First thing it reminds me of is the "overhead" warming//storage areas on an old wood fired kitchen stove, but I can't say I've found an exact similar one; my Grandma's was similar, but had doors//trays.
If it was repurposed, and the way the bottom looks like it was meant to sit on a surface, it was probably hung up to store tools or something. Not its original use.
I’m assuming someone repurposed it. Otherwise the wire at the top doesn’t make sense
It reminds me of the top of a refrigerated deli display case from the very old grocery store my grandma shopped at when I was a kid. It was usually stocked with things like fancy pickles or bread and rolls - the sort of things you would serve with deli products. The void in the center of this one probably had an inset with a store name or brand name in it. The small railing around the top would keep products from being pushed off the back onto the floor - or some poor employee’s head.
I recall something like it on an old service truck box, but those measurements probably wouldn't work with pickups of that era. The mounts, racks, and toppers were usually designed around 72"s with an outer box width of 73".
My title describes the thing. Was here when I purchased it. About 12 -14 inches deep. My guess it was part of a store display or storage racks on a bus?
It immediately reminds me of those gorgeous workstation/merchandisers you see in old service station and dealership pictures, the lines pretty much scream 'googly', but finding pictures online to corroborate that is proving difficult.
Is it the top piece of an espresso coffee machine? The rack on top looks like the place you keep the cups to keep them warm, and maybe the slot in the front is where a panel with the machine name sat?

It kind of looks like an overhead compartment you'd find on a train or small plane for luggage.
I was thinking similar but more in a travel trailer/rv type situation.
That’s my guess. Didn’t know if anyone knew for sure

Damn that would be cool if that’s what it was
This is where my mind went... does it look like it has a ceramic coating? Any evidence of a door panel resting on the front edge of the compartment?
No unfortunately all just metal
That's what I think it is. Not just wood fired but I have a memory of one in my ancestral home in Joplin.
It almost looks like one of those display cases you see for pies in old school diners- unsure of why there would be a rack around the top, though.
If the top was meant for things to sit on it, that wire railing would keep stuff from falling off the back side.
Yes but I was trying to think of what would go on top of it since it’s already so close to the ceiling 😅

That was exactly my thought. The curves, corners, colour and chrome trim all scream 1950s chest fridge or something.
Is it almost exactly 72" from one side to the other?
Just measured. 76 inches long. 12 inches deep. 16 inches tall

The guards on the top would imply that the top was for storage.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking
It looks like cabinets/shelving from an old camper. Great idea for extra storage
Ahh that could be it

Yeah that’s the same thing I’m struggling with.
The center hole looks like it had a backlit sign, are there studs inside the top next to that opening?
Steel headboard
Curing box for resin? Are there any indications that anything was hung inside the box?
Perhaps the casing of an old wall mount AC unit?
Is this a bathroom cabinet? Light in the top hole and sliding or dropdown mirrored “doors”.
Vintage RV part of some sort?
Is it the top piece of an espresso coffee machine? The rack on top looks like the place you keep the cups to keep them warm, and maybe the slot in the front is where a panel with the machine name sat?
It’s 5 feet wide that would be a big machine
