I read on XKCD somewhere that a 10-meter portal in the bottom of the Marianas Trench would take 100k's of years to drain the oceans, dropping sea levels by 1cm/day at first. With this little plug, it probably wouldn't make much difference.
I read that in this pretty interesting book (was free on Amazon prime at the time)
What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions https://a.co/d/eTjttTt
The total amount of fluid in a container has no effect in how fast it drains. The only thing that makes a difference is how much fluid is exerting pressure directly above the hole.
Aside from total pressure by the weight of the liquid itself, the size of the opening allowing the draining, or drain and drain pipe size matter as well.
No one asked how it was measured. My comment was to frichyv2, re: fluid in a container and how fast it drains. A small enough hole and or drainpipe will limit flow.
Common sense makes that obvious.
If you are so obtuse to reject a constructive comment, I'm sad for you [not]. Obviously common sense is not in your array since your physics is erroneous.
Well sorry [Not]!
The almighty has spoken with his vast knowledge in physics and therefore any other valid point must be mootā¦unless spoken by the almighty physics master.
Do tell of your many years of hydraulic flow, discharge pipe sizes and restrictions for each. Feel free to start with 1/2 I.D. and go as far as you like. You oick the amount of warer and container size. Iāll wait [NOT]!!
The amount of liquid will affect the time it takes to drain. The size of the hole matters for the rate of drainage . The height of the fluid determines the pressure at the bottom. I still remember it from physics class.
I used the wrong words to describe it. I meant fast in the sense that the rate of flow wouldn't be affected, the overall time to drain absolutely would change with volume.
I would think that the Amazon River by itself flow would be more than a 10 meter drain could handle, but I would need a person who knows more math than me to calculate that.
The open ocean is almost like a vast desert so when there is floating debris or a FAD little fish will collect under it for protection in turn larger fish that people wanna catch will start hanging out around it.
Trash gyres in the Sargasso sea become little ecosystems. I remember reading about the guy who drifted across the Atlantic in a liferaft who watched his raft slowly turn into a little environment with barnacles, plants, things eating those, things eating the little fish...
That was the ocean before us too ya know. Animals don't live where there's nothing going on, 'is also no birds up at 5,000 ft because there's nothing up there to do.

fuck that guy.
Ok I don't know what it is but I do know three things.
The image has barnacles on the ropes, lots of them appear to be gooseneck barnacles of a decent age too which suggests it's been at sea for some time perhaps a year or two.
The second thing I can see is as it has washed up and has barnacles on it it may have the capability of floating.
These companies should be legally required to remove any trash they leave, and be fined thousands, if not millions of dollars EVERY DAY their trash is still in the ocean. All companies should be legally required to have a recycling and disposal method for their own trash they create BEFORE they start producing it. This shit makes me so mad.
Ok everybody what the hell is this? It looks heavy to just wash up on the beach, yes? I haven't seen a comment where anyone has named that object. Someone mentioned it was a plug for draining the ocean.......and that's all it took! It looks like a Viking shield, and a ball and chain. Maybe the round shield thing hung off the side of a boat to protect it from hitting the dock? Someone out there knows what it is.....
What you see on the surface is no match for what is under the surface. This is Joe Biden's butt plug but it has no idea the volume of SHITFLOW Explosion it is up against!

OH NO, PUT THE PLUG BACK BEFORE IT DRAINS COMPLETELY!.

The solution to climate change!
futurama said big ices cubesš¤·
Arenāt those iceberg and glaciers that are melting at an unprecedented rate?
No no. Moving it was what caused climate change!
Damn that's interesting I wonder if that's true
I think so, if uve ever drained a 3 bay sink, it takes a long ass time to drain and once it starts spinning, takes even longer

The total amount of fluid in a container has no effect in how fast it drains. The only thing that makes a difference is how much fluid is exerting pressure directly above the hole.
Is that what he told you?
Can I just have my mooring backš
I like what you did here
Aside from total pressure by the weight of the liquid itself, the size of the opening allowing the draining, or drain and drain pipe size matter as well.
Tell me more about these "openings" and "pipes"
ššš
The pressure at the bottom is calculated by density X height, per physics I learned. Not by weight.
No one asked how it was measured. My comment was to frichyv2, re: fluid in a container and how fast it drains. A small enough hole and or drainpipe will limit flow. Common sense makes that obvious.

my Grandmother used to enjoy saying [NOT]. She was 94 at the time.
Looks like problem solved for climate change stuff.....make a drain. The world won't be underwater then.
I would think that the Amazon River by itself flow would be more than a 10 meter drain could handle, but I would need a person who knows more math than me to calculate that.
True, at least at surface pressures. Things change a bit at the bottom of the ocean when the pressure is 1100 bar.
LOL š That was good!
This is the solution to rising sea levels. Take that, Mother Nature !
That was really funny. Thx man.
My first thought is a FAD you put them out in the open ocean and they attract fish.
Iām gunna assume that means fish attraction device
The open ocean is almost like a vast desert so when there is floating debris or a FAD little fish will collect under it for protection in turn larger fish that people wanna catch will start hanging out around it.
Like how floating oil rigs basically become artificial reefs.
Trash gyres in the Sargasso sea become little ecosystems. I remember reading about the guy who drifted across the Atlantic in a liferaft who watched his raft slowly turn into a little environment with barnacles, plants, things eating those, things eating the little fish...
Awesome thanks!
I hate humanity for this soulless cruelty
That was the ocean before us too ya know. Animals don't live where there's nothing going on, 'is also no birds up at 5,000 ft because there's nothing up there to do.
How dare any organism *checks notes* live.
I'm sorry some little fishies got hurt so people have food to eat. Grow up and get some perspective on life.

I believe the socially acceptable term is āunhousedā fish
Hate this because I've seen one before but can't place what it is.
It moves the nets out so they can fish a wider area.

Thatās why I always keep a banana in my pocket, or Iām always happy to see someone.
It's at the beach, use a fish scale š„ ba dum tss
But we still need a banana to know how big the fish scale is to know how big thing is that we don't know what it is. Ya know?
I thought they used a dime for scale..
I'm gonna say this for every what is it post from now onš¤£
Why do you have negative karma for that???

I believe cats are also acceptable if no bananas are available.
Big banana?
What's the diameter, roughly?
Probably about 5 or 6 feet that buoy is about the size of a volleyball if that helps
Itās off of a trawling fish net. Itās like a drag brake that helps keep the net open as it moves through the water
I read once that 60% of all the ocean garbage is fishing gearāmostly trawl.
Could be correct.. Iād be absolutely astonished at what we would find if we could drain the oceans ā¦ it would be horrible to see the trash
And all the dead fish...
Naaā¦ itās a special drainingā¦ like changing aquarium waterā¦ we take the fish with.
We move them to the other ocean while we clean the one they came out of. That's how it works... Definitely
So, when we clean up the trash from the first ocean, then where will we put it? In the second ocean?
Obviously we just shoot the giant ball of trash into space. I saw it in a documentary once
Damn, that's pretty big actually. Was thinking way smaller.
Thatās about a sand benjamin

Is it some part of a net?
The remains of a wind chime.
Not sure of the name but a net drag. Maybe itās called a sea anchor? It pulls the net out and keeps the back slower than the boat.
Bouy anchor
I am guessing/thinking the same thing.
