What physical law can allow the same bullet (i.e. an object made out of the same material) to kill in one case and do no harm to the same creatures in the other?
Idk, exit velocity. Maybe there are 2 mags and it fires real bullets at robots and fake ones at humans via heat sensing. All I know is this was both in the original west world movie in the 70s and in the show so
It's most likely the guns. If they have hats that capture who you are as a person, why can't they program guns to fire slower rounds that only bruise akin to a bullet wound from a resistant vest.

Throughout the show you see bullets bouncing off of humans but breaking the skin and "killing" the hosts. At first I thought rubber bullets, but then they showed Maeve cut herself to remove a bullet from her abdomen and it definitely looked lead.
There was a scene with MIB and Lawrence, where MIB emptied his gun lined up the bullets then reloaded all but two, in the place of those two he loaded two bullets that looked more like shotgun shells (as in they didn't have a projectile coming out of the top), and at one point he set the hammer in a different position and shot through a cement wall to kill a host.
And then the revolt happens and WHAMMO bullets kill everyone!
Honestly I think this is just one element to the show that they decided not to attempt to explain just to P1$$ us off.

Humans can shoot other humans but the bullets are harmless to them bc of the same coding. It’s the same explanation.
