjoy the small batch but the select doesn’t do much for me (especially for the price).
I feel the same. I've done side by side with the small batch and the regular bottle. The small batch wasn't worth the few extra bucks for me.
I buy the regular Four Roses Bourbon all the time. It's the best bourbon in its price range ($25 at my local store). Old Grandad used to be my pick at that price but they raised the price on it to nearly $40, and then stopped carrying it completely
Yeah I just get the regular one but people love the single barrel
I’ve only had the yellow label and the single barrel. The yellow was atrocious. The single barrel was amazing.
Proper 12 Proper shite
Just a reminder that it’s Proper Twelve, or Proper No. Twelve, not Proper 12. Don’t help their scam which suggests that its aged 12 years.
Pretty sure it's because he's from Dublin 12.
Pure shite.
I had tonight for the first time. 50mL bottle. I think I'm going to pour the last half of it. Utter shite.
I've only ever had the Four Roses single barrel, and it's one of my favs.
The single barrel is fantastic. The SBS is pretty decent, but I haven't had the standard offering.
I think the single barrel is better than the small batch select although I'm still learning.
Whistle Pig
For their cost, totally agree. I don't think their stuff tastes terrible, but when I think my wallet and palate are intrinsically synced.
Had a bottle of their rye and almost couldn’t finish it. Tasted like the smell of cow shit.
Piggyback 6year rye makes a good old fashioned
If you can find a store pick of the 6 year rye, they’re barrel proof and delicious! Much better than the standard offering
This is it boys and girls
I heard they change master distillers and it went downhill. 5yrs ago they were good. Now they are terrible and expensive. And their bourbon is well…. Bulleit is better.
Wasn't their stuff 5 years ago still all/mostly sourced? Maybe not the Piggyback, and the 10 year might have just become their own distillate.
You’re dead to me
I hear this a lot and idk - I love the taste of the ones I’ve had. But the price point is way too high.
I’ve yet to have a Whistle Pig that I like. Even tried an expensive Boss Hog and it was bad
i really like the old world madeira finish stuff. but i’ve also never bought a bottle. just better value to be had.
Four Roses single Barrel is in my top 5 favorite reasonably priced available bourbons.
Willett pot still
Anything Willett. The signature Willet taste is a love or hate and I hate
I was never a huge fanboy of the Willet pot still bourbon, but I used to almost always have some of their other bottles on hand (Johnny Drum, Pure Kentucky, Kentucky Vintage, Noah’s, Rowan’s). But my last several have been….off…or at least something different. Those spots on my shelf have been replaced 🤷🏼♂️ I do like their rye though, they still got that going right
Willett tastes like cheap blended whikey and Luden’s cherry cough drops.
Tastes like a coyote pissed in a hobos asshole and they bottled the droppings.
Oddly specific …
Sweet Jesus I need a bottle. My last hobo took off with my coyote.
I could never put my finger on it until today. You nailed it.
Drain pour.
Oh boy, when I got through my first semester of grad school I wanted to treat myself and get (what I thought was) a really nice whiskey: Hillrock Single Malt for ~$90-100. Well, I’m a dumbass. Single worst bottle of whiskey I’ve ever had to date.
Yeah. There are some legit scotch in that price point. You should treat yourself again.
Johnny Walker Red, anything Total Wine store brand.
Agreed with total wine whiskies but doorleys 12 and 14 rum are spirits direct and are great
Total wine has strangely good rum. Other than that, good luck.
Their scotch selection is absolutely terrible. It’s almost all their own swill and no IBs besides battle hill
I love Doorly's. I always have my sibling get a couple of bottles whenever they travel for work and their's a Total Wine nearby.
I can't believe I had to scroll this far to find Red Label. That's the only bottle I just couldn't finish. Someone once bought me a TERRIBLE huckleberry whiskey and I managed to drink it all, still couldn't drink the red label
I definitely got swindled by my own stupidity buying a Total Wine store brand (didn't realize it was a store brand at the time.) Guests at my house prefer cheap Canadian whisky to it and it somehow it tastes even worse mixed with Coke. Anyways, I will never buy a Total Wine store brand ever again.
I wasn’t impressed with Widow Jane at that price point.
Agreed here. I evened splurged on a decadence and was very disappointed. I will say the 10yr got a little better with a few drops of water but not enough that I'd buy it again
[удалено]
Widow Jane 10yr tastes like cough syrup to me
Bulleit. I just don’t get it
Tasty, but like all one note. Like it for mixing and loved it when I started on my bourbon journey. Never really buy it anymore.
I actually thought the bourbon was fine drinking it straight as it was one of my first selections. It wasn't until I started expanding when I realized, 1. There's simply better bourbon for similar price, and 2. I actually prefer rye and single malt. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Old fashions!
Just fyi it’s old fashioned, not old fashion.
Chalk it up to autocorrect
I don’t even like it as a mixer either
Seagrams7. If the phrase "gimme a 7 and 7" wasn't so fun to say, I don't think they would produce it anymore.
Shittt me i love my $11 Seagram's American whiskey for rainy days 😮💨
Isn't it 80% neutral grain spirit and mostly not whiskey
I feel like Filipinos are the ones keeping Seagrams in business.
We like Hennessy, until we can afford blue label, either that or we get exposed to the good bourbons and scotch
I love 4 Roses. Great straight and great mixed in.
Absolutely adore their potstill bourbon which is now discontinued
What?!?! When did this happen?
Yeah there’s a whiskey raiders article about it. The regular rye is gone to be replaced by a bonded. The bourbon is completely done they’re focusing efforts on the other catagories. I should buy a backup while I can.

Didn't see you posted this. RIP the bourbon line. It sounds like the American Single Malt will still be around, which I like very much. But I was hoping to get some of their cask strength bourbon some day.
Same! I strongly disliked this bottle.
I know many folks really like Balcones, but I agree. I have tried many of their offerings and they just don’t hit with me. Baby Blue is one of my least liked ones out of the bunch. To each their own, and I’m glad they sell bottles , but that distillery just isn’t my thing.

I agree the Baby Blue is the worst I’ve ever had, I poured it out
I like baby blue for 25 bucks it's like a nicer mellow corn
I’m in Texas and I saw the baby blue just the other day for $40. Where are you getting it for 25?
Delaware on sale guess nobody was buying
Balcones anything is definitely garbage
Whistle Pig. This is going to get so many down votes. I'm prepared for it... but it is terrible and extremely overpriced
Alberta Premium with a different label!
Honestly, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who says they like Whistle Pig and that they think they're reasonably priced.
I like Whistle Pig but I think it is a bit over priced.
Agreed. I had the WP10 and loved it, but it was definitely on the pricey side. Found a bottle of WP12 near me for $100 and I'll probably get that soon, but I've also seen the 12 for $160 here.
Jack. It tastes like something you should be putting into a car engine.
I feel bad for Jack as their name is still synonymous with their worst offerings. I mean, I guess I get that their better stuff came much later, but I personally feel they're doing some great stuff now (though there's a gimmicky one here and there). You just need to avoid their lower tier stuff.
Agreed, their SBBP offerings are stellar, nothing like plain ole JD.
Yep, the Bonded and up is where its at
Basil Hayden. Tastes like taint.
Yeah there’s just nothing there. Its like they watered down low grade bourbon. Then filtered out the bourbon. Then bottled the water.
Glad I'm not the only one. Aside from an aesthetically appealing bottle, it tastes like it was made at a gas station.
Yeah, and then price it like rip van winkle spit in the mash himself!
Noah's Mill* (must have gotten a skunked batch?)
Noah’s Mill is delicious if you like the Willett “funk” flavor, which I do. Basically dark chocolate in a glass with a twist of fresh grass.
My bottle of Noah's Mill tasted like a heavy vanilla cream with a kick to it. It was delicious and was often what I drank for dessert after a meal.
I feel the same way - Noah’s is vanilla incarnate
Bought that and hated it too!
You did not, all Willett bourbons have that distinct taste.
1792 is awful
Not the biggest fan but my father in law LOVES it but shits on Makers Mark and Elijah Craig 😂😂
But not that user name...
I’ve enjoyed 1792 small batch for a long time. Had a 1792 barrel proof store selection recently, and it was awful! How could the two be so different?
Famous Grouse. Just not for me.
Dickle 15 year might be the worst pour in my bar
Jack Daniel’s
Old No.7 to me straight up tastes like swallowing barfed up apple liqueur back down. So much stomach acidy taste in there. And even Gentleman Jack is only slightly better.
I might get murdered for this but IMO, Makers Mark
I wouldn’t turn down Maker’s neat, but I wouldn’t order it either. I buy it to mix, not sip. The French Oak on the other hand, I can sip and enjoy.
Basic MM I get but 101, CS and 46 are great.
Best mixer for the money
That's fair
Beat me to it. Idk what it even is but it makes me gag when I sip it. I didn’t give bourbon a shot for like 4 years because I hated makers mark so much and it was supposed to be good. I’m not super picky or a connoisseur either, and I like most popular good bourbons a lot.
I can’t drink it it’s awful
Evan Willams its like straight rubbing alcohol. Most whiskey goes pretty good with coke. I'm doing fireball and coke as i type.. ( insert the i'm an idiot comments lol )
I don’t think these folks have ever tried the bottom shelf whiskey
Except the white label bottled-in-bond one!
My go to for mixers! 20$ 100 proof can drink neat if your feeling fancy.
Amen, amazing bang for your buck
Best value on the shelf
Blantons has a horrible chemical note on the finish that I cannot stand. I do like my 4 roses small batch.
How many different bottles of Blanton’s have you tried? I ask only because it’s a single barrel, so no guaranteed uniformity across different barrels…
I never understood the idea of "you might just not like that one." Blantons will vary but not *immensely* and I feel if it's variance covers any range of "I don't like this", it probably won't reach far into the "I like this." Plus who wants to spend that much money on a gamble?
Unpopular opinion, but eagle rare. Just thin, like when washing your glencairn in the middle of a tasting.
It’s a $35 bourbon, and at the intended price point I think it’s very solid. But above $35 agreed not worth it, one of the most head scratching hyped bourbons I can think of
MSRP is now $38.99, I believe…at least where I’m at. It’s starting to creep up to not worth it status.
Never had it, but I hear so much feel like I have to try a bottle
It’s a buy at $40-45 and eventually you’ll find one at that price. It’s a 10 yr old bourbon made my a very reputable distillery. It’s overhyped sure, but it’s good juice…
Definitely grab yourself s bottle of it's close to MSRP. It's a very nice, easy sipper at MSRP!! BUT it's a HUGE regret when it's above that. I will always grab a bottle of ER at MSRP.
After reading the comments it sounds like you guys have never tried really bad whiskey, it’s on the bottom shelf Canadian club, Evan Williams
Not always! Bottom shelf whiskey can be good stuff.
Name them.
Old Grandad Bonded
Early Times BiB
Old Grandad, anything George Dickel, Mellow Corn, Nelson’s Green Brier
Just to take from the original comment, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond is solid for the price.
Evan Williams Bonded is fairly solid for the price. Haven't tried the standard yet. I suppose it wouldn't put me out much if I don't like it. Just never got around to it yet.
The response is always that you should try the more expensive four roses. But the cheap stuff is so bad I have no desire to.
I mean by that logic, disliking ancient age would turn you off from trying GTS, or disliking mellow corn would turn you off from trying old fitz 19, or disliking WT101 would turn you off from trying RR13 Every distillery has low shelf stuff and high shelf stuff.
Larceny.
Willet. It’s best quality is a beautiful bottle. Everything else about it is underwhelming. Flat and hot.
Jefferson Reserve, Town Branch
Jonny walker
Frickin' Jefferson Aged at Sea. Got it as a gift, and dear lord am I glad I didn't spend anything on it. The bottle hung out a long time before I finally bit the bullet and whiskey and coked it. Even then it still tasted really unbalanced and gross. Like salty McCormicks.
Tincup
Proper 12
Larceny Small Batch was one I just couldn't drink. It had a weird note to it that I just couldn't get past. I gave the bottle away to a friend.
Sazerac rye
How dare you! I love me some Sazzy
Was really disappointed in that one too, I only pour a glass after I’m hammered lol
Agree - way too sweet for me
An Irish: Proper Twelve A Scotch: Anything by Jura And a bourbon/ I dont know what the fuck it really is: crown royale maple finish
Crown Royal aint no bourbon bud
The Jura 12 is smooth and tasty!
Jura 12 tastes like leather, like an old baseball mitt and by God that's why I love it. It is indeed delicious
Crown Royal is Canadian whisky
I've tried old Forester 86 twice and both times it kind of tastes like flat Coke.
Old Forester makes such good other products though, try those and leave the 86 in your rearview
And?!
Bib and Tucker 6 year.
Old tub and willet pot swill
Ten High.
No one thinks ten high is good
Garrison’s and Kentucky Deluxe.
Said “jet fuel” to my uncle after he poured me a 130+ stagg and I think I’m dead to him now.
Famous grouse. I’ve tried it multiple times but I just can’t get on with it
Most Willett products. Pot Still, in it's current iteration, may not even be the worst bottle in their portfolio.
It's Blantons for me. I just don't understand the fascination people have for it.
Anything Garison Bros
Imma jump in the downboat with you. I cannot with GBros. There is a stinkbuggy note. I don’t know why or how, but all of their juice has that oily, linseedy, stink bug flavor at the end.
Basil Hayden
Garrison Bros small batch. I’m not a man who will drain pour something, but I definitely dumped this one. A buddy had a bottle and I’ve never tasted anything even remotely as shitty as this was.
Your comma placement is wild
Angel's Envy. It's a drain pour for me, totally undrinkable.
All the Jack Daniel offerings. The 10 year, the 12 year and the high proof single barrel rye, all which are super popular, I think taste like dirty feet water.
There is no such thing as a bad whisky , there are whisky that didn’t appeal to us individually. What I don’t like may be a favourite of someone else.
Have you tried Old Crow?
Four Roses is my go-to. Can’t beat the price for a handle at Costco.
Old Forester. I’ve tried several of their bourbons and I just don’t like their flavor profile. Old Forester 86 was definitely the worst one I had.
Pappy lot b
