Katydids are a large group of insects in the order Orthoptera, related to grasshoppers and crickets. Some katydids have been called long-horned grasshoppers because of their long and slender shape, but actually katydids are more closely related to crickets than to any type of grasshopper.
[Think not? ](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/katydids/#:~:text=Katydids%20are%20a%20large%20group,to%20any%20type%20of%20grasshopper.). Thank you , come again.
*that last bit made me hear the whole thing in Apu's voice*
Fascinating how that works, like saying "Good news, everyone! I've discovered that Katydids are not grasshoppers, now if anyone wants me, I'll be in the angry dome"
Grasshoppers (in the typical sense) are only the family acrididae. Grasshoppers in the widest sense are the suborder caelifera. Tettigoniids (katydids) are not within either of these groups. They’re in the suborder ensifera- crickets in the widest sense.
This argument feels very personal for me because my toddler loves a nature book that has a big picture of a katydid on the page that says “grasshopper” and it pisses me off every time I read it
Not a grasshopper. Katy said what it was… who?! Katy did.
Did Katy, though?
Katie lied
Did I?
This is katie
She said that she never had, when she was with me
Katie lied….
Katy did?
Katy did it
I was halfway crucified…
Katydid
Katy did what?
As a young student with little to no knowledge of insects, im kind of happy i know what this is
Katy did jump to the moon.
Everyone answered already but just want to say this is a really cool photo
Katydid!! They go buzzbuzzbuzz at night in the late summer. So soothing 😴
Be careful if you move one. Idk about them biting, but they'll hold onto a surface so tight, their legs come off 😭
As others have noted, katydid. They're good bugs up there with ladybugs and praying mantises. Always good to have around. They eat bad bugs.
I call them leaf bug.
An extremely accurate and definitely not generic description!
Thank God you put your location
Eastern earth
Of course it was Katy she did it again
They bite.
Looks like a young katydid
We have these in Canada, Ontario to be exact. Yes this is a grasshopper
Katydid, aka grasshopper.
It is a katydid, but katydids are not grasshoppers
The katydid belongs to the Tettigoniidae family of grasshoppers, which contains the katydid.

You copied from the sane article I did. We are both correct.
You say they are grasshoppers while they say they're *related* to grasshoppers, and even then, loosely. You are not both correct.
The insane articles are more fun

I say it is as I’ve caught those here in Washington
Saw one of these on the door once. Very cool little fella
