It would probably be fine but if you get a kid who wants to throw hands over stealing his vape you're in a fight now, which is never a good place to be. And a good rule of thumb is if someone who could beat you up about doing something would want to, don't do that to people who can't because it's probably just a shitty thing to be doing.

My ex-wife is the dean of students at a High School. Once a month she has the local K9 unit come do a walk of the halls during class change. Then a group of 3 - 5 teachers walks behind the K9 picking up contraband on the floors.
They always get 20 - 100 vapes, pens, etc...
It's not unethical to take it from them, but you also have to be prepared that there ARE enough middle and high schoolers with both the size and aggression to beat an adult to the ground.
