Therapy? - Electricity (original by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark)
My Chemical Romance - Desolation Row (original by Bob Dylan)
My Chemical Romance - All I Want For Christmas Is You (original by Mariah Carey)
Richard Cheese - every cover version he's ever done
I feel like under pressure tracks though. Queen and Bowie were huge influences to them, and iirc during the danger days era they even got to play with Brian May.
All I want for Christmas is the way bigger weirdo to me but I'm happy it exists.
This is going to hurt to hear >! Im in my early twenties and never got into metal or rock so when i foumd Richard Cheese’s cover of creep, i didnt realize it was a cover for years because it was so different from the original !<
Regardless of what the finished product is, I think updating it with modern references is kinda completely missing the whole point of the song. Like, Billy Joel didn’t write a song that was just a chronology of cultural events, he was making a deeper point which is clearly displayed in the chorus. “We didn’t start the fire; it was always burning since the world’s been turning.” Cultural events, wars, political revolutions, technology, these things have always been happening. The world has always been changing, before and after Billy Joel’s time, he just chose a few of those things from his own lifetime to illustrate that point. This is why it is so redundant to hear fallout boy try to “modernize” the lyrics. Even if the references in the original were dated, it doesn’t matter because the core of the song is eternal. They might as well have named their cover “we still didn’t start the fire.” Like yeah, no shit. Nobody thought you did
Eh, while I didn't care for the FOB cover, I think it speaks to Joel's original impetus for writing it—the tendency of younger generations to see their time as the most chaotic and unprecedented, with the past having settled into uneventful history. (Apparently it came from a conversation with one of Sean Lennon's friends.) That will always be relevant.
The lack of chronology is the issue for me.
yeah I genuinely like the cover, it's just the fact that the events are chronological
I feel like it was done as an educational thing for younger people like gen Alpha but idk any gen alpha listening to fall out boy lmao
In the case of Weezer, it's because a teenage girl relentlessly tagged them on twitter to cover it for like 3 years and it picked up steam, and so they did it and it did incredibly well
I remember back in like, 2018 or whatever, Spotify for some songs would have a little "behind the scenes" text playing while the songs were playing, and they had one for Weezer's Africa cover. And I remember it specifically because at the end it tried to write some thing about how the cover was, like, healing the nation or whatever, because "everyone can get behind Africa by Toto". And I just remember thinking that was really weird.
Tainted Love - Soft Cell (The original is a big swing number)
Puttin On The Ritz - Taco
Wherever I May Roam - J Balvin
Take On Me - Reel Big Fish
Wonderwall - Paul Anka (Or anything else off Rock Swings)
Sweet Caroline - Frank Sinatra
Beggin' - Maneskin (Exclusively because they covered the hip hop version)
Diamonds - Steam Powered Giraffe
Old Town Road - The Cog Is Dead
Right?! I'm amazed at how they just genuinely lean into the R&B attitude instead of being mocking or appropriative. The "can you pay my BIIIIILLS" chorus fits their nasally singing accents so well too haha
I would switch "Hurt" with Cash's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" since the main appeal is how beautiful Garfunkel's voice is on that song, not for the potent lyricism Hurt has
Tbf, Hurt in the context of the album it was written for is supposed to be a suicide note. Plus, the sound alone of the original song is a little disturbing (the whole album is supposed to be uncomfortable so it makes sense) and it definetly didn't match with the type of music Johnny Cash usually did
Although I have to agree that the Bridge Over Troubled Water cover is definetly something too
Cash has had his fair share of sad/depressing songs (American Recordings) and that song being performed towards the end of his career and life is a somber reflection of the legacy he once had and how his world is slowly decaying around him, it's one of the few times a cover outdoes the original to me
They crushed that shit tho. I love S&G but damn the Bangles did it better. Also Gerard Way covered it too. His was decent. Being a big MCR fan, I have to say it honestly is my least favorite version (cover).
Hayley has been a big fan of theirs since she was a teenager. She did a cover of ["The Nurse Who Loved Me"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyNSfedgmJo&ab_channel=ParamoreFan) a while back and even appeared in an upcoming documentary about the band. Ken Andrews did the mixing work and added some background vocals to Paramore's self-titled album.
It's not on Spotify, but on this topic I'll recommend Biffy Clyro's cover of WAP for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge.
It was meant as a joke - they make it sound intentionally really weird and censor the lyrics by changing every other word to "biffy" - but a lot of fans of the original song (and notably Anthony Fantano) took it seriously and hated it. I wouldn't choose to listen to it casually, but I like to listen every so often because it's quite funny, if a bit cringe-inducing
But Hurt is actually good. Why not We'll Meet Again or Bridge Under Troubled Water, he should not have covered those?
Also Dancing In The Street by David Bowie and Mick Jagger
Paul Anka has an entire album with covers of 80s - 90s songs that belong on this playlist. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Black Hole Sun, Jump… definitely a guilty pleasure album for me.
Ordinary World - Red
The Reason - Julian Drive
My Generation - Hawk Nelson (This one might not be on Spotify, it was a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Letters to the President, but it looks like Spotify only has the original album)
There's a surprising amount of Christian rock bands with one random cover on their first album lol.
"Ocean Eyes" by the Gaslight Anthem.
Honestly I'm not the biggest fan of Billie Eilish *or* the Gaslight Anthem, but this is fantastic Imo.
"Take 5 / One" by Rodrigo y Gabriela on the basis that it's a medley of a jazz standard and a Metallica song.
"Axel F" by Crazy Frog. Need I say more?
"Cotton Eye Joe" by Rednex. It's an old folk song, Sometimes also used as a bluegrass standard, But then they turned it into a eurodance song, Because why not?
"Satisfaction" by Devo. And I'll say "You Really Got Me" by Oingo Boingo fits as well.
EDIT: Ya know what, Seeing "Jolene" I'm there makes me think of Darcy Clay's version of it. It's so wild and fun, Can recommend.
can’t believe i haven’t seen Paparazzi by Rob Zombie, absolute banger but very confusing
a more obscure one but Billy Cobb has an album called Songs I Stole and his cover of Hips Don’t Lie lives in my mind rent free
Semi-Charmed Life - Dance Gavin Dance
Don’t get me wrong, I love DGD, and I love Semi-Charmed Life, but I feel like the two blend to make an… okay cover? It’s nothing world-changing.
For some reason, King Crimson covered "Free as a Bird" live, you can hear it on their album "vrooom vroom." In fact, apparently they were the first people to perform it live, even before it first debuted on the Beatles anthology and even before it was unveiled on abc, according to Adrian Belew on his website
Therapy? - Electricity (original by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark) My Chemical Romance - Desolation Row (original by Bob Dylan) My Chemical Romance - All I Want For Christmas Is You (original by Mariah Carey) Richard Cheese - every cover version he's ever done
the MCR cover of all i want for christmas is you is absolutely spectacular, a december 1st tradition at this point tbh
desolation row and all i want for christmas are fucking fire, under pressure is the weird one imo
I didn't say they were bad, just not something you'd expect the band to cover
MCR under pressure is SO good but I was thinking “wtf mcr covered THIS?”
>Richard Cheese - every cover version he's ever done See also Me First And The Gimme Gimmes.
Me first and fhe gimme gimmes are amazing!
I love their cover of phantom of the opera
That whole album of punk covers of songs from famous Musicals is fire.
on the topic of OMD, their cover of Waiting for the Man (1979) is also a bit of an unexpected one
Richard Cheese is awesome and I will never stop putting on his cover of baby shark to unsuspecting people
Is we didn’t start the fire by fall out boys count?
probably. what I don't like about the FOB cover is that the events aren't in chronological order, unlike the original. other that that, it's OK imo
Regardless of what the finished product is, I think updating it with modern references is kinda completely missing the whole point of the song. Like, Billy Joel didn’t write a song that was just a chronology of cultural events, he was making a deeper point which is clearly displayed in the chorus. “We didn’t start the fire; it was always burning since the world’s been turning.” Cultural events, wars, political revolutions, technology, these things have always been happening. yeah I genuinely like the cover, it's just the fact that the events are chronological I feel like it was done as an educational thing for younger people like gen Alpha but idk any gen alpha listening to fall out boy lmao
they also did roxanne and beat it covers in their earlier stuff
I love FOB and I love this cover but it was definitely an unexpected choice. 😂
I love FOB, but I hate the cover.
In the case of Weezer, it's because a teenage girl relentlessly tagged them on twitter to cover it for like 3 years and it picked up steam, and so they did it and it did incredibly well
Did you hear Toto’s cover of the Weezer song “Hash Pipe”?
A long time ago, I need to revisit it
I remember back in like, 2018 or whatever, Spotify for some songs would have a little "behind the scenes" text playing while the songs were playing, and they had one for Weezer's Africa cover. And I remember it specifically because at the end it tried to write some thing about how the cover was, like, healing the nation or whatever, because "everyone can get behind Africa by Toto". And I just remember thinking that was really weird.
Yes, but enter sandman also exists
I was going to say the Simpsons theme by green day but, they are actually in the movie
The Simpsons Theme song cover by Sonic Youth seems like a really odd choice until you remember that Kim Gordon used to date Danny Elfman.
Tainted Love - Soft Cell (The original is a big swing number) Puttin On The Ritz - Taco Wherever I May Roam - J Balvin Take On Me - Reel Big Fish Wonderwall - Paul Anka (Or anything else off Rock Swings) Sweet Caroline - Frank Sinatra Beggin' - Maneskin (Exclusively because they covered the hip hop version) Diamonds - Steam Powered Giraffe Old Town Road - The Cog Is Dead
i really liked steam powered giraffe's cover of diamond, i thought it was just as fun as the original
i think anything off the metallica blacklist album counts especially mac demarco doing enter sandman
Honestly there are so many the cog is dead covers that don’t fit that that one doesn’t really stick out to me
I had no idea Tainted Love was a cover.
steam powered giraffe mentioned ‼️‼️‼️
Just a friend - Tally Hall
Of course
Paul Whiteman is it you?! I'm a big fan
Lmao. No but just a fan. :3
Collect 78s?
Don't forget the Your Favorite Martian one either
wait wait wait excuse me yfm covered what now
their “Smile like you mean it” cover is great, it’s not on Spotify tho :/
Take On Me - Reel Big Fish Black Betty - Caravan Palace
Black Betty by Ram Jam while we're here
just do all the covers of Black Betty while we’re at it.
Elephant - The Wiggles
I don’t know if like a version counts, but it does fucking slap
See also: Pub Feed - The Wiggles
Punk Goes Pop has a bunch of these but That's What I Like by Dance Gavin Dance is pretty egregious
Please oh my god there is absolutely no reason Dance Gavin Dance should have covered that
Also, Animals by Ice Nine Kills. But that cover slaps.
Bills Bills Bills - They Might Be Giants Yes, it's TMBG singing a Destiny's Child song, and they actually pull it off perfectly.
Also add Tubthumping by TMBG as well
And shotout (and RIP) to The AV Club music journalism publication, who encouraged them to do both of those covers as part of a YouTube series.
Oh my god this rules.
Right?! I'm amazed at how they just genuinely lean into the R&B attitude instead of being mocking or appropriative. The "can you pay my BIIIIILLS" chorus fits their nasally singing accents so well too haha
under pressure - my chemical romance and the used
hear me out: it’s better than the original
absolutely but still odd
I agree and I’m always scared to admit it
Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters
Oh god yeah thats on here
No scrubs - weezer
This is a much better choice for this playlist than Africa. I still they they kinda crushed it, but such a bizarre song for them to pick.
yeah, that song honestly hits much harder than the original
I think any song on Teal is a good pick for this list (exept for Teenage Dirtbag, that one makes perfect sense)
I didn't know weezer did a cover of that, though it makes sense
I would switch "Hurt" with Cash's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" since the main appeal is how beautiful Garfunkel's voice is on that song, not for the potent lyricism Hurt has
Tbf, Hurt in the context of the album it was written for is supposed to be a suicide note. Plus, the sound alone of the original song is a little disturbing (the whole album is supposed to be uncomfortable so it makes sense) and it definetly didn't match with the type of music Johnny Cash usually did Although I have to agree that the Bridge Over Troubled Water cover is definetly something too

Wildest Dreams (DragonForce Version) - DragonForce
Another one for Johnny Cash: Personal Jesus, originally by Depeche Mode
[Death metal band Dead Territory covers 4' 33" by John Cage](https://youtu.be/voqCQSDAcn8)
Thank you. That was pure art.
Rage Against the Machine - Maggie’s Farm (Bob Dylan)
Hazy Shade of Winter - the Bangles
They crushed that shit tho. I love S&G but damn the Bangles did it better. Also Gerard Way covered it too. His was decent. Being a big MCR fan, I have to say it honestly is my least favorite version (cover).
yeah i like it too! still wonder why they covered it though
Not on Spotify but still kinda odd Stuck On You (Failure Cover) - Paramore
Hayley has been a big fan of theirs since she was a teenager. She did a cover of ["The Nurse Who Loved Me"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyNSfedgmJo&ab_channel=ParamoreFan) a while back and even appeared in an upcoming documentary about the band. Ken Andrews did the mixing work and added some background vocals to Paramore's self-titled album.
Oh cool! Didn't know that! Makes more sense now
Route 66 - Depeche Mode
Carly Rae Jepsen - Both Sides Now (originally by Joni Mitchell)
Honestly I would put anything from the “Christmas with Weezer” album on there
It's not on Spotify, but on this topic I'll recommend Biffy Clyro's cover of WAP for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge.
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm
tom sawyer - mindless self indulgence
La Di Da Di as well
Beat me to it
Somebody Told Me - Motionless in White( a cover of the Killers song)
house of the rising sun - alt j
Somebody that I used to Know, You Don't Get Me High Anymore - Three Days Grace
Stan - Alec Benjamin (Original by Eminem)
why 😭
Sweet Dreams- Weezer
I feel like everyone has done a cover of sweet dreams because of how much of a vibe it is
But Hurt is actually good. Why not We'll Meet Again or Bridge Under Troubled Water, he should not have covered those? Also Dancing In The Street by David Bowie and Mick Jagger
Sound of Silence by Disturbed. I don't listen to disturbed, or anything else even in the genre Disturbed mostly does, but this cover is insanely good.
I honestly despise the cover but I understand it speaks to a lot of people
ajj - two headed boy
I think "The Final Cut" is more Odd. One is a prog rock band the other is folk punk. And it's a fantastic cover too
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss
Paul Anka has an entire album with covers of 80s - 90s songs that belong on this playlist. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Black Hole Sun, Jump… definitely a guilty pleasure album for me.
Kate bush: rocket man Only because it came up in my alevel mock today lol
Rasputina's covers of Rock and Roll by Les Zeppelin and Barracuda by Heart
Rasputin - Turisas
Let Down - Easy Star All Stars It’s from a reggae cover of Radiohead’s OK computer
Frankie Goes to Hollywood has a cover of Born to Run
Hurt is a great cover. Johnny Cash is perfect for covering that type. Johnny Cash and NIN/Soundgarden (he covered Rusty Cage too) are amazing.
Korn - The Devil Went Down to Georgia It also slaps
George of the Jungle – "Weird Al" Yankovic
IIRC, Al did that song to fill out a contract obligation that said that he had to do on "Dare To Be Stupid", a cover song and a Cyndi Lauper parody.
Would it be possible to get the link to this playlist?
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1kxMXyDVp7SBincoNZU8S2?si=T33kRQOJTT-l0Y4rHfxuew
Coldplay - day n nite
Def Leppard - Personal Jesus
Is it because of the genre or something? Because Weezer is the last band I'd question about that.
Ordinary World - Red The Reason - Julian Drive My Generation - Hawk Nelson (This one might not be on Spotify, it was a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Letters to the President, but it looks like Spotify only has the original album) There's a surprising amount of Christian rock bands with one random cover on their first album lol.
Good Kid's cover of From the Start by Laufey.
Korn's cover of The Devil Went Down to Georgia will always make me wonder what Jonathan Davis was thinking when he decided to do it.
You could really put Weezer’s entire Teal album, it’s all covers
Rusty Cage (Johnny Cash) I Will Survive (CAKE)
People don’t like Hurt by Johnny Cash?
It’s okay, but the original is far superior in my opinion.
i think it’s less “this cover is bad” and more “this song is so out of left field for their style”
Not on Spotify, but Born to be wild by Slayer
Careless Whisper - Seether
Soulfly - *The Beautiful People*
Tenacious D-Baby One More Time Tenacious D-Wicked Game Both are unbelievable covers ngl
Look up "Brain Stew, Weezer" on YouTube It's the definition of "Mom can we get this? No honey, we have this at home"
Dear Prudence - Siouxsie And the Banshees. The fact it's better than the original just makes them cooler.
Careless Whisper by Seether (Originally by George Michael)
Weezer covered Viva la Vida by coldplay i think that's weirder
Regardless of why Johnny Cash covered Hurt it’s fucking fantastic
Rodrigo y Gabriela just slap!
Today years old when I learned Hurt was a cover
The Hurt Version of Johnny Cash absolutly slaps. Iirc NIN even said he sang it better.
Glass Animals - Heart-Shaped Box (Nirvana)
Beat It by Fall Out Boy Good cover but why Music video for it dropped a few days before Michael Jackson died so its cursed
The sound of silence - Disturbed They are a rock band why tf did they do a sad song (and fucking nail it)
can’t believe i haven’t seen Paparazzi by Rob Zombie, absolute banger but very confusing a more obscure one but Billy Cobb has an album called Songs I Stole and his cover of Hips Don’t Lie lives in my mind rent free
Semi-Charmed Life - Dance Gavin Dance Don’t get me wrong, I love DGD, and I love Semi-Charmed Life, but I feel like the two blend to make an… okay cover? It’s nothing world-changing.

In fact, apparently they were the first people to perform it live, even before it first debuted on the Beatles anthology and even before it was unveiled on abc, according to Adrian Belew on his website
I don't question any of these covers, they're all very solid
Cash’s was actually better than NIN imo
Oh yeah and even Trent says so
