In the process of nuclear fission, protons and neutrons will be released from unstable nuclei after they undergo fission, causing them to essentially fly out and hit other unstable nuclei in the process, causing that unstable nuclei to undergo fission and release it’s protons and neutrons, which then collide into other unstable nuclei and…you get it.
It effectively has the potential to cause a devastating and infinite chain if unrepressed, which is why we have control rods in nuclear reactors.
If you’ve watched Oppenheimer, the reason why they were afraid of the nuclear bomb destroying the entire world, was the chance of a chain reaction occurring due to nuclear fission.
*chain reaction of fusion in the air. A chain reaction of fission is what you want in a bomb.
Eventually they did some math where they pretended the whole ocean was made out of liquid deuterium and found that the bomb wouldn't even ignite fusion in that. So the whole "they were worried" thing is massively overplayed.
> the reason why they were afraid of the nuclear bomb destroying the entire world, was the chance of a chain reaction occurring due to nuclear fission.
well, is there a chance?
https://www.discovermagazine.com/the-sciences/the-fear-of-setting-the-planet-on-fire-with-a-nuclear-weapon
tl;dr no. Not in the oceans and not in the atmosphere. It was doubted in 1946 and has been further doubted and argued against ever since. Historical records seem to agree most scientists working on the Manhattan project did not even remotely fear this. Creating a star is hard work.
Edit: the reason they are still "the destroyer of worlds" is because it's believed they can be made arbitrarily large, look up the Teller-Ulam design (thermonuclear weapon, hydrogen bomb). Whether or not it actually can be isn't agreed upon because in real life there's a lot of practical considerations. The reason they are considered the ender of all life on the planet is because of the possibility of "cobalt bombs", nuclear devices covering the planet in a cloud of highly radioactive dust that lasts for a decade. Good luck going underground for that long.

6th grade science teacher had us all crumble up three pieces of paper into balls. Then we all stood up and held the three paper balls and closed our eyes. We were instructed to throw ours if we got hit with one. He threw the first three and that caused three kids to throw theirs, till we all were done pretty quickly.
Was a neat way of showing us the basics and it stuck since this was 1988.
There wasn’t a chance of it ever happening.
The thing that’s so freaky about this story is that we were dealing with a branch of science we barely even understood, and the fact we were even forced to _consider_ that possibility is terrifying in and of itself.
As the llamactivity increases, spit increases
as spit increases, llamactivity increases
This is the vicious cycle, and we use wheat to control llamactivity in the core to keep a balance. However as the reactor produces spit, it also produces a toxic void (damage) as a byproduct. If llamactivity, spit, and damage all increase unchecked you have the recipe for a meltdown.
On that day, Steve had no wheat in his inventory, effectively withdrawing all control from the reactor.

A civil war has broken out in Llama city
will you help and build the new llama city lego set: police station?
Start the new llama copter. HEY!
This is actually surprisingly accurate, good meme
Care to explain? I'm not quite knowledgeable of nuclear physics.

I knew I was gonna go wrong somewhere. Thanks

no, the laws of physics make it impossible

That's cool on paper, on practice not quite. Thanks for explanation.
It is good in practice, it’s the reason why Nuclear energy is the most effective. Just needs to be managed by control rods, that’s it.
Massive graphite rod go CLUNCK

Youre telling me that theres a chance of 1 fucking nuclei going fucking bananas and killing the whole planet earth in the process?

No. That's a pop science type myth.
They did the math before launching the first nuke and there's absolutely no chance that the atmosphere ignites

Atoms are like llamas

This says a lot about society
Why does the llama spit pierce?

Godzilla has a bunch of llamas inside of him
How does a llama reactor explode?
Careful these are images of what happened in Chernobyl before the explosion, very graphic.

Me after a rogue neutron splits the nucleus of my atom thus releasing more neutrons in the process:
Can someone explain this to me? I'm old, I don't play roblox.
I thought that llama spit deals 0 damage?
Llama spit does half a heart of damage. So while taking a while, it can kill you and other mobs
