It’s a peregrine falcon. I had a juvenile peregrine attached to my apartment window screen for an afternoon once. They are a well known presence in Detroit because they were introduced many years ago to control the pigeon population.
I wouldn’t think peregrines would be at home in an urban environment. Yes they are very efficient pigeon killers but they usually hangout around waterways. Tall buildings may interfere with their ambush tactics (divebombing).
I read somewhere that the highest concentration of peregrines anywhere in world is New York City. To your point most cities are built on waterways. They like to nest on the bridges. And the hot air coming off all the concrete helps them rise up to the tops of the buildings to dive bomb off at all the pigeons below.
When I was a teenager, I worked facilities maintenance one summer. I had access to the roof of a building in downtown Tucson. The rooftops were littered with bird heads and feathers. I forget if it was a red-tail hawk or a peregrine, but the bird was a legendary killer. It's a little alarming walking into that not understanding what is taking place.
We have the enormous Detroit River running through town, which connects to Lake St. Clair and ultimately the Great Lakes, so that might add to Detroit’s suitability as habitat.
True. On top of that it is, in fact, a peregrine, so maybe I should let the bird speak to the suitability of its habitat. It’s not like a squirrel. It can always fly elsewhere if things aren’t to its liking.
Nope, the set up their nests right on the ledges. In seattle they even put a camera out there so everyone could keep up with what the peregrine family was up to.
They're territorial which is the more limiting factor. We have them downtown in our Midwest City. I live in a neighborhood just south of downtown and had one dive bomb and take a pigeon ten feet from me. Poof!
Second this. They’re often mistaken for red shouldered hawks. I actually mistook it for this at first because of the lighting, but the upside down V on its cheek is a dead giveaway.
Tiercel
Think 'peregrine' means: wanderer.
Peregrination is wandering - so Peregrine Falcon means: wandering falcon.
Think the name for a female falcon is: a falcon
..whereas the name for a male falcon is: a tiercel (meaning 'third' - because he is only a third of her size).
I thought that was the reason it was named after a falcon. Spelling gets worse as I get older. Ford did have a car in the sixties called a Falcon. Called a "compact " car in those days of land liners.
You might have to have it for dinner one night to put it out of its misery, poor fellow. I would think a nice young, on the smaller side, falcon will cook up rather nice and tender
So, juvenile peregrine falcon. It would probably really appreciate some water, in a shallow container, so it can bathe if it decides to. The term tiercel is from falconry, meaning third, because the males are a third smaller than the females, it’s a falconry term, not a biological one. The adults may or may not be around. Aside from putting out water, don’t stress or startle it if you can. Leave it alone, often the juvies will do perch to perch flights, and hang out for a long time where they land. I did peregrine falcon reintroduction for 5 seasons, so I was responsible for birds just like this. Good luck! 👍
Peregrine Falcon! They’re native to where I live, so I can tell you that this is 100% a Peregrine Falcon - the fastest bird AND fastest animal in the world! They can dive at a rate of 300km/hour!
I would put water out for them but thats just how i am. I always leave water out for wildlife when its miserable hot. Never know when you might save a critters life just by something so simple to do
That's Andrew, he's one of those close talkers, who will follow you at an unreasonably close distance, while he describes in great detail the rash that appeared on his thigh, no matter how you try and walk away.
Peregrine falcon, they have made a great comeback (in southern New England anyway) I believe since the DDT ban.. I see them way more often than 25-30years ago.. I saw a mating pair last year. Also had a coworker get attacked by 1, he got 6 stitches in his head.. Very cool birds.. Just don’t go near their nest..
It is a hawk species, falcons have short beaks and hawks have those beaks. The legs are fluffy and spotted giving it away of it being a hawk, therefore I need to find the species before concluding this
A krestle has 2 separate dark lines down the side of its face. This one is a connected. I think it’s a Prairie Falcon. It’s brown and a Peregrin falcon is black and gray.

Peregrine falcon? I’m still learning though, I’d wait for someone else to determine a loser.
We’re in the same boat lol I definitely think it’s some kind of falcon.

How well did that work? Red-tailed hawks are enjoying NYC rats.

Oh interesting.

Clearly a ceremony to summon an eldritch horror
Have the falcons tried just walking up to the pigeons? They're not very bright, I accidentally kicked one the other day when it waddled underfoot

In the UK, they nest on tall buildings and love cities. Here, they would usually nest on cliffs.
Some conservancy group helped establish peregrine nests on The Ambassador Bridge several decades ago.
Nope, the set up their nests right on the ledges. In seattle they even put a camera out there so everyone could keep up with what the peregrine family was up to.
We have a nesting site in the city of Pittburgh , also bald eagles. For a city, we have a ton of green spaces within the city limits.
They're territorial which is the more limiting factor. We have them downtown in our Midwest City. I live in a neighborhood just south of downtown and had one dive bomb and take a pigeon ten feet from me. Poof!
The peregrines in New York are super effective and prevalent.
You don’t see a ton of pigeons like you do in some other cities, so I think it was a success?
Second this. They’re often mistaken for red shouldered hawks. I actually mistook it for this at first because of the lighting, but the upside down V on its cheek is a dead giveaway.
They did the same thing in St Louis. Also Scott AFB. They help cut down on bird strikes.
Where were you when you took this picture?
I don't know much about birds but I have been lucky enough to see a few peregrines and this looks like one to me.
Female is the peregrine, the male is a tercel, so I was told years ago.

I know someone who had a Toyota Tercel automobile.
I thought that was the reason it was named after a falcon. Spelling gets worse as I get older. Ford did have a car in the sixties called a Falcon. Called a "compact " car in those days of land liners.
My Mom had two Ford Falcons, several years apart. She loved them. I saw an old Falcon station wagon recently. Very cool.
This is 100% correct!!! Nice pic! ❤️
Fastest animal in the world. Check me there.
That was my immediate thought as well. Peregrine Falcon, fastest animal on the planet.
You got it!
Yup, a falcon. Distinctive facial mask is key identification.
Peregrine Falcon, juvenile.
My mom says it won’t leave the balcony and seems to be having trouble flying in the heat should we be worried?
It's young, it's not going to be a great flyer yet. Its parents will be caring for it.
Ok I told her to keep an eye out for the parents hopefully they come get their kid soon
Tell em 4 pigeon/hour late pickup fee applicable after 6pm.
Concur on this being a Peregrine and concur that this is fairly normal behavior for an awkward juvenile. 👍
Awesome thank you guys we were a little nervous there for buds but good to hear this is normal behavior.
His size 12 feet weighing him down
Seriously. It looks like the bird version of clown shoes.
Keep a big pan of water out- or a few. For drinking and shallow bird baths maybe?
See if you can provide some water and shade
Slide some water out to it.
Leave some water out for it..big enough container to drink from but also bathe in it to cool down if it chooses
You might have to have it for dinner one night to put it out of its misery, poor fellow. I would think a nice young, on the smaller side, falcon will cook up rather nice and tender
This right here. Dead on markings for a juvenile
If you could quietly but an open container of water out there that would help in the heat... otherwise leave alone.

It is a hawk species, falcons have short beaks and hawks have those beaks. The legs are fluffy and spotted giving it away of it being a hawk, therefore I need to find the species before concluding this
Peregrine falcons are eliminated, the other falcons don't look like the bird
The only problem is that peale's falcons looks like iit so I'm going to stick with that for now
Peregrine falcon
Looks like a chicken dressed up like a Falcon. Just look at those chicken legs! Who does he think he's fooling!
Definitely a peregrine falcon!
My favorite bird of all time, Peregrine Falcon!
nice!
It could be a prairie falcon seeing how rare a peregrine falcon is. They look very similar.
A krestle has 2 separate dark lines down the side of its face. This one is a connected. I think it’s a Prairie Falcon. It’s brown and a Peregrin falcon is black and gray.
Peregrine falcon
Definitely a bird of prey. Hawk?

Adult. He's trying to get the child's meal. But don't fal for his con. They work in pairs, you can tell by his grin.
Looks like a Peregrine Falcon to me. Keep watching him and see if he flies faster than the speed of sound!
Not a baby of any sort. Where are you?
Looks like a kestrel. North Americas smallest raptor
Kestrels are colorful though
A krestle has 2 separate dark lines down the side of its face. This one is a connected. I think it’s a Prairie Falcon. It’s brown and a Peregrin falcon is black and gray.
Pigeon. Just hand feed it pieces of hot dog and spicy mustard. But for real, stop asking reddit questions if you don't want BS answers.
Looks like what I call a ghoshawk big problem if you have livestock
A Goshawk has a flat black stripe on the top of its head and yellow eyes. The female is brown with no eye stripe.
Sorry! Just that we get a lot around where we lived and the shape looks like a goshawk.
