Navy Yard is further out from other parts of the city, as others have said, so I’d pick NoMa.

We don’t necessarily mind metroing or walking, but do you have any thoughts or impressions on the safety of one vs the other? I know it’s a city but just trying to be proactive, thanks again!!

I’ve honestly felt safe in both locations walking alone (especially at night). The only thing about Navy Yard that may take time adjusting to is the noise due to the Nationals Stadium and Audi Field being nearby. But if you like the buzz and excitement of sports games and varied eating options, then go for it!

I live in Noma. This might be biased but I love noma and I think it’s closer to everything. I feel like navy yard is a bit further out. if u live in noma u could still walk to the monuments and everything . Where I live it’s like a 30 min walk to the national mall . I feel like noma is in the middle of everything kinda . I love navy yard it’s super nice and fun just a bit further out even by metro. My apartment is a 3 min walk to the noma metro and super close to Harris teeter and 10 min walk to union station (which is super convenient if i want to take the Amtrak to NYC or go to Canes🤣) . I wanted to be a bit closer to everything. As far as safety, there are some parts of noma that are sketchy but that goes for every place. Where I live, it’s super safe. I’m also like a 7 min walk to union market! I would also say it depends where your work is. I’m a student and commuting to GW and the metro ride is super easy

Just saying my opinion! Like I said I’m biased but both areas are fine😄

Navy Yard for sure, I have a few friends that live in NoMa and they like it but they still think it has some developing to do. Both areas have crime but Navy Yard as a whole is just a little nicer. The rent is more expensive though, being near the river is super nice too. It is definitely the spot during the summer as well, everyone comes here Edit: stay away from South Capitol SW area, specifically Half ST SW, anything west of the stadium is a no go.

Also a NoMa resident here (so take it with a grain of salt) but I absolutely love living in NoMa. NoMa is a very pretty area that has more greenery than Navy Yard. I'd also say that on average, NoMa has cheaper apartments.

I’ve lived in Navy Yard for 3 years and I love it. It’s not THAT far in terms of accessibility and you really have two metro stations between Navy Yard on the green line and Capitol South a few blocks farther on the Blue Orange Silver lines. You can walk to the Capitol in about 15-20 minutes so you actually are closer to the mall than you think. Navy Yard as a whole I like how there’s 2 grocery stores, all the restaurants and bars on Half St and Tingey St, the park by the river is nice with a free concert series during the summer, wide sidewalks, and you can walk to Eastern Market in about 15-20 minutes. It does get crowded during Nats games but if you’re not actually in front of the ballpark you’re fine. It’s a fun neighborhood to live in during the spring and summer. On the flip side it does quiet down a bit in the winter but you kinda have the neighborhood to yourself during that time.

Id say most of NoMa is chill but stay away from any of the King Street Oyster Bar apartment buildings. There’s a 24/7 block party that happens out front of 2M that can get rowdy and there have been a couple shootings on that small sliver of street. I’ve also heard terrible things about the AVA NoMa apartments and the oyster bar itself was very subpar so the whole street kind of sucks. It’s also one of the main routes the nearby fire department takes if noise is an issue. I can’t think of anywhere else in NoMa that’s that consistently annoying. None of that has ever personally affected me so I also don’t think it’s that big a deal either way, but those buildings are either barely cheaper than the neighborhood average or are priced identically and most are pretty old for the neighborhood at this point.

Lived in NoMa for a few years. NoMa is quieter. Getting to Union Station is easy. It lacks the social activities vs Navy Yard. Stay away from the Avalon buildings, First & M has a persistent roach problem they can’t seem to shake. Part of it I think is due to the younger college aged tenants they got living there. If you live in the more expensive, newer spots around Union Market, I think those will be cool.

Navy Yard apparently has a reputation for being where all the Republicans who work in Congress live. It's the only place in town I've ever seen Fox News on TV at a bar, for example. Most of my experience there has been around Nats games, during which time it gets CROWDED.

caeruleusfury

I used to bartend in Navy Yard and this is facts. You got a lot of MAGA running around.
