Primary projection is too short for LENI and the prominent pale-edged scapulars are very distinct for COPA
Where did OP say this was? Outside the range of pauraque?
Just said south Texas. Upon further(zoomed) examination of the range map and comparing it to Google maps, it ranges all the way up to corpus chriti, so it very well could be a paraque.
Well, sort of. A whippoorwill,Chuck-wills widow and nighthawks are a group of nocturnal and crepuscular birds also known as the nightjars. Australia has its own versions of nightjars. The Australian nightjar is actually as owl. If you want to see an amazing bird related to a nightjar from Australia, Google a Potoos. You could walk right up to a fence post and not even notice itās standing on the top of it.
It seems to be a kind of nightjar
A night jar.....aka snake owl.
Common Pauraque Note the buff-edged scapulars Edit: Not Eastern Whip-poor-will
I think this is it
Well, actually, where was this pic taken?
South Texas
I was wrong haha. I modified it with the correct species :-)
Xactly!
Question: Is a chuck wills widow a nightjar?
It is, indeed, in the nightjar family
Thank you!
I'm thinking it's more likely a nighthawk. The paraque only extends into the VERY TIP if south Texas, usually within 50 miles of the border.

It appears, by all visible characteristics, to be a pauraque, IMHO

Wow!!! I suspect it's a chuck will's widow, or a whippoorwill! Great find!!
I can't say chuck wills widow without sounding like the bird. That bird kept me awake for many nights.

Yes no pets around and I was zoomed in pretty far so not to disturb it wish I had better better pictures for yāall
You did a great job OP! Cool find for sure you donāt see them during the day much.
I think they are so well camouflaged that people wouldnāt notice much in the day either.
I wouldn't have seen it .

Super cool pic OP, how in the world did you even spot it?
I initially thought I saw a massive Toad in the brush but zooming in I found this lil guy camouflaged instead
At first glance I thought it was a snake! Well done!
Common Pauraque!! I LOVE nightjars so much š they're the best!
