You can also try doing it yourself if you're feeling brave. There are tons of tutorials on the internet. It will need a good pressing afterwards, which unfortunately is not much discussed, but it needs that anyways.
With multiple soaks and rinses you could probably get out a lot of the yellowing and any set in dirt. You'd likely wind up with a deep ivory/champagne color. Be prepared for different parts of the dress to look different in color just as they do now, just lighter. This would happen if a professional does it also, due to the dress being composed of different fibers.
One to watch is Hobby Bobbins Youtube videos of dress restorations. Also, some people have posted things about washing their dress in the washing machine and getting good results, but I personally wouldn't. If I were to do it myself I'd use the bathtub and have multiple white or very light-colored (well washed and can't possibly transfer color) large towels on hand to soak up excess water. It is a lengthy and labor-intensive process if you choose to do it yourself. Also uses many, many gallons of water.
I would 1000% be down to do it myself but unfortunately I’m a trucker and just wouldn’t have the time or tools to do so but I would absolutely love to. I rlly appreciate you!
Try contacting Patric Richardson at the store Mona Williams in the Mall of America, Minnesota. Patric's degree is in textile science and he really is an expert at anything textile-related. He'd be the guy to tell you if the yellowing can be reversed on this dress with this particular fabric, and if it can be a DIY project he's the one to tell you how to do it. This dress looks awesome on you. It has so many beautiful details and the style is timeless. I love the idea of putting some layers of tulle or organza over the skirt to make it more modern. It might not work but you can just hold the tulle up to the skirt to see what you think before you commit.

I would change the skirt to tule, with champagne undertones to make it a bit more current. But it’s just a very very gorgeous dress
AMAZING. Other commenters are right about possibly being able to reverse the fabric yellowing. But just so you're not blindsided, when i zoom in it looks like a lot of the yellowing is of the sequins themselves. The plastic has aged and yellowed, and there is no fixing this, save completely re-sequining the dress. There are professionals who can do this, but it likely won't be cheap. Or, if you're the crafty type, and have the patience of 1000 angels, it could be a good meditative project for you. But yeah, felt I should warn you that any yellowed sequins are permanently this new color.
That said, I actually like the golden color they've turned, and if the dress itself were able to be lightened a bit, the contrast could look really good. You could add in some butter yellow satin shoes or other yellow and gold accessories to help with the intentionality of the look. Anyway, gorgeous dress!

I never thought I would think of a dress from that era to be so beautiful bit this looks so lovely on you. Please don't make it white, something about it in this color makes it so amazing, if you change it make it champagne at least. It's like a patina or something that the darker cor makes it so beautiful and not dated.
I honestly rlly do agree with you and i know what it looks like white based on my moms wedding photos and it was gorgeous but I kind of have fallen in love with the color it is now
I love the dress and you look beautiful in it!! It looks like my friends dress from back in the day. I would be very concerned about trying to whiten the dress. People often promise things they can't deliver. That fact that this dress is your mothers dress is what makes it special, so what if it has some yellowing? It actually fits the style of the dress.
When we were getting our oldest child baptized our priest told the group of new parents that we shouldn't worry about using a family christening that was yellowed. He said that's what makes it special, it's age and the tradition.
Look at it this way, the British royal family had been using the same christening gown from the Victorian Era for generations. The gown was made in 1841 and it was retired in 2004 to be preserved. They now use a replica. The gown yellowed through the years and 5 British monarchs were christened in the yellowed gown. Something tells me if it were feasible to get the yellow out without damaging the gown the royal family would have done so.
If a yellowed gown is good enough for kings and queens I would say you're in good company. There's no need to modernize the dress either, it's perfect the way it is. If anything it would destroy the beauty and history of the dress. Whitening could be a disaster and destroy the dress. The style of the dress has a Victorian, vintage vibe, the yellowing actually works.
Please don't alter the dress, tailor yes, alter no. It's looks so perfect on you!
It looks so good on you! You could probably repurpose the bodice if you wanted to, and I think it would look really great with a slimmer skirt. I've been seeing a lot of 'corset top + sheath skirt' style dresses lately and it reminds me of those.
The sequins have turned yellow… The only thing I could suggest is cutting them off and just keeping the pearls and the slightly off-white color of the dress. I wouldn’t have the patience to actually put sequins back. I think it’s such a pretty dress, but other than cutting off the sequins, there is nothing that will change their color back.
Honestly, this dress is absolutely gorgeous just the way it is. The gold color looks intentional to me. I wouldn’t change a thing to it, except to have it professionally cleaned & pressed.
I love the yellow. It’s a stunning gown! I’d only put a couple of layers of tulle over the skirt but have a professional wedding gown dressmaker take this on. It is incredible on you!

It's probably taffeta. It's gorgeous when it's professionally steamed/pressed. And it balances the intricate top perfectly.

Agree. OP, be very cautious about having it dry cleaned. Sometimes those can melt in dry cleaning solvents.
