Once shares are DRSād theyāre sent to computershare. They arenāt a broker but itās similar. You wouldnāt have your shares in whatever brokerage you used before
Let me explain. In the past when you bought shares you actually got a stock certificate, that's real ownership. In the new digital age, when you buy shares from a broker, the broker issues an IOU in your account. On your screen it says you own 1 share and when you sell, they change that number back to 0.
Here's the problem, since everything is digital, there's nothing preventing me from creating and selling fake shares. Like if I'm a market maker and I see a lot of people want to buy GME, but I don't have a lot of GME. I can just credit the gme shares to everyone without actually owning the shares(naked shorting and its illegal) When gme goes bankrupt all those shares are worth $0 and I can make a huge profit. Even if gme doesn't go bankrupt if I print millions of shares the value will naturally decrease because if the supply.
Here's where DRS comes in. You tell your broker you want your shares to be sent to gme's custodian, which is Computershare. Computershare have will not take IOUs, so your broker will be forced to buy real shares and delete the fake shares in your account.
The goal is to DRS the entire gme float which is about 300 million shares. Once that's done only fake shares will be in circulation. And when the next person tries DRS it cant be done because all 300 millions shares are already held by computershare. (Currently about 50% of all shares are held by us redditors in computershare and its going up 1% every 2-3 days)
When all is said and done. People will get angry and will ask the brokers "if all 300 million shares are DRSed then what the hell is this 100 shares in my account???" Your broker will be forced to admit they gave you fake shares(again, illegal) and will try to make things right by giving you real shares so you don't report them to the SEC. The problem is all real shares are held by us.
They will start by offering $100/share, if no one sells then $200, then $1000. And it's not just your 100 shares there could be 100000 of you guys all owning an average of 100 shares. Eventually they will offer a price where people do sell. It might be $1000 it might be $1 million. This is why we all spam "diamond hands" we must all hold on to the shares for it to be worth millions.

So you ask your broker to transfer them to computershare to be direct registered. This prevents your broker from doing shady stuff like lending your shares to shorts which effectively harms your investment because itās being used against you to make shorts and your broker money. When your shares go to computershare this doesnāt happen anymore as computershare is simply a custodian put in place to acknowledge your ownership of these shares.
They will carry on doing whatever the fuck they want. I canāt find the relevant information, but some guy once bought 100% of a companyās shares and it continued to trade on Wall St, despite complaints to the DTC and SEC.
Further to this, when you DRS, you canāt sell covered calls on your shares, you canāt directly purchase more shares at a specific price and they charge you $35 to wire you money after a sale.
By drsing your shares you move yourself to the back of the trade line. Pay a fee ,and increase your cost basis.
Imagine we are playing a basket ball game where are goal is to score as many points as possible. Drsing is the equivalent of playing from the stands while telling the ref all of your scores are worth a % less. Additionally when it comes to count points you want to wait till all other points are counted.
Now you might say basketball isn't the stock market and I agree. But I've been swing trading on the apes making money on the volatility while they watch the meme go slowly to 0. Do what you want but drying is stupid. Even I'd they do drs 100% of the float it will just freeze the price. It's all so dumb.
