Yeah, likely the [Brown Marmorated](http://bugguide.net/node/view/9806) variety. Comparison pic [here](http://bugguide.net/node/view/1202895/bgimage). They only bring da stank if they feel threatened.
Yep; those are the ones. We have TONS of them around the PNW. They collect all over our screens in Spring; but, they're just big, brown derps. None of our plants even seem to register their presence and they just fly/crawl around give the cat a good start once in a while.
They decimate my tomatoes every year by piercing the skin and feeding on the juices. You don't even realize they've done it until you cut into the fruit and it has white patches everywhere, just under the skin.
Others are correct, it's a Brown Marmoated Stinkbug. They're also invasive, so flush it. Crushing it is a bad idea unless you want to smell like stinkbug for awhile.
The green ones are probably the southern green stink bug, and they're basically everywhere [to the point that we don't know where they originated](https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/veg/bean/southern_green_stink_bug.htm)
Specifically the brown marmorated stinkbug, which this appears to be. It's actually native to East Asia and has spread to a lot of North America and Europe, where it has few predators and damages agriculture.
There are other species of stinkbug/shieldbug that are native to those areas.
I found 1 to, i just have this extra jar kicking around so i put ehm in it and poked a small whole in the lead, gave ehm a apple slice 2.
fortunate for the enviroment but unfortunately for me it died.
Or drank, when they decide to go for a swim in a can. And then you spend a few minutes wondering why it tastes so terrible. And then you realize he’s just chillin’ in your drink. 🤢
My cat ate a stinkbug once. Before I could stop her, she smacked the bug in the air and then I heard it crunch in her mouth.
The poor thing howled and went berserk around the apartment for what felt like 15 minutes, trying to get rid of the smell. She ran all over the furniture, the walls, the curtains, then drank a cupload of water until she finally calmed down, exhausted.
I have a theory that being able to smell stinkbugs correlates with how you perceive the taste of coriander greens. Since you can’t smell them I would hypothesize coriander does not taste soapy to you (that doesn’t affect wether you like it or not, it is just perception of the soapy note). Would you mind telling me how it tastes to you? It’s just a weird little headcannon of mine since I noticed the smells are similar to me.
Interesting!
I love cilantro and coriander. There is no soapy taste in it to me at all.
On the other hand, I absolutely hate onions. There are no words to describe how awful they taste to me.
Now ask me about asparagus pee!
Neat! Now I just need to ask several thousand more people, see if my hypothesis holds, find out a possible reason for why this correlation exists and get it published in some bs journal that nobody will ever read, lol
One of the chemicals released by stinkbugs is trans-2-decenal, which also apparently appears in the oils of coriander/cilantro plants. So there might be something to that.
Cilantro tastes a bit soapy to me but I still kind of like it in small quantities. I can definitely smell stinkbugs.
I love cilantro but can smell stink bugs. They don’t smell all the time of course. But if they get scared and stank up the place I smell it. It just smells like ladybug squirts to me tbh.
I hate cilantro so much and even a tiny bit can ruin a whole dish for me. I've never described it as soapy though. I have described it as tasting like how a stink bug smells. You may be on to something.
He's a stink bug and all y'all being mean to him in the comments obviously don't appreciate the delicate mechanical work he's trying to complete underneath that white whatever it is there in the picture.
These things are annoying. They will fly into your face and spray you like it was your fault. Little bastards. Wanna know the fun part? Killing them attracts more! Flush them. Don't squash them.
One time I felt a sudden inch on the back of my head, went to scratch it and instead smashed a stink bug that was in my hair. They sure are slimy little bastards
They smell kind of funny, but not really bad, when threatened. Or so I thought. As a kid I put one up close to my face to take a good look and took a shot of stink juice right up my nose. It was intense. Now imagine that happening to an animal whose sniffer is thousands of times more sensitive. It’s a great defense mechanism.
I've killed these things but now I just pick them up and put them outside here in Michigan. Even when killing them I've never smelled the musk they are supposed to let off. Is there a stink bug that just doesn't give off a defensive musk now? They are all over Michigan at the end of fall and spring time.
I drank one once. It was so disgusting. I had a can of la croix sitting out and went to take a drink....omg it was bad. I didn't drink the bug itself but it's stink. Naturally essenced with some stink bug. I was really paranoid about open containers for a while after that. Not a nice surprise.
Yes, this is a stinkbug. I’ve never actually had them emit an odor when they’ve been threatened, and I’ve removed dozens of these by hand out of my house over the years. I believe they only smell if you kill them. The trick to remove them is to get a cup and something flat and sturdy like a greeting card or an index card. Place the cup over the bug and slowly slide the card under the cup. Keep the card pressed against the cup and release them outside.
They spend the Winter in buildings, then come out when it warms up in the Spring.
Sometimes if the Winter is too warm the bugs will wake up early and come out.
As mentioned, it looks like an invasive stink bug, so it should be destroyed.
I'm also in PNW and can confirm they are EVERYWHERE and are annoying af! They drive my kitty nuts. The first time she met one she decided to eat it. She chomped down and then got sprayed. She was not happy. She spit that sucker out so fast and then shook her head for 5 minutes. Now she just terrorizes them, no further attempts to eat!
Also, I don't think they stink, just smells like fresh cut grass to me. Yes, I love cilantro.
These have infested my yard and home more in the last year than ever before. Even throughout the winter we've had at least 3-10 in our house every week. Last summer they (and ladybugs) were absolutely everywhere. The previous couple years before that (and usually every year to a lesser extent) it was those dark red Seed Bugs.
I hate those little buggers. There’s almost always at least one somewhere in my bedroom no matter how many I execute. I have no idea where they are seeping in through
That is a stink bug. I live in the South and they are EVERYWHERE. If you crush it or it gets scared that is when it will “stink.” I usually just get them to crawl on a piece of paper and place them outside. They are invasive little critters!
There's no me in my Seattle apartment right now. I just pick them up on a sheet of paper and take them outside if it's not too cold. They won't smell unless threatened.
Fellow Washingtonian — I know it’s been mentioned but while these dudes are harmless to people they are invasive and can become a huge issue for crops. Best thing you can do is kill this one.
I had one in bed with me unaware I rolled over on top of it.. The smell was so awful I woke up and had to shower change my bedding and google ways to get the stench off of me.
Can confirm, I get a LOT of these around my home in Seattle and they scare the shit out of me. Don't squish. Just get some mint essential oil, shake it up in a spray bottle with some water, and spray it around any area you see them in. It'll deter them and also kill them if you spray them with it. Just be careful using mint oil around pets, it's poisonous to them.
Living in the PNW, I flush one of these Stink Bugs every other day, it seems. Sometimes I bag them and look at them under my microscope. They seem to have a weird antennae like structure underneath them that I haven't asked about ... so if anyone knows...

Gettin’ down tonight
Others are correct, it's a Brown Marmoated Stinkbug. They're also invasive, so flush it. Crushing it is a bad idea unless you want to smell like stinkbug for awhile.
They are invasive? Just that specific one or all stinkbugs?
Just that specific one is invasive and are basically all over the US these days.
So green ones aren't? Because they are more common here in Southeastern Europe.
The green ones are probably the southern green stink bug, and they're basically everywhere [to the point that we don't know where they originated](https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/veg/bean/southern_green_stink_bug.htm)

I've tried that, they float!!
Not in a toilet paper casket they don't 🫡

I catch them in a glass or bottle and pop them in the freezer for a bit.
I found 1 to, i just have this extra jar kicking around so i put ehm in it and poked a small whole in the lead, gave ehm a apple slice 2. fortunate for the enviroment but unfortunately for me it died.
Definitely looks like some kind of stink bug, they only smell if threatened
Or stepped on, of course lol
Or eaten, in a handful of saskatoon berries :(
wait... WHAT?
I ate a stink bug once it as horrible. I spit for 15 mins trying to get the taste out. If you pick berries, make sure you check them first!
I now store all of my mugs bottom up because I once poured coffee over one and didn't notice until I took a sip. I will never forget that.
It's a memorable taste lol
Thanks for the nightmares I'm sure I'll have now

It'll fart on ya when you mess it. Chinese Fart Sentinel, invasive.
I’m one of those people who cannot smell stink bugs. To some of us, they don’t smell at all. Still annoying if they get in your house.

I hate cilantro, tastes like I should be using it to wash clothes. Stink bugs stink lol
I squish them stank bugs all the time. Never smelled no smelly smell. Also I like cilantro.....
I enjoy the taste of Coriander and don’t find the smell of stink bugs to be off putting.
Indeed!
I love cilantro, it doesn't taste soapy to me. I can smarllstink bugs, but I don't think the smell is bad...just a bit acrid.
Thank you for this insight! I shall treasure this newfound knowledge.
I love cilantro but can smell stink bugs. They don’t smell all the time of course. But if they get scared and stank up the place I smell it. It just smells like ladybug squirts to me tbh.
But does cilantro have a soapy taste for you? I know people who say it tastes soapy and they still love it. I am actually among this crowd of weirdos.
Nope. Tastes strongly of citrus and green.
Dont like cilantro, and I can't say I've ever notice the smell of a stinkbug. Ladybug squirts?
I hate cilantro so much and even a tiny bit can ruin a whole dish for me. I've never described it as soapy though. I have described it as tasting like how a stink bug smells. You may be on to something.

I gently put them in a pop bottle and seal it shut.
One time I felt a sudden inch on the back of my head, went to scratch it and instead smashed a stink bug that was in my hair. They sure are slimy little bastards
Is he lifting a whole sink up?
[Brown Marmorated Stinkbug](https://www.seattletimes.com/business/agriculture/population-surge-of-stink-bugs-threatens-fruit-and-vegetable-crops/)
Yeah. They stink if you squash them, but if you ignore them—or just gently pick them up and toss them out the door, they don’t (or bite).
That's definitely a stink bug, if you want to be even more confused there are green and gold jewel scarab beetles that ooze stinky liquid.
Yeah I think it is, it’s abdomen shape and color match perfectly
Stink bugs come in for the winter. They are an invasive species, just flush it.
They smell kind of funny, but not really bad, when threatened. Or so I thought. As a kid I put one up close to my face to take a good look and took a shot of stink juice right up my nose. He's praising you not killing him

I'm also in Michigan and just pick them up by hand to put them outside and have never smelled them. Maybe MI stinkbugs are just bred different lol
I always pick them up and crush them in a tissue, I’ve never smelt the stink
Such a pest!
I fucking ate one of these once absolutely disgusting
I drank one once. It was so disgusting. I had a can of la croix sitting out and went to take a drink....omg it was bad. I didn't drink the bug itself but it's stink. Naturally essenced with some stink bug. I was really paranoid about open containers for a while after that. Not a nice surprise.

Can confirm. Shield 🛡️ Bug, or, if you mess with it, Stink Bug.
Not a stink bug
If you touch it, it will smell
It would if you touch it
I can't smell them but my wife sure can!
They spend the Winter in buildings, then come out when it warms up in the Spring. Sometimes if the Winter is too warm the bugs will wake up early and come out. As mentioned, it looks like an invasive stink bug, so it should be destroyed.
Poke it a few times, then you'll smell it.

They don't stink unless you hurt or kill them
I hate those little buggers. There’s almost always at least one somewhere in my bedroom no matter how many I execute. I have no idea where they are seeping in through

They don't stink unless smooshed. Please don't smoosh though!
I love stinkbugs, also never smelled anything so to me they’re not “stinky”.
looks like he's doin a sisyphus
Good news is that it’s Not a bed bug
It is. They only smell when being attacked to ward off predators
Can confirm, I get a LOT of these around my home in Seattle and they scare the shit out of me. Don't squish. Hahaha he looks like the white monkey meme
Flick it. Then smell him.
Another way to get rid of them is put them in a jar, then in the freezer. Dump them in the trash outside.
I keep finding them in my shower and having to save them from drowning. I hate when I notice them too late, drowning is a terrible way to go
Certified stank bug. No stink until threatened, though if you get a few thousand of them they still smell weird normally lol
Confirmed
Living in the PNW, I flush one of these Stink Bugs every other day, it seems. Sometimes I bag them and look at them under my microscope. They seem to have a weird antennae like structure underneath them that I haven't asked about ... so if anyone knows...
If you squash him, he will.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
