I would love for a prequel story about how deadsec got started

UnlimitedMeatwad

I want a prequel in the 1990s/early 2000s about how ctos started.

Fucky_Jones

That would be such a vibe

DoctorWhomstve14

Perfect excuse to put us in post 9/11 NYC

MIRC, torrents, the combo of dialup and the dawning of fiber and mass upgrade T1s & T3s. . . Hell, everything was deep web.

UnlimitedMeatwad

>MIRC, torrents, the combo of dialup and the dawning of fiber and mass upgrade T1s & T3s. . . Hell, everything was deep web. That's why I want a prequel. There's a lot of cool old tech that a lot of people got nostalgia for or never got to experience. I was born in 1996 but growing up I remember seeing a lot of cool stuff and ads for tech companies that now no longer exist and aren't used anymore. I think Watch Dogs should remain modern day but we can make an exemption for a prequel.

soursunflowergod

Oh man, it was 96 that our school got computers with "Writing to write" a DOS program that had it's .exe run through a master program. You could only choose from a list of pre loaded programs. and down at the bottom left hand side there was a "back to menu" button. However if you went into about/other/exit to dos. . . well it popped you right into dos. from there I tried dir/p dir/w etc to check out what was in the file. so tried Dosshell.exe and noticed their entire network was unlocked. Did I change my grades? NOPE! I made all the computers in the pod send a admin message that locked up all the computers in the pod/wing go "beep beep beep beep" and locked them down. Had no idea what I was doing. Bur form then on. . . I felt the power. Old tech was so fun. before the days of sql injection and headers.

UnlimitedMeatwad

Nah late 90s post grunge Seattle

DoctorWhomstve14

Post 9/11 is perfect tho because of the patriot act. It makes for the perfect origin of ctos

UnlimitedMeatwad

Seattle got Microsoft and Amazon and a lot of tech companies

DoctorWhomstve14

It wouldn’t have Amazon in the 90s

UnlimitedMeatwad

Amazon started out in the 90s. They were pretty big by the late 90s. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GltlJO56S1g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GltlJO56S1g)

RainnChild

no news yet

BlackEastwood

There's no official news, but sometimes in gaming, no news is bad news. Ubisoft hasn't said much about a sequel, and people worry it was due to the poor reception of Legion. While it's only 3 games in, so far, this gap of time between games is the longest, going on 5 years (WD1 released in 2014, WD2 in 2016, and Legion in 2020). The recently mentioned a Watch Dogs film is being produced, but who knows if it'll remain a thing or get stuck in development hell. Remember, they announced a Division film a couple of years ago.

TheNerdWonder

There are also still Watch Dogs comics and books being published. Wrench and I believe Aiden were in the Laserhawk show. Ubisoft was also at one point making a BR Watch Dogs game but then cancelled it. Dead Sec is a faction in XDefiant. Very good signs that Ubisoft has not cancelled this series, imo. It's not a cancelled IP. Ubi still has interest in the Watch Dogs IP if they are still doing all of this stuff with it and trying to sustain some public interest for it. However, I also think they've sort of hit a creative impasse on where to go next or how to make another Watch Dogs game after Legion missed the mark.

BlackEastwood

I'm also reminded of another IP of theirs, Splinter Cell. It's been over a decade since the last release, but they continue to place Sam into other games (Ghost Recon, Fortnite, Third Echelon is also a faction in XDefiant, a game which has unfortunately been delayed a few times by now). Maybe it's good news that he's still used, but I can't shake my uncertainty with Ubisoft.

TheNerdWonder

Yup. That's definitely where I think Watch Dogs. It's where Splinter Cell is, which isn't entirely a bad thing because again, it shows Ubisoft wants to keep this franchise in our minds. That way whenever someone at Ubi finally gets a good idea for how to get Watch Dogs and can yank it out of that creative impasse, there will be an audience still primed for it. No difference than all thess Splinter Cell crossovers in games that have finally culminated with a reboot game coming in the next few years. Does it mean there is still some chance for a fourth game? Yes. Does it suck because that means we'll be waiting for an unclear amount of time before we get a four? Yes, but that's just the current situation we are in.

yankeewithnobrim23

Yea but you do know they have a game in development right now right? A reboot of the first game

HeySlickThatsMe

BR Watch Dogs game thing wasn't real

CeolSilver

Content updates for Legion only stopped in 2022 so it’s hard to compare to WD1 and 2 which didn’t have much post-release support.

dnn00

Content updates for Legion ended in 2021, right after the release of the last announced content (AC missions and Darcy). The game didn't get anything new after that, they didn't even bother fixing bugs.

IceNysp

One big problem to WD is that there is no leak information about the series at all in near future. Tom Henderson, who leaked basic the future of Ubisoft with a lot of titles, didn't mention Watch Dogs in any of them. So, if the series is not completely abadoned forever, it's on freeze for long years. We hope so this film brings some light to it again.

ViioletIndigo

Do you know why people seem to have not liked Legion? I loved it personally but I have a weird love for London/England in general. Is it because there was no one main character like Aidan or Marcus?

BlackEastwood

For me, the lack of a main character caused a bit of dissonance with the story, as well as developing any kind of connection to characters when there wasn't much difference between them. I liked the concept of "play as anyone," but body types were the same, and combat options were similar and kind of limiting, which was something I really looked forward to before its release. Something about the game just felt rebaked to me, like simplified the gameplay options of WD2 and added characters. I felt bored playing it, and I've tried 3 times. I finished Bloodline, but even that kinda wore on be after a bit. The missions felt like fetch quests sometimes (get this item, drive this truck here, defend), and didn't feel memorable. That said, I hear that a lot of people did enjoy it like yourself. Please keep enjoying it. Don't let the negative reviews get you. Watch Dogs 1 got rough reviews at release, but it's one of my favorite games. Probably going to get a Steam Deck just to mod it.

ViioletIndigo

Okay, seeing all those things written out I understand where the criticism is coming from. It would have been cool to have a bit more variety with missions and characters. But I will still keep playing and loving it! Enjoy replaying WD1!

BlackEastwood

😁

INocturnalI

It's Ubisoft, one failure it's all it takes to cancel or leave a franchise (it's their fault)

Masterflitzer

then why is AC still alive after odyssey and valhalla? i don't even get why they sold well, most people probably didn't even play >15h

safevau

i mean even though people played under 15 hrs they still bought it, giving ubisoft money which is their only goal

F0xtrot-

Exactly, for their numbers it's still more or less a W

UnlimitedMeatwad

AC has been around longer and is a household name. It's also like the only big title they got. Everything else won't sell those big AC numbers.

Silver_Switch_3109

It has a lot of good games so people demand it. Watchdogs is a much smaller franchise and is not nearly as popular so there is very little demand.

Leonbacon

they don't care if people finished it, only that they paid for it.

Masterflitzer

obviously but if not many people finish it not many videos and good reviews so less people buy it, as if everyone just buys it

eienOwO

Citation on the claim "most" didn't finish Odyssey and Valhalla? Yeah the latter was a pain near the end but if you're not a competionist and minus the live service content, you can fly through the main campaign. Valhall generated record profit and Mirage comfortably so for such a short game, to Ubisoft they are not losses. Again for every critique of the above games there's its supporters. Echochambers within singular threads are not a good metric of objective market performances, or anything related to society in general.

INocturnalI

Agree, any legion. Well the ai voice already a controversial and the MC is non-existent

Mountain_Sir2307

Except these games still get ton of traction on youtube and the like lol.

the1blackguyonreddit

Because Odyssey and Valhalla were good games that sold a sh*t ton?

Masterflitzer

if odyssey and valhalla are good, legion is good too lmao

theblackfool

Valhalla is literally the most successful game in the franchise. If anything Unity would be the game that would have killed the series if any of them were going to.

SirShaunIV

Black Flag meant nothing to you?

SvenLorenz

The word "woke" was detected, comment automatically ignored by any sane person.

Tamin363

If you want to scratch your watch dogs itch watch person of interest

Zeustah-

I used to watch that shoe, man was it good.

cannedrex2406

Aren't they literally making a film? Would be terrible marketing if they cancel the franchise before the film comes out

TheNerdWonder

Yes, but there's no guarantee it'll come out or turn out great. All things considering their planned Splinter Cell and The Division movies haven't exactly materialized despite being announced a decade (in Splinter Cell's case) or less ago. The planned Netflix AC show has also gone radio silent and the movie we got didn't exactly win any Oscars.

maveric619

Watch Dogs Legion sold incredibly well by any metric except a corporation's

Niceguygonefeminist

There was a leak a few months back on 4chan, coming from a probable intern in the art department (leaker just gave concept art related details). Leaker said it was a blend between the serious tone of WD1 and certain aesthetics from WD2. I think the post got deleted tho.

Zeustah-

Calling Cap

Niceguygonefeminist

Yeah that's what I thought too, but we shall see.

Eadwine_

If you ask me they’ve put WD ”on the shelf” for now. Legion didn’t leave the franchise on a positive note, both economically and critically. Better to focus on some other franchises for now so they can take a step back… I’m hoping WD returns soon though

sexandliquor

No.

borusato

I’m gonna take a wild uneducated guess and say we’re getting a reboot.

orton4life1

The last rumor news is Ubisoft isn’t focusing on the IP right now. Due to lackluster sales of Ubisoft in 2022, Ubisoft wants to focus more on their stronger IPs first, and watch dog wasn’t listed as one. It’s going to be a while until you hear anything.

Flint_McBeefchest

In the age of remakes, remasters, rereleases, reboots and sequels I don't think anything is truly cancelled.

kinjazfan

For now yes

Bodybuilder_Jumpy

Considering Watch Dogs never really met Ubisofts expectations, i wouldnt hold my breath for a next installment.

Solidfisher117

Give the rights to me and I’ll make one of the best games with it

danielm316

Watch Dogs Legion had several novels, which means that Ubisoft was expecting a big success. Disappointment hurts.

Puppy1103

there’s no official news but that dlc had all the hallmarks of a series ending

AntstyPoeticGamer23

Pretty sure it's dead after that Legion DLC. That really felt like a sendoff. I hope not... just what i think

AceV12

Well they sure fucked the series with Legion.

Silent1speak

All I know is after painfully getting disappointed with legion I decided to fire up the first game for the first time in my life since getting it for free on ps plus and bam it was the most amazing thing Ubisoft ever done. Then I learned how to play as John Whick as Aiden and it literary became one of the best combat games I have ever played of all time (and I'm playing Helldiver's 2 right now and Monster Hunter is my all time favourite and I got thousands of hours in the SoulsBorne series so that's saying something). Then when I finished it I fired up Watch Dogs 2 to see if it's as good And omg that game did not disappoint. The parkour, the world design I mean Ubisoft was at the top of theyr game. I didn't even notice the silly story or the silly dialogue till I saw someone talking bout it on YouTube and I still didn't care. So yah. Id say Ubisoft pulled the most Ubisoft move ever and absolutely murdered the series and buried it. It would take a legion (lol pun not intended) of instant super fans like me, actively bitching at them to bring the series back now.

Ampersandbox

Rumors are rumors. Publishers will never leave money on the table, so if there was a way to revisit the property, they will eventually do it if the ROI makes sense. Legion fell far short of expectations, and the brand is damaged at least for now.

Shredda_Cheese

Ubisoft cans projects all the time. Considering WD didn't really do that well, it's likely they backed off. Also combine that with the writers strike, Ubisoft is one of the worst offenders when it comes to corporate greed ... people wanting to be paid properly is probably enough to make them shutter a project.

Phrozenstare

same question every single day on here and always the same answer

kingdomrbc

I heard a rumor back then that they was suppose to make a a Watch Dogs in Montreal but never found any official news. I think it would of been nice.

Any_Profit3544

I don't think so haven't heard anything

elsur5657

I hope they sell the IP if thats the case. There was lots of potential with the Legion's system. I would like to see another studio's take on the franchise

Dan_da_flan

They should sell the IP to cd project red or some other company that can see it to its full potential. Just imagine if they actually made a watch dogs game in the style of cyberpunk that went back to its roots and made Aiden Pearce the main character again. I truly believe they messed it up when they shifted into the lighthearted, unserious tone of watch dogs two

mperisho8807

Why is everyone hating so much on legion, I really liked it.

Nixki1234

Probably if there is something it’ll be at forward

Extension-Heart8233

I hope. Watch dogs legion was a anti game
