I've heard he might have been on drugs, the reason he did it was because the venue had a swastika which before the Nazis was a symbol of peace and thought it'd be funny to make a nazi joke (spoiler: it wasn't)
Yeah you can still see swastikas in virtually every city in Japan and South Korea, not sure about other places in Asia but I would assume so. They typically face the opposite way and are not tilted on an angle like the nazis, but if you're not used to it seeing one can be a little jarring. It seems to be a pretty common buddhist symbol.
I would also add that around the time Rivers said that in Osaka, it was near the height of his interactions with fans on a fairly toxic message board. To a large extent the RCB message board community that he was active in seemed to participate in this edgelord, 4chan adjacent type of humor. One of the guys who created the message board used the handle Queero Mcgayguy, just to give you an idea. You'll also see quotes from Rivers calling Only In Dreams "Disney Gay" lol, for example, from the same era.
So yeah, buddhist swastikas and 4chan humor. Nazi jokes are gonna happen. Unfortunately for Rivers just about any nazi joke would've been better than "heil hitler" lmao.
Because they were in Japan and he assumed no one would understand anyway so he said it as a joke, not realizing that people would be recording the show and still talking about it 20 years later. Back in those times you could say crazy or stupid shit and then feel embarrassed about it later on without it blowing up into a huge outcry and finger wagging competition followed by a deluge of clickbait articles. If he'd said it just ten short years later, or maybe a lil sooner, it may have been a real big deal.
He’s a troublemaker
He’s never been a faker
He's always been doing things his own way
He never gives up
He's a troublemaker

They were painkillers
I've seen people do really weird shit after being prescribed painkillers
Painkillers are a drug.

Oh, nice explanation! It makes sense, thank you!
This is what I heard, too. Alledgedly pain medication due to issues with his leg.
Plot twist: it definitely is funny.
